Nutrition and Learning Ability

The nutritional quality of our dietaffects our wellbeing throughout ourlives, but it has an even greater impacton children’s bodies and minds thatare still growing.

Studies by neuroscientists have foundthat low-quality nutrition duringchildhood can be detrimental to thedevelopment of cognitive capabilities,

such as learning, problem solving and memorising. Earlymalnourishment can lead to deficiencies in vision, fine motorsskills, language and social skills as well as an array of chronicillnesses, lasting well into adulthood.

A recent study showed students who had consistentlyinsufficient protein intake scored lower on achievement teststhan their classmates who had adequate nutrition.

Medical professionals have long emphasised that a healthybreakfast plays an especially important role for in a child’swellbeing. Without a boost at the start of their day, young brainscannot function well. To do its work, the brain needs a sufficientsupply of healthy fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water.

By lunchtime, most children’s bodies are depleted and in direneed of quality nutrition. Having access to a healthy lunchsatisfies the body’s needs in this regard.

An afternoon snack before play or study time is recommended, however sugary items should be avoided.

Dinner should help your child to wind down and relax beforebedtime. Keep in mind that foods containing high amounts ofsugar late in the day can lead to sleep disruptions and/or upsetstomachs.

Parents have a great responsibility to invest in their offspring’snutritional health, however they should not be expected to do itall on their own. A concerted effort involving families, schools, government agencies and community services is necessary toimprove the nutritional welfare of all members of society andespecially the young.

“Eating right” is one of many wellbeing areas regularlydiscussed with our students at Tewantin State School. Inaddition to such valuable conversations, we have supervisedeating times at our school and a tuckshop that supplies ourschool community with healthy, delicious and well-pricedmeals, keeping the topic of good nutrition high on the agenda.

Fun fact

This weeks fun fact is inspired by Fathers Day.

The longest beard in the world belonged to Hans Langsethof Norway, which was measured at 533cm in 1927. That’samazing. We love forward to seeing some beard-inspiredpictures this week from our talented artists.

Students perform at Noosa CouncilCitizenship Ceremony

On Tuesday 22 August, approx. 30 students from the singinggroup performed at Noosa Council’s Australian CitizenshipCeremony. With gratitude, I write to thank all those involved.

It was our pleasure to welcome Acting Principal Edgar to theceremony and it was absolutely wonderful to welcome back MrBeaufoy and his music students to the stage at The J.

An added bonus, and demonstrative of the dedication of theTSS staff, was Mr Boland making himself available to drive themini-bus that transported the children to and from the venue.

When the students perform at our ceremonies, they do soundchecks, work with a professional sound technician and utilisethe Green Room, complete with refreshments, just like anyother artist that performs at The J. And, most importantly, theyhave a heap of fun. Their impeccable behaviour and excellentperformances make them wonderful ambassadors for TewantinState School and we are very grateful to all those involved inbringing the children to the stage. The warmth, enthusiasm andgreat vibe from these young performers is a valued contributionto our Australian Citizenship Ceremonies and we very muchlook forward seeing the students again in the future.

With thanks

Curriculum CornerTewantin’s participation in the Noosaand Hinterland Maths Cluster, led byRob Proffitt-White, not only focuses onproviding professional development forteachers on what to teach and how toteach it also focuses on the need to forour students to develop a positivedisposition towards maths and ways inwhich we can achieve this. Bothteachers and parents can have apositive influence on a student’s

The following are some tips for helping your children enjoymaths. There are many things we can be saying and doingto improve our children’s disposition towards mathematics andour influence as primary caregivers should never beunderestimated. These suggestions are taken from Jo Boaler,Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, CEO ofYouCubed and a renowned advocate for making mathematicsaccessible and enjoyable for everyone:

The following is a maths game for you to try with your child, notonly will it have the benefit of making maths enjoyable it will alsohelp develop their number facts.

CONGRATULATIONS to our senior Girls FOOTBALL Team, this year’s Sunshine Coast Champions who participated in lastFriday’s South East Qld U12 FOOTBALL Championships!! The

• Encourage children to play maths games and puzzles

• Always be encouraging and never tell kids they arewrong when they are working on maths problems.Instead find the logic in their thinking – there is alwayssome logic to what they say. For example if yourchild multiplies 3 by 4 and gets 7, say – Oh I seewhat you are thinking, you are just using what youknow about addition to add 3 and 4, when wemultiply we have 4 groups of 3 …

• Never associate maths with speed. It is not importantto work quickly, and we know that forcing kids towork quickly on maths is the best way to start mathsanxiety for children, especially girls.

• Never share with your children the idea that you werebad at maths at school or you dislike it – especially ifyou are a mother. Researchers found that as soon asmothers shared that idea with their daughters, theirdaughter’s achievement went down

• Students draw a 3x3 grid on their white board.

• Above each column and beside each row, write anumber between 3 and 18.

• Explain that:- The dice will be rolled nine times- each number rolled will be recorded in the grid- The purpose of the game is to make rows andcolumns add to the numbers selected at the start ofthe game

• After all numbers have been added to the grid, addeach row and column

• If the sum adds to the number pre-selected at thestart of the game, one point is scored (six points isthe maximum score)

• If you are playing with your child compare scores todecide a champion for the round.

Road safety

Please ensure you walk safely to school and use our schoolcrossings to safely cross the road. We have positioned lollypopstaff at crossings during peak times for safety and greatlyappreciate when adults model the correct use of crossings infront of our students.

School Parking

Tewantin State School is in the enviable position of havingparking available along all four school boundaries. While at peaktimes it is recognised that the school parking is understandablywell utilised, it is not permissible for non-staff vehicles toenter the school grounds (including staff carparks) as thisendangers the safety of students and school staff.

Thank you for abiding by this school safety requirement.

A reminder that dogs are not permitted on EducationQueensland grounds at any time. This is for the safety of ourstaff, students and visitors to the school, and also for hygienereasons. Please do not bring dogs into our school.

Messages to students

There are times when you may need important messagespassed on to students and/or their teacher. Please be awarethat to avoid interrupting valuable class learning time thesemessages are relayed by our office staff during morning andafternoon break times. To assist us with this, please contactthe school office as early as possible during the day. This isparticularly important on school parade days when it is moredifficult to contact students and their teachers during and afterparade time.

Tip - If you have a student or students that may need remindingof things such as how they are travelling home that day, withwhom, etc, a great idea is to write it in a notebook which can bekept in their school bag for easy reference by the student and/or their teacher.

MEDIA PERMISSIONS

Education Queensland enrolment paperwork that youcompleted when your children started school included a mediapermission form. The information from this form is recordedby the school, this enables us to check which students havepermission for their photo and/or school work to be publishedin our school newsletter and on our school website, andoccasionally local newspapers and/or TV. If you do NOT wantyour child to have media permission please inform the schoolso we can ensure our records are accurate. Thank you.

Button battery safety – important notice

With the current influx of fidget spinners (some of which havebutton batteries) it is timely to create awareness among the

6

Page 7: Acting Principal’s Report - Tewantin State School · PDF fileActing Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers, ... LONG JUMP Jed Danton LONG JUMP Jai Stuart SHOT PUT 11 year Boys

Tewantin school community - staff/parents/carers regardingthe potential risks associated with button batteries and to bevigilant.

Coin lithium button batteries can cause severe injuries whenswallowed. These batteries can get stuck in the throat andcause severe burns. Small children often have easy access tothese devices, and many parents do not know there is a risk.

In Australia an estimated 20 children per week are attending anemergency department with an injury related to swallowing orinserting (into nose or ears) a button battery, with children underfive years of age at greatest risk. This information has beentaken from Kidsafe - Child Accident Prevention Foundation ofAustralia.

The Battery Controlled is a partnership to raise awarenessabout the severity of this issue and share information withparents, caregivers, and the medical community. Launchedin Australia by Energizer, Kidsafe, and the ACCC (AustralianCompetition and Consumer Commission), this effort iscommitted to helping parents prevent children from swallowingcoin-sized button batteries.

How schools can get involved:

Be alert to the hazards and risk associated with button batteriesin your schools and education centres. Further, be alert toproducts that you may sell at school functions, discos, andfetes which may present a risk in relation to button batteries.

Headlice

Head lice are common in children and are the most adaptableof creatures. They have survived living solely on human headsfor 10,000 years.

Some of the reasons they have survived for as long as theyhave are:

The six legs of a louse end in a claw, allowing them togrip the hair; They detect vibration and can hide;Head lice can ‘hold’ their breath for 20 mins – looking likethey are dead; The eggs are attached to the hair with a ‘glue’ likesubstance.

The good news is that we know where they live and we knowhow to find them.

If you follow these steps regularly, the control of head lice in ourcommunity will be greatly improved.

Step 1 Comb hair conditioner onto dry, brushed(detangled) hair;Step 2 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a papertowel or tissue;Step 3 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice andeggs;Step 4 If lice or eggs are found, the child should betreated as soon as possible.

A Queensland Government fact sheet on headlice (includingtreatment options) is available here:-

http://conditions.health.qld.gov.au/HealthCondition/condition/14/165/351/Head-Lice

Here at Tewantin we love to celebrate the achievements ofboth our past and present students. If you know of a studentwho has an achievement to be celebrated, please e-mail thedetails to [email protected] please include anyrelevant photographs and a contact number in your e-mail.We celebrate all kinds of achievements from sporting andcommunity to academic and arts awards. Also if you find anystudents featured in the media for their achievements we wouldalso love that brought to our attention.

Hats

From time to time students will get their hats a tad grubby, justlike any other school uniform item. At other times, some of ourstudents take to their hats with marker pens, defacing themterribly. Please be aware that students must wear their uniformappropriately. (A name discreetly written on the insode of thehat is of course appropriate). Your support is appreciated.
