the Larry Wehrs Tribute race held at LaCrosseFairgrounds Speedway in the middle ofJuly. When I first saw this event an-nounced on the schedule, I made sure topencil in the date on my calendar. I’vementioned before, I was pretty darn luckyas a kid to make many Wednesday nighttrips to West Salem during the LarryWehrs era of ownership. In the late 70’sand early 80’s my dad had to work mostweekends but had Wednesday nights off.

After years of reading about theCentral Wisconsin Racing Association(CWRA) drivers in the local racing papersracing 5-6 nights per week, I was able tosee all of them in person on manyWednesday nights. Eventually theWednesday night program at LaCrossecame to an end in the early 1990’s and theCWRA slowly faded away. Since then,there have been a few Wednesday night

specials at LaCrosse during the county fair or aroundthe 4th of July, but none involving the CWRA. TheCWRA came back into existence a few years ago,and I figured a Wednesday night at LaCrosse wouldbe a great opportunity to re-live the past.

In the past, we would arrive early to watchpractice. As kid, I would stare through the fence at theinfield pits and check out the cars of Tom Reffner andMark Lamoreaux. As an adult, I’m actually in the pitsand both these guys actually will take the time to talkwith me when I stop by. It’s one of the great things Ienjoy about short track racing. From the other side ofthe fence, they always seemed larger than life, but inperson, they’re just regular people.

The other item I enjoyed about the CWRAreturn to LaCrosse was the speed disparity betweenthe top and bottom of the field. These days there’s somuch talk about parity and equality but having vari-ance in speed of the cars makes things exciting. They

had a huge invert for both main events. Watching guyslike Carlson and Reffner (not Tom, but his grandsonColin) charge through the field made for great racing.You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll check out anotherCWRA show. Hopefully the LaCrosse County Fairtakes place next year and a guy can grab a corn dogbefore the show and see big crowd on hand for someold-school short track racing.

And finally, we are back. Despite this being anextremely challenging year for many racetracks, therestrictions and shutdowns also had an adverse impacton the overwhelming majority of our advertisers.Luckily for me, all of them were willing to participatein print issues for the second half of the season. Ican’t thank them enough for helping keep this littlepaper alive during the pandemic.

With all the historical writing I do, it’s only fittingthat I would fill you in on a retro racing event heldhere recently, as CWRA returned to the La CrosseFairgrounds after an over 25 year hiatus.

The Fair race at La Crosse Interstate Speedway,West Salem, WI., was a popular event throughout the

years. Starting back in 1957 when a dirt track wascarved out of the landscape there, and later whenLarry Wehrs and others had the track paved for highspeed auto racing. The Central Wisconsin RacingAssociation was an integral part of racing at the trackfor many years. Wednesday night was the designatednight for racing there, (Probably because it was theonly night available to host CWRA) and racing wasgreat featuring drivers, Dick Trickle, Marv Marzofka,Rich Somers, Mike Miller, Tom Reffner, LarryDetjens, Joe Shear, Jim Back, Dave Watson, BobJusola, Larry Behrens, and so many others. Moveahead to 2020, and you have CWRA returning onWednesday night, July 15th to the La Crosse Fair-grounds Speedway, for a race during Fair week.Unfortunately, the Covid 19 situation put the kibosh onthe Fair, but it was decided the race event would goon.

What great racing it did indeed provide. As itturns out, it was quite the challenge for drivers, aCWRA vs NASCAR match-up, as a number of theSaturday night group went head to head with theCWRA Tour racers to see who was the best of thebest. Adding incentive was the fact the race was theLarry Wehrs Tribute race, with Larry on hand andextra purse money paid out. A strong field of 21 carsturned out for the race and close racing, and last lapheroics were the order of the evening.

CWRA utilizes a twin feature format for theirevents and the unpredictability of who will win on anygiven night makes the Tour attractive to drivers andfans alike. It was no different on this night, as Steve

Carlson took the first 30 lap event, while JessePokszyk won the 2nd. There was plenty of action inbetween as Carlson had to fend off a late race chargeby Colin Reffner who came up a few feet short ofwinning at the finish line. Not to be outdone, Pokszykused a last lap pass of Nick Clements to win in hisfeature event. Reffner didn’t win either race, but his2nd and 3rd place finishes made him the InauguralLarry Wehrs Tribute Race winner and with it a$500.00 cash bonus from Ultra Force Loading Ma-chines, by Wehrs. Also, of note was the event bringingout 1991 CWRA Champion, Mark Lamoreaux to race.The 69 year old driver didn’t disappoint either, as heled a number of laps in the first 30 lapper, ultimatelyfinishing a close 3rd in the end.

Truly a special night of racing, bringing backmemories of what was both a weekly Wednesdaynight racing occurrence and an Annual event with theFair. Wehrs Machine and Racing Products, Bangor,WI., along with Bentley Trucking, Des Moines, Iowa,and Iron River, MI., made it happen this year, hope-fully it can be brought back in 2021 only with the Fairactually going on this time!

Clason 30 lapper number twofound Pokszyk 1st followed by Nick Clements,Reffner, Henderson, Paine, Harley Jankowski,Christenson, Weinfurter, Beale, and Dave Satorius.Reffner had a good night financially as he was also theBentley Trucking Fast Qualifier. That earned the 3rdgeneration Reffner racer a cool $100 cash fromBentley...It was an epic battle in the first 30 lap racebetween Carlson and Reffner, and Steve was thankfulfor how Colin raced him. “My car was getting so tight,he could have got into me a number of times, but hedidn’t. I like racing with him, he’s a gooddriver.”...Matt Henderson who got off to a terriblestart to his season decided to bring his other race carout to the CWRA race and see how he’d do. “We justwanted to come out and see what we could do. Theway things have gone this year, we just wanted tohave some fun, and we did!” Henderson had a strongcar all night and was rewarded with two 4th placefinishes in the 30 Lap mains...Another great eventhonoring a former CWRA racer, was the John BrevikClassic at Marshfield Motor Speedway, Marshfield,WI., Saturday night, July 11th. CWRA brought 21 carsto the event and some super racing was seen by thehuge crowd on hand. 30-lap feature winners on thenight included Jeff Weinfurter and Colin Reffner.Remember seeing John Brevik racing many timesthrough the years. Always competitive, John brought alot of positives to the sport...

Looking back in time, at La Crosse InterstateSpeedway, on July 17th, 1970 it was the Fair 100 race.Tom Reffner took the Feature win, and was followedby, Dick Trickle, Jim Back, Marv Marzofka, and RoySchmidtke. Dale Pennel won the Consolation and 1stheat race, with John Brevik taking the 2nd and Backthe 3rd. Fast time went to Marv Marzofka. A crowd

of 5,200 attended the event. On Wednesday night, July21st, 1971 it was the Fair Opener 50 at La CrosseInterstate Speedway. Marv Marzofka won the 50 Lapfeature in front of Rich Somers and Jim Sauter. The15lap semi-feature went to Greg Delapp, while heatrace victors were Fred Beckler, Warren Droesser,and Larry Behrens. Behrens also won the fast dash.

We started off the month of July by celebratingAmerica’s independence with, of course, short trackstock car racing at the Rockford Speedway, where theStar Spangled 76 brought forth the Big 8 late modelsfor the series opener.

As one might expect, track regulars fared prettywell, with Max Kahler taking the lead early andholding off several advances from varied competitors.Tom Gille came back from several problems to finish astrong second. I think he started in the rear severaltimes after being involved in mishaps, and came back.I have to give a shout out to fifth place finisher JeffWakeman. He stayed out of trouble all night, keptmaking laps, and finished in fifth. He does not have themost modern high-tech equipment, but still finishedhigher than most. He does this quite often in longraces, and it works.

The American Short Trackers were also inaction tonight, with visitor Kyle Stark taking the wonover Kelly Evink. Visitor Brandon Delacy was presentbut had his car expire early in the night. Tim Finstadhad another good run in finishing third.

Austin Fowler took the win in the Roadrunner“Paul Revere Midnight Ride,” A race run in nearlytotal darkness, with only spotlights on the cars roofnumbers. If everyone stays racing, it is usually atrouble-free race, but if someone spins or something, itcan get kind of hairy. Austin drove a flawless race toget the win.

We took in a regular Friday night show at theTomah-Sparta Raceway recently. Promoter GregOliver is doing some very good things here. The staffis very friendly and low-key. Veteran racer Scott“Chico” Riedner is the competition director. Theseguys have been around racing their whole lives, andthey know plenty. Dan Deicher does the announcinghere, and has a clear and concise voice, knowssomething about all the drivers, and keeps a greatbanter going.

It was a night when Steve Parsons was present,handing out huge trophies during his ongoing KimParsons Memorial trips to various speedways, promot-ing organ donors at tracks all over the state. Thesetrophies are HUGE, and the drivers work very hard towin these.

They have a bell planted into the ground here,and each feature winner gets to ring the victory bell

after posing for photos. Modified feature winner BradWildes was so enthusiastic that he pulled it right out ofthe ground. Everyone got a bit of a chuckle out of thatone!

The Six Shooter division is very popular, and withMadison International Speedway still not being allowedto open as of this writing, some drivers who wouldnormally race there make some trips to Tomah.Joshua Zacharias comes from the Madison area andruns pretty strong here. Sean Worman has racednearly every week here, and is often in the top three infeature finishes. Teammates Dan Frye and MattMoore have won the majority of the features here thisyear in a very competitive division that is fun to watch.Frye won the feature on this night.

Tyler Sauter looked pretty dominant in taking thesportsman feature very strongly. He used an outsidepass to take the lead and checked out a bit.

The four-cylinder Hornet feature was a veryinteresting affair, with plenty of passing and dicingthroughout. Chandler Turner took a very hard-foughtvictory home tonight. Rockford Speedway regularSteve Putman had a strong race going but got a littlehigh off turn two and ran into and up onto the back-stretch wall, nearly going over. He ran back downonto the track and everyone avoided his car, so itcould have been much worse. Going over the wallwould have surely meant flipping over, and he kept iton the wheels.

Hobby Stock feature winner was BrandonGallagher, who pulled out from a tight five car packearlier in the race to get the win

This track reminds me very much of the oldColumbus 151 Speedway in so many ways. it is a veryinexpensive, fun-filled place to watch some racing,with a very laid-back atmosphere. If you are lookingfor a fun night out on a budget this is a place to checkout The races are run quickly and the show wasfinished by 9:42 PM.

We returned the following week once again, withthe Midwest Dash series making their season debut.Local driver Steve Rozek took the win in a very tightlycontested feature race. Mark Dewey made his firstever trip here, and started off kind of slowly, but bothhe and the car gained speed all night, and he caughtback up to the lead pack to finish a strong second andmight have won in a couple more laps.

Several visitors from Minnesota were present inthe hobby stocks, but it was local driver Alex Rudgetting the job done. Bill Schott took the sportsmanfeature win, while Taylor Dawson won the hornetfeature. Taylor has much experience in varied formsof stock cars, and his experience showed tonight. TheSixers were super competitive, with many visitorspresent, and Dustin McCracken took the win.

On July 11 I returned to Rockford once again,with the season debut of the Sixers division. I came upwith some thirty-three cars in the pits for this division,although a couple never made it out to race. Theaction was as you would expect, very thrilling! Lots ofnew drivers and some returning veterans make this adivision not to miss. David Cavin took the win overAustin Schott, who came down from northwestern

Wisconsin. The “Beerman” Sean Worman took homethird. He has been chomping at the bit to race at hishome track here, and is also missing his Friday nightstop at Madison International Speedway, which stillhas not been allowed to open. He has found plenty oftracks to travel to, including most Friday’s at Tomah,as well as trips to the Dells and Slinger. Best appear-ing car in this division in my opinion is the sharplooking orange Monte Carlo of Justin Tyler. He wonthe semi or B-main tonight.

Douglas Nighswonger raced all last year in theSixer division, and started at the back of the field thewhole season. He learned quite a bit and now when hehas a front or mid-pack starting spot he is taking it, andlooking very racey. His Dad, long time Roadrunnercompetitor Curt, now has a sportsman car that hedebuted with tonight. Overheating woes sidelined himearly, but he got some laps in.

Garrett Braden hopes to have put some strugglesbehind him, as he won his first feature of the season inthe Bandit division. “We have had nothing but troublethis year,” Said Garrett. “We couldn’t get the car torun for more than one good lap. We replaced partafter part and even rented the track twice trying tofigure it out. We finally got it.” It was the WT sensor,which controls the variable valve timing on the engine.Glad to see they found the trouble. That is veryfrustrating stuff.

Another Bandit driver with troubles this year hasbeen Mike Mahurin. On the opening night he gotcaught up in a pretty serious wreck.”I worked on thiscar for two weeks, every night to get it fixed. Ireplaced the tie-rod ends on the left side and just abouteverything on the other side,” Said Mike. This was alldone during a stretch of extremely hot weather, whichmust not have been pleasurable to work in. This driveris very dedicated to the sport and does whatever ittakes to get back on track.

Steven Erickson Jr. ran off to the sportsmanfeature win, looking very strong. With impendingstorms approaching, the Bandit figure-eight wasquickly run off, with Nick Schneider taking the win.They worked very hard to get this show accomplishedin a timely manner and beat the rain.

We also took in another show at the State ParkSpeedway on July 15th. The pure stock divisioncontinues to really impress me here. It is simplyamazing how competitive this class is here, Thenumbers are not huge, but this group really races oneanother hard to the end from front to back. The actionliterally takes your breath away, and that is just from afan! Jeff Spatz edged out Mitch Stankowski on thisnight to get the feature win.

One driver in this division who has made greatstrides is Brian Plisch. I think this is only his secondyear of racing, but he has been running real well hereand other tracks that he races at. He has definitelystepped up his game by several notches.

The super late models had a couple of visitorstonight, as they likely are preparing for the upcomingLarry Detjens Memorial. Dan Fredrickson made the

trip over to try it out, and finished third in the latemodel feature. Another driver making a showing wasEric White from Indiana.

There is a whole group of hungry young driversthat are coming from this area that you have alreadyheard much about and will continue to do so. JustinMondeik is one of them, and he took the feature win.Brock Heinrich worked the restart cone to his advan-tage and took second. Add in other upcoming youngdrivers Luke Fenhaus, Dillon Mackesy and GabeSommers and the future looks bright.

Greg Blount took his first feature win here of2020 in the mini-mods, in his appropriately numbered“2020” car, and Tyler Custer took the win in the mini-stocks.

I had a chat with long time mini-mod racer JohnLietz, intending to do a little write-up on him here. Ifound out that I cannot contain this story in one part ofa column, so in one of the winter issues I will put it alltogether. There are just too many stories to contain ina few paragraphs! Between he and fellow racer DaleLouze, I have some real interesting stories to writeabout in future articles about their racing history.

The Midwest Dash series was on tap at theRockford Speedway on July 18th, the night after theirstop at Tomah.

Phil Malouf had the engine expire in his car atTomah, so left quickly and took the car to his shop inorder to change engines and make the Rockford show.They went right to work and got it swapped, putting ina junkyard engine which was even missing a fewitems that had to be put back together. Ricky Wilson scored a bit of an upset in takingthe feature win. He alluded to the fact that he alwaysraces at the Bahama Brackets here each year, andthat helped with his knowledge of the track. Hestarted his racing career a few years ago at some ofthe Chicago area tracks but said he doesn’t reallyhave a home track anymore, just races wherever. HisDad, Rick, also has raced at the Brackets nearly everyyear since its inception.

Jon Reynolds Jr. tookcontrol and drove off to thelate model feature win. Itwas nice to see Big 8 racerHunter Drefahl show up torace with the late models.

Chad Smith avoidedproblems in the sportsmanfeature and took the featurewin, over CodyHouseweart, who did thesame.

Scott Koerner tookthe win in the midgetsfeature. Scott races a late

model and races both on dirt and asphalt.Justin Wagner took the win in the Roadrunner

main event. He is having an outstanding season thusfar.

The new high school division got their firstchance to race tonight. Six high schoolers took to thetrack to represent their schools. Janesville (Wi.)Parker high school racer Tyler Vincetich took theinaugural feature win. Rockford Harlem studentDouglas Nighswonger was the heat winner. Bothdrivers were absolutely overjoyed with their wins. Ithink you will see both of these drivers doing a lot ofracing in the future.

Despite what seems to be limited opportunitiesto go racing this year, the month of July provided quitethe smorgasbord of events in Wisconsin and I madesure to take advantage of it.

The biggest event for me was the prestigiousSuperSeal Slinger Nationals presented by Miller Lite atthe Slinger Speedway and the 41st edition of thesummer classic drew a very strong field of 29 superlate models. A field consisting of Bubba Pollard,Stephen Nasse, Corey Heim, Sammy Smith, andCarson Hocevar taking on Wisconsin standouts TyMajeski, Casey Johnson, Dennis Prunty, Steve Apel,Rich Bickle, Alex Prunty, Brad Mueller, LukeFenhaus, and Derek Kraus is completely stacked andthey all didn’t disappoint. The anticipation andexcitement on the originally scheduled Tuesday nightwas quickly replaced by chaos as a sudden monsoonsent everyone running for cover as tents werewrecked and the track was drenched. A shoulder-deep lake was formed in turn one and a waterfallactually flowed over the turn two wall, postponing theevent to the next evening. Like racers do, everyonemade the most of the extra night and bright and earlythe next morning, some special people stepped up tofix the damages to the facility so the Nationals couldcontinue. Ryan Kuhl from Town and Country LawnService, John DeAngelis from DeAngelis Construc-tion, and Jerry Mueller from AllPro Asphalt Pavingalong with Bob’s Auto all pitched in to make repairson the track. In the case of Jerry Mueller, not manypeople realize he was set to compete in the Nationalsbut a disputed on-track incident the previous Sunday inthe Big 8 race resulted in him withdrawing despitealready buying tires and yet in lieu of the disagreementwith the track, he still showed up when needed to keepthe race going. That’s a true racer and he should becommended for his efforts. The race fans themselvesalso have to be commended as they all showed up thenext night and even contributed a record $12,500 tothe lap leader bonus payouts.

Although delayed one night, the Nationals stillprovided plenty of excitement and Ty Majeski was theman to beat as he scored his second Nationals victory

over Casey Johnson andLuke Fenhaus. With thelap leader bonus payoutsadded to the winner’sshare of the purse, the2020 Slinger Nationalswas believed to be therichest asphalt Wiscon-sin super late model racein history and judgingfrom the positive com-ments from the travelingdrivers and everyoneinvolved, next year’sevent should be evenbetter.

Just a few days after the Slinger Nationals, Iheaded to Road America for a pair of IndyCar racesas the weekend event featured a double-header forthe sleek Indy machines. The Road America eventsalso allowed fans to attend with less limited restrictionsand with plenty of room to spread out, everyone did afine job of safely enjoying the events. Someone had totake the lead on eventually holding a major sportingevent with fans and Iwas proud of RoadAmerica to be able topull it off and I washonored to experienceit. Despite the nervous-ness of some outsideobservers and officials,the track staff and onceagain, the Midwest racefans proved they couldresponsibly attend anevent and the weekendwas a success withvery little problems. The racing was pretty good too asScott Dixon won the Saturday race and FelixRosenqvist scored his first career IndyCar win onSunday after taking the lead from McLaren’s PatoO’Ward at the white flag.

In between the IndyCar events I trekked out toOutagamie County Speedway in Seymour and thePlymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth for World of Out-laws Late Model Series events. It was my first trip toSeymour and I was pretty impressed with the facility.A good sized field of 36 dirt late models showed upwith the Dirt Kings Tour adding their stars to theWorld of Outlaws regulars. While the heat racesweren’t too exciting with little passing, the featureevent proved to be much better as Jason Raun and

Brandon Sheppard dueled for the win before Sheppardeventually prevailed. The next evening at Plymouthfound an impressive 39 late models in the pits evenwith the SummerNationals taking place at the sametime in Illinois. The strong car counts should go a longway in bringing in future World of Outlaws LateModel events and it was refreshing to see the localdrivers support these two events. Once again BrandonSheppard charged to the victory while Wisconsin

favorite Jimmy Marskept him honest insecond. The drive of thenight came from localweekly racer JustinRitchie who took it tothe Outlaws and fin-ished third. Even thoughhe was knocked back afew spots in tech due toa fairly new “droop”rule, the strong run froma local racer shouldencourage other locals

to participate more in these special shows.From the dirt it was back to the asphalt at the

Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna for thesecond round White race from the Red, White, andBlue Series for the super late models. The secondround traditionally has a longer feature race and thisyear’s main event consisted of 96 laps in honor ofRoger “The Bear” Regeth. The field took a scheduledhalf-way break at 48 laps but there probably wasn’tenough adjustments to be made to catch BobbyKendall who dominated the event en route to thevictory. The Series points heading into the final eventnext month are up for grabs as Red Race winnerBrent Strelka and Andy Monday both experiencedproblems and finished down in the running order.

The month began with the TUNDRA Super LateModel Series opener at the Dells Raceway Parkwhere Dalton Zehr passed Mike Lichtfeld late to winand ended with the series’ second round at theJefferson Speedway. Jefferson has a unique racinggroove especially off turn four where drivers caneasily run three wide in a charge toward the check-ered flag and the super late models always put on a

While Dave Noble gained most of his notoriety on theSouth Eastern Minnesota dirt tracks of Kasson, Lansingand others, he also gained many followers in the Twin

Cities metro area. For many seasons, Dave would tow upto the cities to run weekly shows at Elko Speedway or atthe now shuttered Raceway Park in Shakopee. Dave wasalso a guarantee to make an appearance at the Minnesota

State Fair for many, many years. RIP Dave Noble.

show. Jordan DeVoy set a new track record in qualifying but Gabe Sommersturned back all challenges while leading from start to finish to win the 75-lapmain event.

The most fun I’ve had at a race in a long time occurred during thespecial King of the Ol’ Cornfield Sandox 25 contested between six hobbystock drivers and six sportsman drivers on the smaller Jefferson track. Theevent, dreamed up by track announcer Randy Kamenick, originally paid $250to win but the purse soon grew exponentially a as sponsors, fans, and crewschipped in. In the end, around $3,700 in cash and prizes were collected withsome of the fun ones being a bottle of Captain Morgan to the second placefinisher and a twelve pack of Coke to third place so they could party and $250put up by a guy from Illinois to the highest finishing car that sported deroga-tory comments towards the Green Bay Packers. With all the money on theline as well as the hype, the race was super intense as the big cars tried tonavigate around the small track and the racing was physical. In the end,Brandon Angileri muscled Bud Riedner out of the way for the win andhonestly with all that was at stake it was no surprise some feathers would beruffled. Overall it was a fun event that really pumped a lot of excitement intothe night and I hope it continues in the future.

August will provide may more opportunities to head out to the tracks asbelieve it or not, this season begins to head towards its stretch run. KyleBusch and Bubba Pollard are set to race in the Dixieland 250 August 4th atWisconsin International Raceway and the World of Outlaws Late ModelSeries return to the Beaver Dam Raceway also on August 4th. Road Americawill hold its IMSA Sports Car event on the first weekend of August and theNASCAR Xfinity Series heads there on August 8th. Slinger Speedway hasthe Carl Wegner Memorial on August 23rd and Dells Raceway Park holdssome Alive for Five super late model races on August 1st and August 15th. I’llbe sure to hit as many of them as I can and you should to as this crazy seasoncontinues.

There are many crown jewel races that driverswould love to etch their name into the record books ashaving claimed victory. We’re pretty lucky to have amany of these prestigious asphalt races here in theMidwest. One of them is slated for Tuesday, August4th at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna.

The Dixieland 250 has the proverbial “who’swho” on the list of winners, with the legendary DickTrickle scoring the inaugural win back in 1991. It’sfitting that Wisconsin’s most popular driver was thefirst to leave his mark on this event, and that certainlyelevates the significance of the race as well.

The Dixieland is definitely one that manyhardcore racers circle on their calendar to enter. Itsays a lot when the reigning NASCAR Cup SeriesChampion also plugs it into his schedule.

Yes, Kyle Busch will be making a return to theunique half-mile, D-shaped oval this year. By allaccounts, this facility is a fun and challenging trackwhere many racing greats have battled. It holds aspecial place in their hearts from back-in-the-daywhen they ran here. You can bet that many nationally-known retired racers, such as Mark Martin and (the

sometimes retired) Tony Stewart will be payingattention to who nabs the checkered flag at this one.

I imagine Matt Kenseth will perhaps have someinterest in seeing what happens at the Dixieland 250 aswell, and likely deep in his heart of hearts, he may bewishing he were poised to have an entry as well if itwere possible. It’s hard to say if Chip Ganassi, theteam owner for his current Cup ride would even lethim run this event. It’s been well-documented howGanassi didn’t want his former driver, Kyle Larson torun any extracurricular racing activities.

This year’s entry list is quite the buffet of talent,even beyond Busch, including seasoned veterans, likeRich Bickle, Johnny Sauter, who has won the eventtwice, and allegedly Dan Fredrickson.

I say “allegedly” because Fredrickson is oftenlike the proverbial flatulence in the wind. He seeminglyenjoys keeping an air of surprise to his racing. He’sbeen listed as an entry for events sometimes in thepast and ends up not showing. And then there aretimes when he shows up out of the blue and flexes hismuscles.

Case in point: State Park Speedway on July 16th.Fredrickson just showed up for their regular race nightwithout much fanfare, laid down the second fastesttime in qualifying and went on to post a third placefinish in the feature.

I personally hope he does choose to show up forthe Dixieland, as he always raises the level of compe-tition and I enjoy his swagger in the pits. For therecord, I did try to call him to confirm his plans, but hisvoicemail was full. He did respond to a text inquiry. Itwasn’t a “yes,” but it wasn’t a “no,” so we’ll just haveto wait and see if the Northfield, MN driver shows.

Casey Johnson has been on fire again this yearand pretty much a threat to win wherever he showsup. Not only has he won the last two championships atWIR, he looked pretty stout at the Slinger Nationals,posting a second place finish. He’ll be looking tobecome a two-time winner of the Dixieland.

Last year’s winner and reigning Slinger NationalsChamp, Ty Majeski will be wedging the race into his

NASCAR Truck Seriesschedule to defend the title.His Truck Series teammate,and reigning Redbud 400winner, Carson Hocevar hasalso entered the race. FellowTruck Series competitor,Derek Kraus, who is in thetop 10 in the Truck pointstandings will also be makingthe return to Wisconsin forthe event.

Former Midwest TourChampions, Dalton Zehr,Andrew Morrissey, andJonathan Eilen will all becoming with their best pieceto challenge for a win too.Last year’s Tour Rookie of

Dixieland Delightthe Year, Gabe Sommers will be ready for battle,along with other series standouts who are regulars orpart-timers: Paul Shafer, Austin Nason, JohnnyDeAngelis, Skylar Holzhausen, Dennis Prunty, andRyan Farrell.

Justin Mondiek has been racking up somesubstantial wins already this season. He nabbed hisfirst Midwest Tour feature at State Park Speedwayfor series opener on July 25th—the Detjens Memorial.He hopes to keep his momentum rolling into theDixieland and make it two series wins in a row.

Some of the favorite regulars who run at WIRwill also be making a bid for the title, like current pointleader, Brent Strelka, reigning Red, White, & BlueChamp, Maxwell Schultz, Bobby Kendall, JesseOudenhoven, Andy Monday, Trevor Vandermolen,and Pete Vandermolen.

Of course much of the Midwest is buzzing aboutBubba Pollard coming to make his WIR debut. It willbe fun to see how he adapts to the track and if he canpull off another win to add to his impressive accoladesthat he’s already been racking up this year.

Sammy Smith will be making a bid for thecheckers out of the KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports)stables. And Cayden Lapcevich from Canada will betraveling to Kaukauna and racing in a car prepared byformer ARTGO WIR winner, Bobby Blount.

I’m sure I’ve missed some competitors and thereare almost always going to be last minute additions—but surely you can see that the competition will be T-H-I-C-K.

Gates open up at 4pm on Tuesday, August 4th.Qualifying begins at 5pm and the first green flag willdrop at 7pm. Advance tickets are just $20 and areavailable online at midwesttour.racing. And as always,the event is kid-friendly. Kids 12 and under are FREE.

The month of July has been a busy one for mespent traveling from small town to small town, observ-ing an inordinate amount of racetracks. The crazymiddle summer month started off at Cedar LakeSpeedway for the mega three-day World of Outlawsshow. This was the first time outside of the WorldFinals in Charlotte, NC that both World of Outlawstouring series would be together at a race track. Theevent offered race fans the best of the Open Wheelworld and the best of the Late Model world all to-gether on one stage over one scorching hot weekend.Adding to the excitement of the event for me was thefact that I was also moving into a new place over theweekend coupled with me deciding this would be theweekend I also break in a new laptop for photoediting. Unfortunately, FedEx failed to deliver on time,and I had to make my way to Cedar Lake without theability to edit photos. Technology is a savior thoughand I was able to edit photos on my iPhone thanks toNikon’s handy SnapBridge application and Lightroommobile!

The Cedar Lake event wasbilled as the first major sportsevent since the Covid 19 pan-demic hit. There were Covidscreenings at every entry pointsurrounding the track, somethingI’m sure we will see goingforward at sporting events orlarge crowd gatherings. Thursdaynight’s event showcased a ratherunique elimination type eventfollowing qualifying. They wouldcaution the race every 5 laps andeliminate the last 4 drivers fromcompetition. They did this untilthe field was whittled down from20 to 8 competitors. They thencompeted in an 8-lap shootout for$3,000.00. This made for some exciting last lappassing in both the Sprint Car and Late Model show-downs. The light schedule on Thursday night wasactually quite refreshing as the heat of the day reallywore on and it was nice to get off the track. I wasable to edit photos on my iPhone and send them intoWorld Of Outlaws, despite the questionable WIFI andcellular connection at Cedar Lake Speedway. Fridayevening’s races saw an incredible feature event forthe Late Models as Georgia Rookie, Ashton Wingerheld off defending World of Outlaws champion,Brandon Sheppard for his first ever Outlaws victory.His excitement as he climbed out of this car anddropped the steering wheel like a microphone wasicing on the cake for a wonderful evening. Brad Sweetswept the weekend in the World of Outlaws SprintCars and The Rocket Brandon Sheppard accom-plished what he wasn’t able to do Friday night andpicked up the victory on Saturday Night. The caveat toSaturday night’s racing was the live broadcast on CBSSports Network. It’s great to see dirt track racing geta spotlight on live television.

My Outlawadventures continuedthe next weekend inthe Green Bay area asI made my way toOutagamie Speedwayin Seymour, WI. Thetrack was your run ofthe mill fairgroundfacility with a coveredgrandstand. Despitelackluster presales onevent tickets, the placewas filled with fansfrom one end of thegrandstand to the next.Brandon Sheppardmade it back to backvictories taking hometop honors at the track.

Outlaw on the road

The next night we made the 75-mile drive south toPlymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI. I had to laughat the barn we parked by on the fairgrounds as it had asign that read, “Sheep/Goat” at the top. Perhaps it wasmeant for Brandon Sheppard “Sheppy” and ScottBloomquist “The Goat”? The facility was one of myfavorites I have seen this year with homes in thebackground and people out on their roofs watching theraces. A much welcome sight to other facilities thatstruggle with the neighbors loving living by a race-track. The cars staged between the front stretch andthe grandstand and this was a great place to capturephotos and listen as the fans cheered before and afterthe races. Brandon Sheppard repeated as winner andmade it three straight in the state of Wisconsin with hisvictory. The Grand Nationals were my highlight of theevening. The class is almost a hybrid between anasphalt Late Model and a dirt Super Stock.

After being home at my new place for less than24 hours I made the trip north to Gondik Law Speed-way in Superior for a rare Tuesday night race. Theevent itself was questionable up until race day as thetrack needed to sell a certain number of tickets inorder to make the event happen. Thanks to some greatsponsors and resilient race fans they were able to getthe show in. Brandon Sheppard dominated the nightleading all 50 laps and holding off Lucas Oil Dirt racerJimmy Owens in the process. We left the state ofWisconsin having witnessed Brandon Sheppard andthe Rocket racing team on a hot streak of 4 straight.

I was once again home for a short period of timebefore heading north west to North Dakota for thefinal leg of the Northern swing with the Outlaws.Grand Forks and River Cities Speedway was slatedfor Friday night and the finale at Red River ValleySpeedway in West Fargo on Saturday. Mother naturehad alternative plans and our Friday race got pushed toSunday evening. I spent Friday night out on the townin Fargo with friends and geared up for the festivitiesat West Fargo on Saturday. Red River Valley had

good lighting and good races in a feature that sawDarrell Lanigan absolutely dominate the field andput an end to Brandon Sheppard’s streak. I ven-tured to River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks onSunday evening and was quickly amazed at thesight lines and shooting opportunities. I alwaysappreciate tracks with multiple vantage points forshooting and staff that allow you to do what youneed to do without interruption. The famous bullring certainly lived up to its reputation with excitingracing. The night seemed to be going along

smoothly until the Sprint Car feature. A race that drugon for what felt like an eternity with endless cautionsand red flags. But as my photography pal and adven-ture cohort Tim Hunt says, “Sprint cars are wildcards”. That was certainly the case this night. Theirfeature finally ended, and the Outlaws fired off theline. Ricky Weiss jumped to an early lead, butSheppard caught him in lapped traffic around halfwaythrough and sailed away to his tenth victory on theyear and his fifth out of six races.

I made the decision to make the trek back to thecities from Grand Forks after the races Sunday night. Ihad been on the road for what felt like forever and I

wanted to sleep in my own bed for once. Drivingdown Interstate 94 in the early Monday morninghours, I felt like Brandon Sheppard as I worked myway through lapped traffic. I thought to myselfhow great it would be to follow a series full timeand then I thought about how much work it wasjust for me to shoot photos of these races, Icouldn’t imagine having to race like that. I have alot of respect for the touring folks who take theirdirt circus from one town to the next. It’s adifferent way of life and for a few July days, I wasable to be an Outlaw with them.
