WHY WE NEED THIS Now days, in a car engine all the four cylinders are active at all the time. There is no activated and deactivate management for cylinders. By understanding we conformed that there may be a loss of energy produced by engine while the vehicle is under moderate running condition. Our Active Cylinder Management (ACM) is designed to rectify this loss. INTRODUCTION As we all know, engine is controlled by Engine Control Unit called ECU. It senses signal from flywheel sensors and it controls the spark, fuel injection, etc. To save the economy of the fuel, we planned to change the program in the ECU.WORKING OF NORMAL IC ENGINE There are four strokes in engine. They are1. Suction2. Compression3. Power stroke4. Exhaust In suction Air fuel mixture is entered into the cylinder (For petrol engine) by inlet valve. In compression The mixture is compressed and pressured in the top of the cylinder. In power stroke By ECU spark is created in cylinder by electric supply, then the air fuel mixture blasted and the piston to moves down with heavy power. In exhaust The burned fuel mixture is exhausted by the exhaust valve. These are together called as one cycle. For every four strokes flywheel makes two complete rotations.Again by ECU the same procedure is repeated for all four cylinders.WORKING OF ACM ENGINE At normal condition, ACM works on the similar procedure of IC engine. The speed of the vehicle is sensed by the wheel. When the vehicle is under moderate speed, the 2 & 3 cylinder of the engine deactivate. It is obtained by reprogramming in the ECU. And also the fuel given to the 1 & 4 cylinders is quite increased. At moderate speed, the energy from the two cylinders is sufficient for running the vehicle. Then, when the driver pushes the accelerator all the four cylinders activate & the vehicle runs at normal condition.HOW CYLINDER IS DEACTIVATED It is fully controlled by ECU. When the speed of the vehicle is moderate between 1500-4000 rpm, ECU senses it. Then the fuel given to the 2 & 3 cylinder is cut off. It is obtained by cutting the supply given to the solenoid of the fuel injector. If the fuel is cut off, automatically there is no power stroke in the cylinder. Then, the fuel given to the 2 & 3 cylinders is saved. WHEN ACM ACTIVE/DEACTIVE When the speed of the vehicle reaches 1500-4000 rpm & also when the vehicle is under moderate speed, Active Cylinder Management (ACM) activates. It is activated till the speed is constant. When the speed is increased/decreased the ACM deactivate. When more torque is needed, ACM deactivates. When driver pushes the accelerator during constant speed, ACM deactivates. DIFFERENTIATION

NORMAL IC ENGINE

ACM ENGINE

Torque is high Cylinder management is not possible. Efficiency is high Doesnt saves fuel Torque is high Cylinder management is possible

Efficiency is very high Saves one complete cylinder fuel while cylinder management is active

ADVANTAGES OVER NORMAL ENGINES

We can increase the economy of the fuel. We can manage the functioning of the cylinders. Exhaust gas is decreased by this type engines. Pollution is liberated. It doesnt require any special cost for designing the ECU. Suitable for all types of cars having four cylinder engines.

ConclusionFrom this we conclude that our engine is more efficient when compared to normal IC engines. And also our Active Cylinder Management saves 30% of fuel, which is very essential.REFERENCESThe following are some reference links, which we use to get information about the paper.1. http://www.greencongress.com/2013/06/vwact-20130605.html2. http://www.caranddriver.com/photos3. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Fuel_Management
