• “As a result of this, great fear came over the whole Messianic community, and indeed over everyone who heard about it. Meanwhile, through the emissaries many signs and miracles continued to be done among the people. United in mind and purpose, the believers met in Shlomo's Colonnade; and no one else dared to join them. Nevertheless, the people continued to regard them highly; and throngs of believers were added to the Lord, both men and women. They went so far as to bring the sick into the streets and lay them on mattresses and stretchers, so that at least Kefa's shadow might fall on them as he passed by. Crowds also gathered from the towns around Yerushalayim, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits; and every one of them was healed.”

Great Fear:• What are the two words for fear in Hebrew?

• pahhad = djp It is the type of fear or terror where you want to run away

• yara = ary It is the type of fear that makes you want to run toward G-d

• Greek• phobos = Hebrew pahhad

• In Delitzsch Hebrew translation, the word used is yara• Interesting contrast:

• no one dare join them yet the number of Talmidim grew every day

Acts 5:17 to 21 (CJB*):

• “But the cohen hagadol and his associates, who were members of the party of the Tz'dukim, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the emissaries and put them in the public jail. But during the night, an angel of ADONAI opened the doors of the prison, led them out and said, "Go, stand in the Temple court and keep telling the people all about this new life!" After hearing that, they entered the Temple area about dawn and began to teach.”

Miracles, Signs and Wonders:• Acts Chapters 2 to 5

• Acts 2:43 (CJB*):• “Everyone was filled with awe, and many miracles and signs took place through the

emissaries.”

• Acts 4:33 (CJB*):• “With great power the emissaries continued testifying to the resurrection of the Lord

Yeshua, and they were all held in high regard”

• Acts 5:12 (CJB*):• “Meanwhile, through the emissaries many signs and miracles continued to be done among

the people.”

Two Viewpoints:1. There are no miracles today (or they are very rare) because the age of

miracles has ceased• 1st Corinthians 13:9-10 (CJB*):

• “For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.”

• They ceased well before the canonization of scripture in around 397 C.E.?

• Which Gift/s of the Ruach listed in 1st Corinthians is/are not demonstrated in the Tanak?




Manifestations of the Ruach:• 1st Corinthians 12:8-11 (CJB*):

• “To one, through the Spirit, is given a word of wisdom; to another, a word of knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit; to another, faith, by the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healing, by the one Spirit; to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the ability to judge between spirits; to another, the ability to speak in different kinds of tongues; and to yet another, the ability to interpret tongues. One and the same Spirit is at work in all these things, distributing to each person as he chooses.” The prophets of old, Moshe, Joshua, Elijah, Elisha, etc did many signs, wonders and miracle, and also worked in the manifestations of the Ruach.”

with G-d and His working of miracles

Where are the miracles today:• In the Shemoneh Esrei section of the Amida (said 3 times per day)

• We thank G-d for His miracles which are with us every day• Morning, evening and afternoon.

What is a miracle:• Dictionary definition:

• “an extraordinary and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore attributed to a divine agency.”

• “an unusual and mysterious event that is thought to have been caused by a god because it does not follow the usual laws of nature”

• Something that interrupts that which we perceive to be the “natural order” of things – Based on the Gospel accounts

• The “natural order”• “the cause and effect events which flow naturally, within the parameters of the predictable laws of

physics”



C.S. Lewis:• The supernatural interruption of a miracle is digested or assimilated by Nature

with perfect ease and Nature then harmonises it in a twinkling with all other events.

• The “event” becomes a very natural part of this order. Though it arrives outsides the physical laws of cause and effect, the laws of cause and effect immediately incorporate it.

• For example:• “Miraculous wine will intoxicate, miraculous conception will lead to pregnancy, inspired

books will suffer all the ordinary processes of textual corruption, miraculous bread will be digested.”

The Power of the Ruach:• Who does miracles? Who is the one that intervenes in the laws of nature?

• When do we see the most amount of miracles done in scripture?

• Through what power were these miracles done?

• Did He do any before He was immersed into the Yordan?

• Luke 4:14 (CJB*):

• “Yeshua returned to the Galil in the power of the Spirit”

• Luke 5:17 (CJB*):

• “One day when Yeshua was teaching, there were P'rushim and Torah-teachers present who had

come from various villages in the Galil and Y'hudah, also from Yerushalayim; and the power of ADONAI was with him (Yeshua) to heal the sick.”




The Purpose of the Ruach:• What was the purpose of receiving the Ruach?

• Acts 1:8 (CJB*):• “But you will receive power when the Ruach HaKodesh comes upon you; you will be my

witnesses both in Yerushalayim and in all Y'hudah and Shomron, indeed to the ends of the earth!"”

• Yochanan 14:26 and 15:26 (CJB*):• “But the Counselor, the Ruach HaKodesh, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you

everything; that is, he will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

• "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send you from the Father—the Spirit of Truth, who keeps going out from the Father — he will testify on my behalf. And you testify too, because you have been with me from the outset.”

The Purpose of the Ruach:• Romans 15:18-19 (CJB*):

• “for I will not dare speak of anything except what the Messiah has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience by my words and deeds, through the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Yerushalayim all the way to Illyricum I have fully proclaimed the Good News of the Messiah.”

The purpose of the Signs and Wonders:• Mark16:20 (CJB*):

• “And they went out and proclaimed everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the message by the accompanying signs.”




Warning about The Miraculous:• Matthew 7:8-9

• Not everyone who says “Lord Lord, didn’t we prophecy and do miracles in Your Name,” will enter the Kingdom of Heaven

• Deuteronomy 13• Matthew 24:24 (CJB*):

• “There will appear false Messiahs and false prophets performing signs and wonders for the purpose, if possible, of misleading the chosen.”

Miracles and the Shlichim:• FFOZ:

• ”we are not the Apostles. Miracles were functional for them and a testimony to the validity of their message, as the chosen, appointed, commissioned witnesses of Yeshua.”

• What were the qualifications for Apostleship (to be a Shlichim)?• 3 specific things from Acts 1:21-22



Miracles and the Shlichim:• Acts 1:21-22

• Immersed by Yochanan (well Rav Shaul appears to be an exception to this one, and possibly even the next three)

• Able to transmit His teachings in an authoritative manner (as a result of having been taught by Yeshua for the full term of His ministry)

• A Witnesses of Yeshua’s resurrection

• To be commissioned or sent by Yeshua? based on Acts 1:8

• “Now you together constitute the body of the Messiah, and individually you are parts of it. And G-d has placed in the Messianic Community first, emissaries (sent ones, Apostles); second, prophets; third, teachers; then those who work miracles; then those with gifts of healing; those with ability to help; those skilled in administration; and those who speak in various tongues.

• Not all are emissaries, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? or teachers? or miracle-workers?

• Not all have gifts of healing, not all speak in tongues, not all interpret, do they?• Eagerly seek the better gifts. But now I will show you the best way of all.”




Miracles and the Shlichim:• Hebrews 2:3-4 (CJB*):

• “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him (i.e. the Apostles); God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?”

• “The purpose of the miracles was to add G-d’s testimony, regarding Yeshua, to that of the Apostles.”

• 2nd Corinthians 12:12 (CJB*):• “The things that prove I am an emissary — signs, wonders and miracles — were done

in your presence, despite what I had to endure.”
