About the ACTION Camp

We hold International Summer ACTION Camp every year in a different country of the Asia-Pacific region. Currently about eight countries have collaborated with us namely Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. We are always looking for more collaboration from other countries of the Asia-Pacific and other regions.

Our Collaborators

ACTION Summer Camp 2014 was held in Fukushima, Japan where one of the worst nuclear power plant accidents in history took place 3.5 years ago. The theme was human caused disaster. Today, breathing in the air in Fukushima will not cause internal radiation, radioactive materials do not linger long in the air and the air dose has decreased to levels comparable to that of the days prior to the accident. These are some of the scientific facts about radioactive materials that the participants learned during the ACTION summer camp 2014. Through the 6-day long program consisting of lectures and workshops, the SCOPRPians gained knowledge about disaster medicine and had a chance to think deeply, discuss and work with students from different Asian countries. We also had field works which was a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand accounts on the reality of people living in Fukushima today.

Summer Camp 2015

This year 2015 FMS-Taiwan is hosting the ACTION International summer camp. The theme for this year is "City Disaster and Evacuation" During the camp, we expect to learn about disaster management from different perspectives from professionals as well as from each other through workshops, lectures, trainings, small working groups and discussions.

Some facts of disasters you did not know!!!

1. Every year over 25.8 million people are affected by a natural disaster across the world.

2. Avalanches travel at speeds of over 200 miles per hour. In 1962 in Peru, several tons of ice and snow slid down Huascaran Peak in the Andes Mountains and killed over 4000 people.

3. On December 26, 2004 a tsunami triggered by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused the most devastating tsunami in history killing over 226,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and the Maldives. In addition, millions of others were displaced.

4. Up to 10,000 people die a year as a result of an earthquake.

5. Floods are the number one deadly disaster in the United States accounting for over 46 percent of disaster related deaths according to disaster facts.

We are always looking for more ACTIONeers
