Summer Courses
Chinese universities use summer for courses on innovative topics.
We were invited to pursue the development and execution of two-week course on standards to run during the summer
Graduate level
PROS/CONS/ISSUES:– China only– Finding right people– Major effort—could cut into other worthwhile efforts– Opportunity to pilot a new program at China’s top university– In China, many standards developers are found in universities
3
Speakers for Class Lectures
Professors may feel unprepared to give a lecture on standards topics and welcome the chance to bring in an expert.
Speaker combined with packaged material would be a winning combination.
Perhaps develop special lecture to help students entering the Senior Design Project, when many schools introduce practical use of standards.
PROS/CONS/ISSUES:– Possible global need– Is this a good vehicle strategically?– Effort v. number of students reached per engagement
4
Mini-grants for Student Application Papers
Expanding mini-grant for Student Application Paper program.
Translation of flier into local languages.
Wider distribution of information.
PROS/CONS/ISSUES:– Potential to become a major program– Appeals to professors and students alike– Practical and fun—great teaching tool– If program grows too quickly, we may have a problem with
administration and money while we catch up
5
Additional Workshop Opportunities
Expanded two-day workshops at universities, such as …
802 Plus: How do the 802 standards relate to each other and how do non-IEEE standards in this arena relate?
How does one prepare a contribution for an IEEE Standard?
How does the entire process work in IEEE? In other standards organizations?
Workshops with a group of universities
Participating in academic conferences
Using our connections with universities to garner invitations to speak about standards education.
PROS/CONS/ISSUES:– Continuing/building on one of our strengths– Is this a good vehicle strategically?

Collaboration with CNIS
SA has an MOU with CNIS
Strong ties to faculty at China universities
Very interested in collaboration with the SA to develop material for use in universities and to find speakers for lectures, as discussed above, and in distributing the mini-grant flier
They already have a short training course (4 hours), which could be expanded.
And possibly developed into a joint certification program.
CNIS contacts are interested in possibly doing article or series of articles for the Standards Education eZine – History of standardization in China– Process of drafting standards, revising them, etc.

Recommendations
Get information about summer course before goal setting meeting in early 2011.
Work with Ning HuaContact CNIS to explore collaborationContact Tsinghua University to get more details
Pick a university to work with to pilot a class lecturer program in 2011 and assess value of expansion at year end.
DeVry’s Senior Project classes, e.g.
Translate mini-grant flier (Chinese and Spanish) and develop “marketing plan” for 2011.
