My story began at the halfway through my second year at Imperial when I discovered that I wanted to be aware of the business world and the different issues concerning it and I wanted a breadth of experience. The reason behind this is that when we make strategic decisions, we draw data from what we have already experi-enced. This larger our sphere of aware-ness is, the less biased our data will be and the better our decisions will be. For someone with dreams of starting a business, this was the crucial modus operandus.

Older college friends had disappeared into the worlds of “consulting” and in-frequently resurfaced with stories of diverse work, foreign travel and big salaries. These were the analysts. Their programs offered a great deal of vari-ety yet were structured. My interest was suddenly piqued. I had nothing to do but learn more. If you remember one thing, remember that consultants examine a company’s situation, diagnose the source of the problem, prescribe solutions and help companies implement changes us-ing a combination of analytical tools,

quantitative and qualitative informa-tion.Consultants alumni occupy the best business schools, the senior ranks in corporations and the hottest entre-preneurial ventures. This bond with a group of outstanding businesspeople and seal of recognition all come from the fact that they are top performers with excellent business training.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

Foreword by The PresidentHi, I am very pleased to present to you this first edition of Imperial College’s Consultancy Society (ICCS) Magazine, Acumen. We hope this magazine serves as a guide for those considering consulting as a career.

Acumen is the product of a collaborative effort, and there are many people that should be recognised for their part in it. These are of course, the executive committee of ICCS. More information can be found about each of them by accessing our website (consultancysociety.com/management). ICCS has improved fantastically over the last few years. We are one of the most representative student societies at Imperial with almost 400% increase in membership since 2008.

Management consultancy is the practice of helping organisations to improve their performance. In a testing economic climate, it is more important than ever for firms to outpace competition. Management consultancy firms vary in their spe-cialities and are largely dependent on the quality and knowledge of the consultants who work there.

An Introduction to Management Consulting & about our society

Specialisms in Management Consulting

Management consulting can often be divided into specific categories including:

• Strategy Consulting: strategy consulting would help clients to chart growth strategy, future roadmap, identify problems in an organisation, change the organisations structure, deal with acquisitions/removals, rationalising products or ser-vices. Strategy Consulting Firms include McKinsey & Company, Bain& Company and the Boston Consulting Group.

• Operational Consulting: This involves assisting in process improvement, cost reduction, review of the layout of a pro-duction department, production control, productivity and incentive schemes, address quality control problems.

• Technology Consulting : This is to do with development of technology architecture, technology infrasctructure, complex programming, defining information needs, the provision of software, systems analysis and design, computer feasibility studies, implementing computer applications, computer hardware evaluations. Technology Consulting Firms include Accenture and CapGemini.

All management consultancies have their own specialisms. Firms such as McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company and the Boston Consulting Group have traditionally based their strengths on strategy consulting and continue to be seen by many as the leaders in their field. Professional service firms including Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte and KPMG have a larger breadth of consulting services, often covering all areas mentioned above. There are firms who specialise in technology consulting such as CapGemini and Accenture, firms that specialise in outsourcing consulting (also Cap Gemini) and firms who specialise in human resources consulting, such as Towers Perrin and Mercer Human Resources Consulting. Competition for places in consultancy is fierce and rewarding so it’s definitely worth your while reading on to see how ICCS can help you achieve your goals.

What is ICCS?The Imperial College Consultancy Society (ICCS) is the major society for students interested in consultancy careers. ICCS is collaborating with many consulting firms. Our aim is to provide our members with everything they need to land their dream job. We host regular events with many top consultancy firms. These events are aimed at providing our members with infor-mation about job opportunities in consulting as well as offering a platform to network and learn about the distinguished cul-tures amongst consultancy firms. ICCS also provides educational resources on consulting and organises the Case Study Club, where our members can learn to do well in case study interviews. Furthermore, ICCS aims to host speeches for our members by distinguished figures from business, so that there is something interesting for everybody. It’s all free too!

Dear Sir/Madam,

Members of your firm suggested that I send my resume to you.

I am currently in my penultimate year at Imperial College, London reading Biochemical Physics with years in abroad industry. I became interested in management consulting after taking Organizational Behaviour elec-tives. These classes dealt with managing diversity, creating initiatives, and business culture. For these classes, I wrote a paper on the national technology policy of tiger economies, specifically the pros and cons of govern-mental quaternary sector subsidies.

I have completed and enjoyed several team projects, and feel that I work well in such environments. My cours-es and research experiences have provided me with strong analytical skills and much practice in problem-solving. In addition, I believe I have the written and verbal communications skills necessary to perform the job well. Although my grade average is not high, my grades have increased significantly this year. I am enthusiastic about consulting and would like to apply my skills to the field.

I have read Consultimus’ brochure and am excited about opportunities at your firm. I must admit I am shocked, but Consultimus’ approach to consulting seems very innovative. The enclosed resume provides details of my education and experience. I would appreciate the opportunity for an interview at your convenience. I can be reached at 0783998765. Thank you for consideration.

Sincerely,

Jake Barnsley

Notes and remarks:

1. Totally unnecessary and doesn’t get to the point quickly2. Doesn’t explain why he’s interested in consulting (only explains how)3. It is not clear why this is relevant to the job (pointless bragging)4. This endless list of traits is all too forgettable5. The fact that Consultimus has only just been mentioned suggests a templated style6. “shocked” is overly dramatic; focus on the target audience and keep things formal7. Number is already on the CV; looks amateurish

Consultimus1 Imperial Road LondonSW7 2AZ

Dear Sir/Madam,

I will graduate in July 2014 with a MSc in Biochemical Physics from Imperial College. I am interested in apply-ing for a position as an Analyst at Consultimus Consulting Inc.

My interest in management has grown out of the courses in organizational behaviour that I have taken over the past few years. I would like to gain exposure to critical strategic decisions made by companies in a broad range of industries. I am particularly interested in a position at Consultimus because of its fast growth and recognized strength in strategy consulting.

I can contribute to this position previous consulting experience and robust analytical skills. I have worked suc-cessfully with a team of classmates to produce a highly commended paper. Furthermore, I have used statistical and other quantitative analysis extensively in both my coursework and my work at the Imperial Consulting Group, where I assessed the profitability of expansion plans for a client in the communications industry. I have been asked to do more work for Imperial Consulting Group as a result. My grades have increased significantly and steadily since first year.

I would enjoy speaking with you further about the possibility of an Analyst position at Consultimus. I have enclosed a CV and will email within the next week to follow up on this letter. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Jake Barnsley

Notes and remarks:

1. The purpose of the letter is stated clearly at the beginning2. More concise; specifically explains why he’s interested in consulting3. The order should be “why consulting?”, “why particular firm?”, “why you?”4. Picks a few succinct selling points that he can back up5. Shows evidence of quantitative skills6. Hints at calibre of analytical work mentioned and a positive result7. Grades may not be exceptionally high but showing an increase shows tenacity8. Suggests next steps; following up is never a bad thing to do

A case study is used by companies to test how well you can identify and solve complex problems

under time pressure and is often part of the application process of many consultancies. It is action

and decision oriented. Usually, you take the position of a manager who is faced with a particular

problem. The interviewer will introduce the problem and provide you with the most basic informa-

tion. It is up to you to ask the right questions which will ultimately enable you to crack the case.

Case Study

Situation

Our client was:- An up-and-coming high tech, financial business- Possessing a viable business concept with aspirations of increased growth- Aiming to acquire the necessary venture capital to increase the size of the busi-ness

ChallengesThe challenges facing us were in:- Helping the client attain the necessary capital in a given time frame- Ensuring the client's business plan was both feasible and designed for growth potential

It would be up to you now to solve the case. This is what the consultancy did:

ActionsThe actions we took to address these challenges were:- Conducted a full review of the business to find any possible weaknesses- Assessed the needs of the business through an analysis of the management, technology, and financial areas of the organization- Identified the key areas holding the most promise for growth- Developed projections of potential growth- Assisted the organization in developing a detailed business plan and presenta-tion in order to obtain venture capital

ResultsOur actions resulted in:- The development of strategic alliances for the client- Serious negotiations with potential investors for venture capital- An effective business planning package that covered all of the necessary areas- A sound business that avoided major pitfalls and is now running smoothly

How are we involved?

ICCS organizes case study sessions which are intended to help you to understand the fundamentals of how to approach any case. We will organize weekly sessions with up to 30 students per session. Addi-tionally, we invite companies such as McKinsey and EY to hold case study events. For the first time, ICCS is running an advanced case study course which will be led by a former McKinsey Junior Engage-ment Manager. The exact dates for all sessions mentioned above will be published soon.

Our summer projectsIEE: Growth Strategy

Team: Wassif Shabbir (PM), Keane Ritikos, Zhing Nin Mak, Afraz Ahmed, Sheela Ratnam, Shrilekha Appicharla, Yingkun HouDuration: 11 Weeks

The Client

IEE is a recognized global leader in automotive occupant sensing technology for multiple passive safety applications, includ-ing seat belt reminders and smart airbag sensors. IEE’s sensing systems are aimed at the following markets: Transportation & Automotive, Public & Commercial Infrastructure, Consumer, and Medical & Healthcare. IEE is headquartered in Luxembourg but operates worldwide, with outstanding performance in innovation and an impressive record of growth to show for it. IEE employs 1,600 people worldwide and has annual revenues of €160m.

Project Objectives

IEE has recently been acquired by a set of international investment groups, opening up the opportunity for IEE to redefine themselves and expand the business. The team from ICG were asked to assess the current market position of IEE and suggest how it could continue growing in a 10-year time frame. This included exploring new markets for IEE to address.

Project Outcome

The ICG team formulated four hypotheses of what markets IEE should be present in a decade from now. This involved a thor-ough survey of the automotive sensors market, exposing gaps that IEE are suited to address, as well as attractive markets for diversification. Apart from exploring specific markets the team assessed the impact of larger industrial trends (such as the arrival of autonomous vehicles) and the opportunities and threats that it presented to IEE. The team also made a recommen-dation on the balance the business needs to strike between the focus on automotive and non-automotive markets. The work and recommendations were presented to senior management at the IEE headquarters in Luxembourg.

IEE: Market and Competitor Analysis

Team: Wassif Shabbir (EM), Zhing Nin Mak (PM), Keane Ritikos, Jiabei Bao, Ji-Hoon Myung, Joao Pedro Nunes, Kyle Hellemans, Omer Shafi KhanDuration: 3 Weeks

The Client

IEE is a recognized global leader in automotive occupant sensing technology for multiple passive safety applications, includ-ing seat belt reminders, smart airbag sensors and pedestrian protection. IEE’s sensing systems are aimed at the following markets: Transportation & Automotive, Public & Commercial Infrastructure, Consumer, and Medical & Healthcare. IEE is head-quartered in Luxembourg but operates worldwide, with outstanding performance in innovation and an impressive record of growth to show for it. IEE employs 1,600 people worldwide and had revenues of €160m in 2012.

Project Objectives

The project had two objectives. Firstly, IEE has recently developed a new product for which there are concerns whether the market is ready for it. The ICG team were asked to investigate the market conditions at the moment and how it might change in the near future. Secondly, the team was informed of a competitor that has been outperforming the expectation of its busi-ness model. The team was asked to make an in-depth analysis of the competitor to understand the key contributing factors.

Project Outcome

The ICG team pursued a thorough evidence-driven assessment of the market in question. The impact of market forces were investigated by looking at cost parity, consumer acceptance, regulations and technology maturity. Then the expected main competitors and the potential consumers were thoroughly assessed. Finally, expected penetration rates in various regions

were presented, informing both on the attractiveness of the market as well as forming the base for a market penetra-tion strategy.

For the second part, the ICG team made a full analysis of the competitor, includ-ing company structure, product line, tar-get markets, customers, financials, M&A history and selection criteria, and lastly a detailed SWOT analysis. All key contribut-ing factors were presented to IEE which they would then decide on whether to incorporate similar strategies into its cur-rent model.

BBOXX is a for-profit spin-off from a student-led charity at Im-perial College London called e.quinox. The focus of e.quinox is to design and construct solar kiosks in rural communities throughout Africa. Project Outcome

The ICG team identified 17 potential locations to investigate based on key metrics. Thereafter each candidate was assessed according to both financial (office costs, accommodation costs, travel costs, tax regimes favourable to high growth businesses, etc.) and non-financial (quality of life, access to transport, etc.) factors. The study produced an excel model that assessed each candidate quantifiably based on collected data and solid as-sumptions. This analysis allowed the team to narrow the candi-dates to 4 locations, which were investigated more thoroughly. Finally, the top-scoring location was recommended and the model was delivered to the client.

Closing remarks

The idea of having “Acumen” was first conceived by ICCS as part of our fresh approach to promote consulting as an industry to the student population of Imperial College London. Consulting as an industry has been gaining attention and considered increasingly as a potential career choice. Indeed, a career in the consulting in-dustry may sound tough, but it is one that equips an individual with skill sets that can make a large difference in a variety of ap-plications across several, if not, all industries. This first issue of “Acu-men” hopes to usher in some information and valuable insights about the industry. We hope that through our exclusive interviews with the current ‘insiders’ within the industry, you would have gained a deeper understanding about the challenges and rewards of the consulting industry. We are also pleased to share with every-one the formation of our very own in-house consulting arm, the Imperial Consulting Group (ICG). Many exciting projects are lined up for ICG and we look forward to your participation in them.

Here at ICCS, we constantly strive to seek new ways to spread awareness and information about the consulting industry. Besides our first in-house magazine, we have a full suite of events and skills workshops to help members get a head-start into the industry. We invite you to check out our website for more details.

Great opportunities lie ahead, find yours here in consulting.
