Active Pursuit Tracking in a Projector-Camera System with
Application to Augmented Reality
Shilpi Gupta and Christopher Jaynes
University of Kentucky
Motivation
• Traditional human-computer interaction requires the use of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
• Discover new paradigms that lend themselves to collaborative work, decision making, and visualization tasks.
• Exploit active nature of a projector-camera system to develop new approaches to traditional vision algorithms (such as tracking).
Goals
(1) Design a straight-forward real-time tracking algorithm that has minimal setup requirements, and is independent of a priori calibration.
(2) Use the tracker as the basis for an augmented reality application that demonstrates a new approach to visualizing complex volumetric datasets.
Active Pursuit Tracking
• Estimate initial homography between camera and projector.
• Continually update homography estimate as the display surface moves by projecting virtual fiducials into the scene and detecting them in the camera.
Calibration Projection of Virtual Fiducials Tracking
Applications
• Data navigation and visualization of scientific datasets using the active pursuit tracker.
• Calibrate both devices to a world reference frame (application specific).
• Position virtual volume in world.
• Tracked plane slices the volume.
