Activities Report 2015-2016
The Univ. Politécnica de Tulancingo Student Chapter (UPT Chapter) was established on October 18th, 2012 by students of the Master in Optical Computing. The purpose of the Student Chapter is to promote optics inside and outside of the university. Moreover, we are also interested in the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts in optics, photonics and related applications, which greatly contribute in the development of our research works. We think that by broadcasting the optical science in our community, we could arouse the interest of new generations, let people know the achievements, applications of optics, and the possibility to expand the developing of this area in our region.

Recruitment activities
Recruitment activities are highly relevant in order to explain to the new student about the benefits of belonging to the chapter, the activities that we have performed, and future activities we have planned. For this purpose, in September 2015 we gave a brief talk about our Student Chapter, including the activities realized during the Optics & Photonics 2015 Conference. After the talk we shared some meals with the new students. This event was successful because we could motivate to all the new students to become part of our Chapter.
Weekly research seminar
For this activity, the Optics faculty and the students use to present the results of their respective research work. The purpose of this activity is to bring a space to interact and discuss about the achieved results in the current research works, as well as to promote the interest in optics to other students. This seminar is realized every Wednesday.
Tell me about Science (Háblame de Ciencia) Twice a month the chapter members organize this event in order to talk about interesting optics related topics, which can be of interest of the community; our speakers are people who want to investigate about physics phenomena and share their knowledge with students. During these talks, the audience contributes with ideas, comments and questions, which make the event really interesting.
“Khet 2.0” Workshop A khet workshop is realized every year to demonstrate some basic principles of optics: the amazing part of this workshop is that people learn optics phenomena, enjoying the competition. Thus, the main objective of this activity is to prepare people for the next edition of the tournament that will take place in the next Optics + Photonics 2016.
Social Network Diffusion We are using social networks to promote optics related activities; we created a Facebook page where all the activities are published and photos are provided. The link of the Facebook Page is: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Univ-Polit%C3%A9cnica-de-Tulancingo-Chapter/132514420232286?ref=hl
SPIE Optics+Photonics 2015 Román Díaz-Reyes and Carlos Espinosa-Cabrera attended the Leadership Workshop and the Optics & Photonics 2015 Conference, organized by SPIE. During this event the Chapter Officers participated at workshops, conferences, as well as the Olympic Outreach Games. They also presented a poster of the activities of our Student Chapter.
Visiting Lecturer: Prof. Virendra Mahajan The conference "Wave front analysis" and the lecturers: “Diffraction effects of aberrations” and “Geometrical effects of aberrations” were imparted by Prof. Virendra Mahajan, as part of the Visiting Lecturer Program of SPIE. During these events the students of the Master in Optical Computing and the Ph.D. in Optomechatronics could have the opportunity to learn specialized topics related to optics and imaging. We are very thankful with Prof. Mahajan for sharing his knowledge with our community.
Social Activity
Meeting with the proffesor Virendra Mahajan, as part of the visiting lecturer program.
“Visualize your future” event In March 2015 our University organized an event called “Visualize your future”, whose purpose was to motivate to highschool students to become part of our community. Our Student Chapter took a place in the event by preparing some optics and imaging experiments to explain optics applications to young students. Hence they could be interested in optics related studies in the near future.
“8th International Research” Congress
Every year our University organizes a congress to present the advances and new research
that both students and faculty are developing. During the 8Th International Research
Congress some SPIE Student members could have the opportunity to present a poster
with their advances of their respective research project.
“Adaptative optics” conference
As part of the activities of our Student Chapter and the first anniversary of the Ph. D. in
Optomechatronics Dr. Eva Acosta Plaza, from the University of Santiago de Compostela,
was invited to impart a conference entitled “Adaptative optics”. During this important
conference we could learn about new advances in imaging and free aberration systems.
Financial report In this financial section, overhead for each of the items described are included. The amounts are
expressed in dollars for each activity throughout the period 2015-2016.
