The purpose of this calculation is to predict the roomtemperature profile expected when a small steam leak isintroduced in any one of the Unit 1 RWCU Rooms (Room g I-501,I-502,I-503,I-504 & I-505). The results of this calculationwill be used as a basis for development of Steam Leak DetectionSystem setpoints.Revision 1 of this calculation models the affects of a steam leakin the same Unit 1 RWCU rooms with individual exhaust registers. The original analysis utilized a common exhaust register locatedwithin the Penetration room.

Plant is operating under normal conditions prior tointroducing a steam leak. All adjacent rooms will be maintained at their designmaximum temperature for summer conditions and at theaverage temperature for the month of January (if blue-box data is available) for winter conditions. Where wintertemperature data is not available, the design minimumtemperature of 60 F will be used. The rooms under consideration will not be allowed topressurize, as the blowout panel will relieve atapproximately 0.5 psid. Therefore, a leakage path out ofthe rooms will be used to maintain pressure as close to 14.7psia as possible. The temperature effects due to slightroom pressurization are assumed to be negligeble. The effects of adjacent room heatup are not considered inthis analysis (i.e. adjacent room temperatures are heldconstant). This results in a conservative temperatureprofile for the room under consideration. The actualadjacent room heatup due to the steam leak is expected tobe minimal (when considering conductive heat losses). The COTTAP model assumes perfect mixing of the air and steamin the room under consideration. Refer to APPENDIX B.for aspecial consideration related to the perfect mixing assumption.

For the purpose of this calculation, leaks of subcooled liquidat 235 F and 1204F are neglected. The energy content of suchleaks is considered negligable and probably cannot be detectedby the current GE temperature-based leak detection system.Subcooled liquid at 120 F will not even flash to steam withinthe RWCU Rooms (at 14.7 psia). Subcooled liquid at 235 F only-flashes 34 to steam when allowed to expand adiabatically to14.7 psia.
-
Calc I M-SLD-005Page 6 of 63
The only break conditions analyzed by this calculation are:a) subcooled liquid at 1025 psig/535 F, andb) subcooled liquid at 1190 psig/440 F
Section 4.7 discusses the pipe break data used in the COTTAPmodel. For breaks of saturated or subcooled liquid(initially), a percentage of the break mass flow flashesto steam at 14.7 psia. The remaining break mass flow entersthe room as saturated liquid at 2124F. For conservatism, thiscalculation neglects any heat load associated with thesaturated liquid entering the room. This is consideredreasonable, since open floor drains exist in each of the roomsunder consideration. This temperature profile, althoughconservative, only underpredicts actual expected temperatureresponse by 3 to 5 F (engineering judgement).Section 4.7 calculates the break mass flow based upon actualconditions in the pipe. Then, the amount of flashing isdetermined by allowing these conditions to expand adiabaticallyto the room pressure of 14.7 psia. This percentage is appliedto the break mass flow to determine the amount of pure steamwhich enters the room for the conditions being analyzed.
4.0 METHODOLOGY
The Compartment Transient Temperature Analysis Program (COTTAP)was used to analyze the affects of a steam leak in variousrooms within the plant. Since the RWCU rooms contain process linesof varying energy conditions, the analysis was performed for twodifferent sets of break conditions. The first case analyzed abreak for normal conditions experienced at the inlet to the RWCUsystem (1025 psig/535 F). The second case considered the lowestpossible energy condition which was believed to be detectable bythe existing GE temperature-based steam leak detection system (1190psig/440 F). All other process lines are of lower energyconditions and were assumed not to be detectable. The programpredicted temperature profiles for the room under considerationwith the following set of conditions1) 5 gpm subcooled water leak (Summer)2) 5 gpm subcooled water leak (Winter)3) 25 gpm subcooled water leak (Summer)4) 25 gpm subcooled water leak (Winter)The individual room models were developed from various sourcesof information, as identified in Section 2.0 References. TheRWCU rooms have been modeled as three inter-connected volumeswhich communicate with each other. The effects of each leakare considered on all three rooms. Therefore, the results willconsist of 24 separate COTTAP outputs and the associatedtemperature profiles for the cond'.tions stated above. Thefollowing discussion is provided to outline the steps used indeveloping the individual room models.

Rooms
Room Volumes
InitialPressure
The room volume was taken from Reference 2.1for the room under consideration. Adjacentroom volumes were set to a large value (i.e.1.0 EE15 cu. ft.) to maintain constantproperties such as temperature, pressure andrelative humidity.
All rooms were assumed to be at an initialpressure of 14.7 psia.
InitialTemperature All rooms were assumed to be at their maximum
normal design temperature initially for summerconditions. Actual winter data was used, whereavailable, as a starting point for the winterruns. The winter data was taken as the "blue-box" average temperature for January 1988.The January data was considered to be moreconservative than February data. Where actualwinter data was not available, the designminimum room temperature of 60 F was used.Where winter data was not available for theroom in question, the room was started at atemperature which allows it to reach a steady-state with its adjacent rooms. The outside ambient temperature was taken as79 F (summer) and 26 F (winter). The summerambient was taken from Reference 2.8 as the 24hour daily average temperature, based upon the14 ASHRAE design value for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. The winter value was taken asthe actual monthly average for January over theyears 1986 thru 1989. This average was basedupon SSES Meteorological Data taken from theplant computer. A comparison of February dataover this same time period indicated that theJanuary data was more conservative.
RelativeHumidity The relative humidity for all rooms connected
by ventilation or leakage paths is based uponoutside air temperatures of 92 F DB / 78 F WB(summer) and -5 F DB / -5 F WB (winter). Airat these conditions was then allowed to heatup or cool down (sensible heating/cooling only)to the initial room temperature, and thecorresponding RH value calculated or read fromthe psychrometric chart.

Room Height
Calc g M-SLD-005Page 8 of 63
This value is no longer used by COTTAP. It'original purpose was associated with the wallcondensation calculation used within COTTAP.COTTAP has been revised and no longer uses thisinformation. Therefore, a value of 10.0 ft wasinputted for each room. This value has nosignificance to the calculation. Note that theactual room height was used in the calculationof room volume.
4.2 Airflow and Leakage Path DataAirflow Data The design airflow is provided for the room
under consideration. All flow paths areidentified (i.e. supply, exhaust and transferair). The source of the airflow data is thePAID associated with the particular ventilationsystem for that room. The data identifies theroom from which the air comes, and the room towhich the air goes.A conservative value of 110< design airflow isinputted to the model, since airflows arebalanced to + 10%. Refer to the data inputsection for the actual values used in thismodel.
The supply, exhaust and transfer air lines tothe RWCU Rooms are equipped with back draftisolation dampers to prevent the spread ofsteam to adjacent rooms in the event of a highenergy line break outside containment. Thesedampers isolate at a differential pressure of5 " WG. The BDID's are not expected to close dueto a steam leak of this magnitude. Therefore, the model assumes the air flow path remainsopen throughout this event.Revision 1 of this calculation models separateexhaust registers for each of the rooms underconsideration. The original analysis utilizeda common exhaust register located within theRWCU Penetration room. The exhaust from eachroom was modeled as transfer air supplied to thePenetration room, where it mixed perfectly priorto exiting the area. Refer to Appendix A for thespecific airflow data changes.
LeakagePath Data As with the airflow data, all rooms connected
to the leakage path are identified. Theleakage path area is only used to scale theleakage flowrates for the entire compartmentunder consideration. The intent of the leakage
-
t f

Calc 4 M-SLD-005Page 9 of 63
path is to prevent compartment pressurization. The open doorways between the RWCU rooms aremodelled as leakage paths, since these are largeareas.
4.3 Heat Load Data
Heat LoadType The type of heat load was identified using the
following nomenclature
Type Description
LightingElectrical PanelsMotorsUnit CoolersPipingMisc. Mechanical Equipment
Heat InputRate The heat rate input in Btu/hr for the
associated heat load.
The values for heat load types 1 thru 3 wereobtained from References 2.2 & 2.3. The heatrate inputs for type 4 heat loads are inputtedas negative values since the unit coolersremove heat from the room. The heat input ratefor type 5 heat loads were input as -1. Thisvalue directs COTTAP to obtain piping informationnecessary to calculate the piping heat loads. The heat input rate for type 8 heat loads wasobtained from References 2.2 & 2.3, as necessaryfor the appropriate room.To achieve an initial steady-state condition, amiscellaneous heat load (positive or negative)was added to the main room to balance all othertime zero heat loads. This heat load wasinputted as type 8.
Note that COTTAP neglects cold pipe andequipment as heat sinks. This represents non-conservatism in this calculation. A sample runmade to determine the effects of these heatsinks indicated that resultant temperatureswere only slightly lower than the valuespredicted when neglecting these heat sinks. Therefore, this calculation assumes the effectsof these heat sinks are negligable.

4.4 Piping Input Data
Only piping with a design temperature greater than that of thenormal room design temperature was included, since COTTAPignores cold pipe as a heat sink. This generally meant thatpiping at or close to Reactor conditions was included. RESULTS/CONCLUS IONS
The following pages provide the temperature profiles resultingfrom the RWCU Room models for the conditions stated below1) 5 gpm subcooled water leak (Summer)2) 5 gpm subcooled water leak (Winter)3) 25 gpm subcooled water leak (Summer)4) 25 gpm subcooled water leak (Winter)The COTTAP output for each case above can be found asAttachments 1A thru 6D, respectively. Each output providesa summary of the data input, and the results of each time stepwithin the 24 hour run time. At the end of each COTTAP output,a summary table of Temp vs Time information is also provided.APPENDIX B provides an Addendum to Calc g M-SLD-005, Rev. 0The addendum reanalyzes a steam leak in each room utilizingseparate ventilation exhausts. The original analysis modelledthe ventilation system with a common exhaust register in the RWCUPenetration room. Although the actual installed system utilizesa common exhaust, the model assumes all the transfer air fromthe Pump/Heat Exchamger rooms mixes perfectly with the Penetrationroom air. The location of the exhaust register suggests that thismixing would only occur in a very localized part of the room. Theprevious results tended to dilute the affects of a steam leakwithin the Penetration room. The Penetration room was also verysensitive to steam leaks in the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms. The results of Revision 1 indicate that the temperature profileis significantly higher than the original analysis for the RWCUPenetration room. The RWCU Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms did notexperience any significant changes as a result of modellingindividual exhaust registers. These results were expected, sincethe Penetration room response was diluted by the transfer air fromthe Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms.
Refer to APPENDIX B for the results of the new analysis. Theoutput is provided in a similar manner to that of the originalanalysis, as stated above.

ADDENDUM TO CALC 5 M-SLD-005, REV. 0
The addendum to the original analysis utilizes the same datainputs with the following exception. The airflow data input hasbeen changed to provide separate room exhausts in each of thethree rooms under consideration. For the original analysis, therooms under consideration utilize a common exhaust duct locatedwithin the Penetration room. Since the model assumes perfectmixing occurs within each room, the transfer air from the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms dilutes the temperature response for aleak in the Penetration room. Additionally, the Penetrationroom is especially sensitive to a leak in any other room underconsideration. For this purpose, an additional set of runs areprovided which models separate exhausts from each room. This isintended to prevent any diluting affects from transfer air betweenthe Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms and the Penetration room. The exhaust register is located in the southeast corner of thePenetration room (a relatively common area between all threerooms). The location suggests that the transfer air from thePump/Heat Exchanger rooms would not mix appreciably with the airflow from the Penetration room. Some mixing can be expected nearthe exhaust register, but it is not reasonable to assume thistransfer air could significantly dilute the Penetration roomtemperature response during a steam leak. This dilution affectcaused by the transfer air helps to explain the need for such a. lowSteam Leak Detection setpoint in the Penetration room. The following pages provide the results for the new analysis.Temperature vs. Time curves are provided along with the tabularresults for each set of conditions analyzed originally. Thecomputer output supporting these results follow the curves.Refer to the Results/Conclusions Section for a discussion of theaffects of the ventilation system changes.
