The Presidentʼs CornerMeteorologically speaking, the summer season begins on June 1 and for families with school age children, summer officially kicks off with the end of the school year. Regardless of whether you choose to spend more time in participating in outdoor activities or just kick back

and enjoy those lazy, hazy days of summer with a refreshing beverage, there will also be opportunities to pique your interest in woodworking.

On June 14 and 28, members who are interested in learning more about safe and proper use of hand and power tools are encouraged to sign up for classes being offered at the Woodcraft store in Woodridge for just $10 for the two sessions. On July 28th, DPWW will hold its annual auction of tools and related woodworking supplies. This is not only a great opportunity to sell your unused tools but also to pick up some items that you been hoping to add to your shop at an affordable price. Also consider taking advantage of the opportunity to take that special project you created in your shop and enter it in competition at the DuPage Country Fair held at the fairgrounds in Wheaton on July 25-29. Look for details on the fair on page 3 of this newsletter.

Be ready to take advantage of those rainy days that occur during summer months to turn out some of the toys that our club plans to distribute to underprivileged children at the upcoming Christmas season. Just stop by the toy table manned by Stan Anderson and Rick Ogren at our general meeting and pick up the plans for the toy-of-the-month. And do not forget to turn out a few extra toys for those special children in your own life. They will love them.

Dale Gustafson

If you have some computer skills and knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Publisher or some other page layout program, please consider volunteering to serve as editor of our monthly Newsletter in 2013. Contact Whit Anderson if you have questions or are seeking additional details about what is required.

If there is some special aspect of woodworking that you would like to see featured at a meeting or in a hands-on class, be sure to pass your suggestions along to Keith Rosche, Program chairman or Al Cheeks, Activities chairman. Both Keith and Al would welcome you to become a member of their committee.

If you are interested in becoming a Woodwork merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts, contact Dale.

Coffee MakersGotta have coffee at the meetings! Thanks

to those who pitched in at the April meeting.

Anyone is welcome to make coffee. Just arrive a little after 6:00 and join the fun with others preparing coffee, cookies, and cleanup after the meeting.

DuPage County FairHave you made something you are proud of

in the last year? If so, consider entering your woodworking project in the DuPage County Fair.

The fair is at the end of July, but deadlines to enter come up faster than you would think. At the May meeting there will be an opportunity to express your interest in entering a woodworking project in the fair. DPWW has occasionally offered the opportunity to enter the fair through the club. If there is enough interest from members, the club may do that this year.

Job trainingKeith Rosche

For the right unemployed person who is interested in woodworking, there is a free 14 week training program in Chicago at the West Town Training Partnership at 500 N. Sacramento Blvd. (312-563-9570). West Town offers an opportunity that really shouldn't be missed. If you're self motivated and serious about learning how to manufacture wood products, consider taking a Metra train to the Kedzie stop from Glen Ellyn and check out the workshop or see Keith Rosche for more details.

From Our LibraryWhat's your current woodworking interest?

Where do you consider your present skill level to be?

Look to the DuPage Woodworkers Library Index.

In the comfort of your own home, sit at your computer, access the DuPage

Woodworkers web site, dupagewoodworkers.org click on "Library" and, without having to remember a password nor user name, the index will be displayed. Credit to our, behind the scenes, Danny Yarbrough.

Novices and beginners might consider reviewing the General Woodworking section.

If just beginning setting up a shop see, the Workshop section.

Skilled woodworkers can select their favorite topic among the 26 divisions, or find any number of new projects to explore. The Woodworking Projects section i.e. has a dozen DVD's with demonstrations by various skilled craftsman, hosted by Graham Blackburn. Nothing better than sitting at your own computer or TV as you start and stop the DVD to understand the content at your own pace.

Print your own copy of the index and review it sitting in your favorite lounge chair.

Don't have a computer? Ask a fellow member to oblige you by printing you a copy.

Having found on the index just the book or video that interests you, note it's location in the cabinet, (section color and shelf number,)

Now you are ready to "check out" the item at the next general meeting.

Lets keep the cabinet orderly by putting the book back on the designated shelf if you decide not to check it out

Ken Everett

Have questions on how to proceed with a project have questions on where to start.

Look to the 20+ mentors listed on our website, (thanks Danny for the display.)

To access, click on "Members." For this you will need a "user name & password". Don't know them? Ask a board member or any other member with a good memory.

Greene & Greene Furniture: Poems of Wood & Light

One of our members, Howard Van Valzah has been in contact with woodworker and author David Mathias whose work Howard admires. David has written a book, Greene & Greene Furniture: Poems of Wood & Light and Howard has arranged to get five autographed copies which he will sell to DPWW members for $30. Howard's interest in this is admiration for the work of Greene & Greene and for the writing and work of David Mathias. Howard says of David's writing, "His enthusiasm for Greene & Greene is contagious." If you are interested in getting an autographed copy of this book, contact Howard.

New MembersBruce Kinney – Membership Chairman

Four woodworkers joined our club in April. We welcome the following folks to the DuPage Woodworkers club – Paul and Tyler Dodek from Burr Ridge, Ben Subak from Lemont and John Templin from Bartlett.

We are especially grateful to have these new members come on board. The DuPage Woodworkers club welcomes you. Our members will seek you out at upcoming meetings so we can get to know you.

Secretaryʼs Report Board Meeting of May 7, 2012Dale Gustafson called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Present were Bruce Kinney, Whit Anderson, Al Cheeks, Jack Pine, Ken Everett, Rick Ogren, Tom Perry, Stan Anderson, Don Burgeson, Keith Rosche, and Jerry

Johnson. Reminder: Any club member is invited to attend board meetings.

The minutes of the April meeting and the April treasurer’s report were approved.

The birdhouse challenge was entered by fourteen members who made eighteen houses. The first-prize winner, Whit Anderson’s stunning mansion style birdhouse, was donated to St. James to be auctioned at their annual fundraiser. Ken Everett was the second-prize winner, third place won by Stan Anderson. The houses were distributed to St. James, Sunrise Retirement Home in Glen Ellyn, Brighton Retirement Home in Wheaton and the DuPage Convalescent Center. All agreed to mount them and were very appreciative of the gifts.

Bruce related that five members signed up bringing our total to 184: four new and one returning member who hadn’t paid dues before being dropped at the March 1 deadline.

Scott Kobal of the Forest District will present the May program.

Al related the general woodworking seminar planning is complete. The program for beginners, to be held at Woodcraft (75th St. location), is scheduled for June 14 and 28. The fee is $10 and covers both sessions.

Ken raised the issue of potential participation in this year’s DuPage County

Jerry Johnson

Fair. The board is encouraging members to enter their work. A show of interest will be solicited at the May general meeting.

Woodcraft has been added to the August schedule for the library display cabinet according to Jack. Some of the items on display have been in the cabinet for two years and new items are requested. Please contact Jack or Wally Zaleski with your suggestions.

The Toy of the Month for March is a rocking horse. Stan will have templates and instructions at the general meeting. He has commitments for over 850 toys toward our goal of 2790 for the year.

The constitution and by-laws changes were approved by the general membership on April 25, 2012 and are now in effect. There were 42 proxy votes and 59 votes at the general meeting for a total of 102 “Yes” votes and no “No” votes. Since the board is now empowered to change the by-laws and in response to a commitment made at the general meeting Jerry proposed the following resolution: The Board shall notify the general membership of any changes adopted to the by-laws. The resolution was passed. Bruce will forward the new versions of the documents to Danny Yarbrough for inclusion in the web site material.

We have been contacted by a Boy Scout troop about sponsoring a woodworking merit badge counseling program. Because of the liability organizations now face with working with minors the board declined to take it on as a club activity but will make the information available to the membership for individuals who might be interested.

Rich Rossio and Jerry have agreed to head the auction committee for this year.

The meeting adjourned at 8:51 p.m.

Meeting Location

New MembersThe DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over

the region. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking.

If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.

If you have questions about joining the DuPage Woodworkers, please contact Bruce Kinney ([email protected]).
