Introduction and welcome

Welcometothisresourceforelfinleadersandhelpers.Theaimofthisresourceistoprovideyouwithideasinaddressingawiderangeofsuitablethemesandissueswith6to9yearoldsintheWoodcraftFolk.TheresourceshouldbeusedalongsideTheElfinLeaders’Handbookwhichincludesguidanceongroupdynamics,groupadministrationandinvolvingparenthelpers.WoodcraftFolkScotlandsecuredfundingfromTheScottishGovernmentthroughYouthLinkScotlandtoprovideanupdatedresourceofstructuredactivitiesbasedonouraimsandprinciplesspecificallyforelfins.TheactivitieswerecollatedfrompastandpresentelfinleadersacrosstheUKandareexamplesofwhathasworkedwellwithactualelfingroups.Theresultisasharingofideastohelpnewandexperiencedleadersandhelpersalike.

Notwoelfingroupsarethesameandflexibilityisthekeytousingthisresource.Groupsmeetindifferentplaces,withdifferentresources,fordifferinglengthsoftime,withdifferingneeds!Aparticulargroup’scircumstancesmayalsochangefromweektoweek.

Atypicalelfingroupsessionmightconsistof:• Game(10minutes)–Alwayschooseagamethatallchildrenknowsotheycanjoininasthey

arrive.• Circle(10minutes)–Newstime–Eachchild(iftheywant)tellsussomethingfromtheirpast

week.Youmayhavetolimitsomechildrentoonlyonepieceofnewsandotherswillbereluctanttosayanything.

• Activity(30-40minutes)• Game/Discussion/Singing(15minutes)• Manygroupsfinisheachgroupsessionwithoursong‘Linkyourhandstogether’.

Foreaseofusewehavesetouteachsessionwithanintroductorygame,anactivityandthensomecircletimediscussionpointswithtimingsgivenasaguideline.Thisisnotintendedtobeaformatthatyourgroupmuststicktoandasyoucanseeitdoesnotincludenewstime,furthergamesorsongs.Thepointisthatyoushouldadaptthesessionstoyourgroup’sneeds;takewhatyouneed,mixandmatch,becreative!Someactivitiesmaytakeupthewholeofyoursessionandsomeyoumayfeelyoucanseparateoutintotwosessions.Youdon’thavetofollowtheresourceinorder(pleasefeelfreetodipinandout),butbeawarethatsomeactivitieswillbeoutdoorsandsomeshouldbetimedaroundcertaindatesoftheyear.Thereshouldbemorethanenoughsessionsincludedforayear’sworthofgroupmeetings,andthenwehopetoinspireyoutogoonandcreateyourown.

AcorepartofTheWoodcraftFolkistodevelopchildren’sself-confidenceandactivityinsociety.Inanelfingroup,childrenshouldhavetheopportunitytotakepartindecidingthemes,prioritizingandevenleadingsessions.Itisthereforeimportanttotakethisintoconsiderationwhenusingthisresource.

A brief overview of the Woodcraft Folk

TheWoodcraftFolkisauniqueprogressiveeducationalmovementforchildrenandyoungpeople–bothgirlsandboys–designedtodevelopself-confidenceandactivityinsociety,withtheaimofbuildingaworldbasedonequality,friendship,peace,socialjusticeandco-operation.Ourmottois‘Spantheworldwithfriendship’.

Throughitsactivities,WoodcraftFolktriestogiveitsmembersanunderstandingofimportantissuessuchastheenvironment,worlddebtandglobalconflict,withakeyfocusinrecentyearsbeingsustainabledevelopment.

WeexpectallnewadultmemberstounderstandandaccepttheWoodcraftFolk’saimsandprinciples.Itisimportantthatnewgroupsdiscussthesethoroughly,andremainconstantlyawareoftheirpracticalimplicationsforhowthegroupisrun.Youcanfindtheaimsandprinciplesonthereverseoftheadultmembershipform.

Unlikeothertraditionalyouthorganisations,wedonothaveasetuniform;insteadourmemberschoosetowearclothingsuchasour‘woodiehoodies’ort-shirtsdesignedbyyoungpeoplefromourorganisation.

TheWoodcraftFolkwasestablishedasaneducationalmovementandcharityin1925,andwasrunentirelybyyoungpeople.WeoperateinEngland,Scotland,WalesandNorthernIreland.

Contrarytothemythsthatsurroundourname,wedonotundernormalcircumstances,hugtreesorcraftwood.Thename‘woodcraft’wasusedbytheinfluentialwriterandnaturalistErnestThompsonSetonattheturnofthetwentiethcentury.Woodcraftinthiscontextmeanttheskilloflivingintheopenair,closetonature.TheWoodcraftFolk,likeotheryouthmovements,tracesitsoriginsbacktoErnestThompsonSeton’spioneeringworkwithNorthAmericanyoungpeople.

Safeguardingisaboutpromotingthewelfareofchildrenandyoungpeopleandstrivingtokeepthemsafefromharm.Fortunatelykeepingchildrenandyoungpeoplesafeislargelycommonsenseandcanbeovercomebysimpleplanning.

ToassistGroupLeaderstheWoodcraftFolkhasdevelopedaseriesofpoliciesandprocedurestoenablegroupstoplanandpreparefortheirsessions.Thesepoliciesgiveadviceonrecommendedadult-to-childratiosandprovidevaluabletoolsforcompletingriskassessments,promptingGroupLeaderstoconsider:

Howtoplay:Sitinacircle.Onepersonbeginsbyintroducingthemselves,prefixingtheirnamewithadescriptivewordthatstartswiththesameletter–forexample“I’mSuperSarah”.Thepersonnexttothemcontinues,“That’sSuperSarah,I’mNaughtyNiamh”.Thiscontinuesaroundthecircleuntilthelastpersonhastonameeveryoneinthegroup.

Whatyouneed:Aparachute

Howtoplay:Allparticipantsstandinacircleholdingtheedgeoftheparachute.Goroundthecirclegivingthechildrenatypeoffruittobefortheremainderofthegameinthesamewayasyouwouldnormallynumberthemintogroups,somechildrenwillbeoranges,somepears,somebananas,someapplesetc.Fixapositionastheplacewherethecallerstands,thusensuringthatdifferentpeoplegetaturntobethecaller.Thefirstcallershoutsoutatleastonetypeoffruit,butpossiblytwoorthree.Allchildrenwhoarethattypeoffruithavetochangeplacesundertheparachute.Whoeverisnowstandinginthecaller’spositionisthecallerforthenextturn.Ifthecallershouts“FruitSalad!”everyonemustchangeposition.Thisgamecanalsobeplayedwithoutaparachute,ifthechildrensitinacircleandrunroundtheoutsidewhentheirfruitiscalled.

Whattodo:Thechildreningroupsdividethepicturesoffoodintothreecategories:healthy;unhealthyandeatinmoderation.Theythenlookattheorderingchosenbyothergroups.Thechildrenthenlookatthecookerybooksinpairstofindsomethingthatlooksyummyandsomethingthatlooksyucky,andsharethiswiththerestofthegroup,givingtheirreasons.

Thechildrenthentryfoodsthatmaybeunfamiliartothem(olives,mango,figs,blueberries,tofu,asparagus,rootvegetablecrisps,gherkins).

SessionThemes:Celebrating Diversity, Building Group Cohesion

IntroductoryGame:Sticky Aliens Duration:10minutes

Howtoplay:Choosetwopeopletobe‘thestickyalien’.Theyjoinhandsandrunaroundtryingtotigpeople.Whentheydo,thepersoncaughtbecomespartofthestickyalien.Thethreepeoplehavetoholdhands.Whentherearefourpeopleholdinghands,theyhavetosplitintotwos.Thesetwopairscontinuetryingtotigpeople,andhavingthemjoinonuntiltheygettofourpeopleagain,atwhichpointtheysplitintotwos.Thiscontinuesuntileveryonehasbeentigged.
