ACTIVITY 1: CHAPTERS 1 & 2

This is the first reading activity of the course for Chapters 1 (Definitions and

Background) and 2 (Diexis and Distance). Read and Follow the instructions

for the activity:

PART 1.

1. Watch the video: Introduction to Language Pragmatics

2. Read the Chapters 1 and 2 in the Book PRAGMATICS by George Yule

3. Read the Document WHAT IS PRAGMATICS in the virtual room

PART 2.

Write your answers to the following Questions in the FORUM: Defining Pragmatics

Think and discuss with your partners:

• When you talk to someone, are words the only aspect you pay attention to?

• How does context affect the way people communicate?

• How do you explain people have difficulties understanding each other even if they

speak the same language?

PART 3. – After Reading Chapter 3.

Answer the READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONNAIRE ON CHAPTERS 1, 2 AND 3

This questionnaire does not have a time limit to be answered but you only have

one attempt. The questions will ask you to:

a) Match concepts with their corresponding definitions from chapters 1, 2 and 3

b) Match examples with the type of deixis that they exemplify

c) Match referents with the words they refer to
