Activity Report for TC-13 Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM) Date: September 20, 2018 Chair: Sang-Ho Lee (KSCE) Co-Chair: Shang-Hsien Hsieh (CICHE) 1. Outline of TC 1.1. Objectives The followings are main objectives of the TC-13 Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM): (A) To develop extended IFC-INFRA standards to describe, represent, and exchange the life-cycle information of civil infrastructure (B) To develop technology roadmap, strategies and techniques for BIM-based asset management of civil infrastructure (C) To develop a recommendation of practice for BIM-based life cycle project management 1.2. Terms of Reference 3D oriented technology, representing the spatial and physical states of real structure, is an unavoidable trend in construction market. In addition, the technology for knowledge-based operation and management of various data and information occurring in the life-cycle of civil infrastructure is getting more important. BIM (Building Information Modeling) seems to be one of the most possible methodology and a tool to meet these demands. However, the level of BIM technology application in the civil engineering field is still very low and limited, compared to the architectural design and engineering field. BIM Technical Committee (TC-13) will play the pivotal role in setting up technology roadmap, strategy, policy, and standard of BIM in civil engineering. In addition, the TC will support the development of BIM-based asset management technics for civil infrastructure to meet the needs of the time. The main issues in this TC will be knowledge-based information management techniques for civil structures and technology development, related to reliable support of decision-making by management and operation of well-organized database created in the life-cycle process of civil infrastructure. 1.3. Expected Outcomes The main task is to set-up a new strategy and direction of technology development for BIM-based life-cycle information management of civil infrastructure. Open standards for the BIM and standardization techniques for the information management of infrastructure in each phase of life-cycle will be the main issues in this scope. Project management using BIM is also an important task. The set-up of a technology roadmap and cooperative system in the development of application technology for asset management of civil infrastructure is also important for solving the imminent

1.2. Terms of Reference

3D oriented technology, representing the spatial and physical states of real structure, is an unavoidable trend in construction market.

1.3. Expected Outcomes

The main task is to set-up a new strategy and direction of technology development for BIM-based life-cycle information management of civil infrastructure.

1.7. Historical Background

Technical Committee #13, Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM), was established in

the 21st ECM of ACECC held in Sydney. (September 16, 2011) - TC-13 had a co-chaired system run in parallel by KSCE and CICHE.

September, 2011 - August, 2013: CICHE and KSCE worked together to co-chair TC #13 (BIM TC) and summarized BIM-related guidelines and standards for BIM management.

Page 3: Activity Report for TC-13 Building Information Modeling ...acecc-world.org/TC/TC13/tcreport/TC-13 Activity Report for 24thTCC… · Technical Committee #13, Building Information Modeling/Management

September, 2013 - August, 2016: KSCE chaired this TC and made progress and proactive efforts

to develop the extended product data model for civil infrastructures and BIM standards. The TC also studied the roadmap and strategies of BIM-based asset management of infrastructure.

September, 2016 – August, 2019: KSCE and CICHE submitted a summary report of TC-13’s five-year activities to the 20th TCCM held in Hawaii (August 29, 2016). With the approval of an extension of another three-year term for the technical committee, KSCE and CICHE will lead TC 13 to continue promoting the spread of BIM technology in infrastructures.
