Why this qualification?The purpose of the Advanced Certificate inFoundation Phase Teaching is a formalqualification-based Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment (CPD) learning programme toprovide teachers with opportunities tostrengthen or supplement their existingteaching roles, or to develop a newspecialisation and interests. In general, thisqualification aims to improve teachers’capacity to engage with, support and assistother educators, support staff, learners andparents in foundation phase at classroom andschool level, but also in the wider community.

The AdvCert (Foundation Phase Teaching) isprimarily vocationally oriented. It aims toprovide students with a sound knowledgebase for teaching learners from Grade R to 3.Students will adopt the ability to apply theirknowledge and skills to classroom teaching,while equipping them to undertake moreintensive learning in Foundation Phaseteaching. This qualification has a strongprofessional focus and could prepare teacherswho have a prior professional teachingqualification, but who did not specialise inFoundation Phase teaching. This qualificationis developed to equip teachers who want tostrengthen their specialisation in FoundationPhase Teaching or want to progress from aNQF level 5 to a NQF Level 6 qualification inFoundation Phase Teaching. Alternatively, thisAdvCert may also be utilised as an entryqualification for professional qualifiedFoundation Phase teachers.

Entry requirements� Students applying for admission to the

AdvCert (Foundation Phase Teaching) willbe assessed to determine whether their

levels of competence in their HomeLanguage of choice, as well as in English astheir First Additional Language are at leastat a National Senior Certificate level orequivalent.

� Students who are not competent in thecognitive and academic language skills forthinking and learning in their HomeLanguage of choice, and in English as theirFirst Additional Language, will be given anopportunity to enrol for additional modules,at Level 5, in their Home Language ofChoice and in English as First AdditionalLanguage. Once they successfullycompleted these two modules, they will beadmitted to the AdvCert (Foundation PhaseTeaching) Home Language and English asFirst Additional Language modules.

� All AdvCert (Foundation Phase Teaching)students are expected to be ICT competent(for example: Word, Excel, Power Point,using the Internet for study purposes,communication via e-mail).

DurationDuration of the Certificate is 2 years.

When can I register?There are two study cycles per academicyear.Study Cycle 1

Register between 1 March and 31 August(30 September for 2020).Examination in May/June

Computer literacy workshopStudents who are not computer literate allhave to attend an online computer literacyworkshop that will be made available shortlyafter registration via whatsapp, e-mail andthe link will also be available on Edutel’s LMSplatform (Moodle).

Take note that it is expected of all students tohave access to a computer with sound or alaptop and data or Wi-Fi access.

How do you study at Edutel HigherEducation?The Advanced Certificate in FoundationPhase Teaching is a part-time modularqualification that makes use of a blendedmode of learning. This means thatstudents will register for a qualificationas a distance student and will work athome on the learning material provided,but have at their disposal several ways inwhich to supplement their studies.Edutel will provide student supportthrough the following distributionchannels during the teaching andlearning process; postal services, e-mail,Online Zoom session, Moodle learningplatform, SMS's, WhatsApp, Facebook,Twitter, telephone, fax and DVD's.

Learning assumed to be in place� All AdvCert (Foundation Phase Teaching)

students are expected to be ICTcompetent (for example: Word, Excel,PowerPoint, using the internet for studypurposes, communication via e-mail).

� This qualification has the specific aim toimprove teachers' knowledge andcompetencies towards a new learningarea or phase thereby strengtheningtheir Foundation Phase specialisation.Therefore, the Advanced Certificate inTeaching will not only upgrade thequalification of those teachers who arecurrently employed without adequatetraining, but also offer specialisteducation to those teachers who need tostrengthen their specialisationknowledge base. The qualification alsoaims to provide retraining to teacherswho wish to change their career path,thus widening the pool of teachers whocan teach a subject.

� It is assumed that the learner iscompetent in the Home Language ofchoice and English at Senior CertificateLevel.

What if I have certain knowledge andexperience already?Edutel Higher Education is a strongsupporter of Recognition of Prior Learning.For this reason, students may apply for RPL.

What is RPL?RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)In line with the South AfricanQualifications Authority institutionalguidelines and policies, Recognition ofPrior Learning may take place and thecandidate may be awarded a maximumof 50% of the credits for theprogramme, based on appropriateassessment of evidence of competencerelated to the programme and moduleoutcomes.

RPL, as defined nationally by SAQA,applies to informal or non-formallearning only. Learning resulting fromformal routes will normally berecognised via Credit Accumulation andTransfer (CAT), but in cases where CAT isfound not to be applicable, the RPL routemay be explored. Edutel HigherEducation in all its RPL and CATprocesses ensures that the followingprinciples as formulated by the CHE,always underpin its assessment policiesand practices.

A formal RPL will be followed in linewith Edutel Higher Education's RPLpolicy.RPL will be used to grant access to, orexemption from modules that contributetowards the AdvCert (Foundation PhaseTeaching).

Computer Skills (10 CPTD points)If you are not computer literate, you will beable to indicate on the application form thatyou want to attend the online ICT workshop

Completing the ICT training can earn you10 CPTD points as Edutel is a SACE endorsedprovider. You must have access to acomputer with sound or a laptop anddata/Wi-Fi in order to complete your ICTtraining and ACT programme with Edutel.

Work-Integrated Learning (WIL)You are required to select a school in the areayou live where Foundation Phase is beingtaught. The school must have an appointedHOD for ECD/Foundation Phase and an EMISnumber. This will be the suggested schoolwhere you will complete your WIL. Apartfrom selecting a qualifying school, the schoolmust also make a mentor teacher available tomentor and assess you during WIL.Should you register between 1 Septemberand 28 February, you will be required to doyour WIL either in July, August, September orOctober. Should you register between1 March and 31 August, you will be requiredto do your WIL in February, March or May.

Note: All students must start with the fourweeks of teaching practice (WIL) in thesecond semester of their SECOND study

year.

Edutel Higher Education reserves the right toapprove or not to approve of the selectedschool. Should Edutel Higher Education notapprove of the school, the student will berequired to select another school and havethe appendices completed again and

submitted to Edutel HigherEducation.

Rules of combinationAll modules are compulsory EXCEPT for theHome Language modules. English will betaught as First Additional Language.

The programme is designed and structuredin such a way that it forms an integratedwhole despite that it is made up of differentmodules. Provision is made for logicalprogression from one module to the nextand the interrelatedness of the differentmodules is emphasised continuously bycross referencing to other modules as theprogramme unfolds. The interrelatedness ofthe specialisation modules, fundamentalmodules and the integrated competence(Teaching Practice) is emphasises in allmodules. Complying with the requirementsfor School-based Teaching Practice duringthe study is a requirement to complete thequalification.

Academic supportEdutel Higher Education will providestudent support through the followingdistribution channels during the teachingand learning process:� Postal services� e-mail� Moodle learning platform� Online Zoom meetings� SMS’s� WhatsApp� Facebook� Twitter� Telephone� Fax� Supporting DVD’s.

Contact sessionsAt the onset of the programme, an onlinerecording of the orientation contact sessionwill be send to you. During this onlineorientation session a training sessionintroducing students to Moodle and Zoommeetings will be conducted. Alladministrative matters, such as submittingassignments, registering and writingexaminations, will be explained during thiscontact session.

In addition to the online orientation session,contact sessions will be held once asemester, via online zoom sessions, arrangedat convenient times. The zoom sessions wasintroduced to help address the challengesbrought about by the Covid pandemic.These sessions will also be available todownload via the Moodle platform aftertransmissions, should you miss the session.During these sessions the module contentwill be facilitated, and students can obtainclarification and assistance with studyqueries. Each contact session is facilitated

by an experienced person with the necessaryacademic qualifications and facilitation skills. Thedetails of the contact sessions are provided in theAdministrative Booklet.

Media Centre ServicesThe media centre covers a wide variety ofresources for your use.� Access to additional reading material, such as

reference books and journals which are relevantto student's studies.

� Lists of recommended books which areavailable at other institutions.

� A list of internet websites that are relevant tostudents' studies and which can be accessed viathe web.

� Access to the services of EBSCOhost (electroniclibrary).

� Printing and copying services at a cost.� Internet access.� Downloaded online Zoom meetings for use

after the presentation date.� The services of a person to assist in the search

for information.

Health and WellnessEdutel Higher Eduation takes the healthand wellness of its staff and studentsseriously and therefore has a well-developedpolicy in place, managed by aHealth and Wellness Committee.

Cancellation PolicyCancellations of course fees will not be acceptedonce you are accepted and registered as a student.

Formative assessmentIn the assessment strategy knowledge, skillsand attitudes will be assessed through avariety of options: case studies, problem-solving assignments, practice in simulatedand in situational contexts, portfolios ofresources and materials, projects, homegiven examinations.

Continuous Integrated AssessmentTo assess the achievement of the outcomesof this programme an integrated, practice-based approach of continuous assessmentwill be followed.Submission of one formal assignment permodule is compulsory.

Formative assessment is a range of formaland informal assessment proceduresemployed by lecturers during the learningprocess to modify teaching and learningactivities to improve student attainment. Ittypically involves qualitative feedback(rather than scores) for both student andlecturer that focus on the details of contentand performance.

Summative assessment (or summativeevaluation) refers to the assessment ofstudents, and summarises theirdevelopment at a particular time.

where students spend four consecutiveweeks of supervised teaching practice atschools during the second semester of theirsecond year of study. A final reflectiveportfolio of evidence must be submitted atthe end of the study year as part of the finalsummative assessment of the programme.The final marks of the student will becomposed of three assessments: MentorTeachers assessment, assessment during aformal visit by an Edutel staff member andthe Portfolio of Evidence.

The WIL module requires the student tocompile a reflective portfolio of evidencethat demonstrate their ability to apply andintegrate content knowledge from all thedifferent modules in the practical teachingsituations. Students develop reflectivecompetence by the keeping of reflectivejournals. The WIL module provides thestudents with opportunities to masterknowledge and skills required to improvetheir classroom practice by creatingopportunities for:� `Observation of the mentor-teacher's

classroom practice� Co-teaching with the mentor-teacher in

a supervisory role� Independent teaching with the mentor-

teacher assuming an assessment role� Independent teaching with EDUTEL staff

members as assessors.

Students not teaching in the FoundationPhase or at a primary school:During the first semester of study, EDUTELwill identify appropriate, functional primaryschools in the area where the registeredstudents live. The coordinator of the WILmodules at EDUTEL will select the most

Seven (excluding the WIL Portfolio ofEvidence) modules will be assessed througha formal examination in each module at theend of each year.

The final promotion mark for eachsubject/module is calculated in thefollowing manner:1. Assignments contribute 30% towards

the promotion mark of each module.2. Examinations in each of the modules

contribute 70% towards the promotionmark in each module.

3. The Professional Portfolio should besubmitted at the end of the second studyyear and will be assessed using thematrix provided to the students on theDVD that they receive as part of theirstudy material.

4. The final promotion mark will becalculated by the separate marksobtained at the end of each semester.

5. Students must achieve a sub-minimumof 40% in an examination to pass amodule.

6. The overall pass mark for each module is50%.

7. To be awarded the qualification,students must obtain 50 % in eachmodule and 50% for the ProfessionalPortfolio

appropriate functioning school closest to eachstudent and inform the student of the name ofthe selected school. The student will receive a formwhich includes the EMIS number of the schools,the names and contact details of the schoolprincipals.

ModerationModeration of assessment supports high qualityassessment practices which are an importantelement of Edutel's quality assurance framework.In the case of summative examinations, studentshave the right to sight their examination scripts,but are not entitled to either the original or a copy.

8 Student Financial Aid.Students can arrange to pay theircourse fees by bank debit order, cashmonthly, cash in advance, credit card,in some cases, by salary stop order(Fundi). Students can apply for studyloans at various financial institutions.

Attending instruction learningIt is expected of who are scheduled to attend sessions to ensure that theystudents contactarrive at the designated venue on time, bringing along all relevant materials and associatedequipment to ensure that they are well prepared to attend and benefit from the instructionalinterventions.

Study schedulesStudents studymust ensure that they have in their possession a copy of their schedule andthat they strictly adhere to the locations, times and dates as set out in these schedules, unlessotherwise informed in writing by Edutel or any of its authorised constituents of changes madeto such schedules. Conduct towards co- and facilitatorsstudentsStudents studentare expected to respect the dignity of their co- s and facilitators. Theirbehaviour towards other and facilitators should always be civilised, courteous andstudentssupportive. Foul language, disrespect and a discriminatory attitude towards any other studentor facilitator will not be tolerated and will be dealt with in the strictest possible manner.

Dress codeStudents are expected to ensure that their personal appearance and dress code conform toacceptable norms, are not offensive and do not detract from the professional image that isprojected by Edutel, co- and employer organisations.students

Employer relationsStudents Workplace Integrated Learningshould recognise that when attending , that suchattendance is treated under the same employment terms and conditions of work as applied byemployers.

Workplace learning and assessmentsStudents are expected to apply themselves as diligent, motivated and productive employeeswhile performing their duties . They should understand that the workplaces areduring WILextensions of the instructional learning components and that they must utilise everyopportunity at the workplace to apply their learning and, in so doing, develop their knowledge,skills and experience. should actively and positively participate in all assessments andStudentsensure that all assessments are conducted in a fair and just manner.

Assessments and proof of competenceStudents are expected to provide proof of competence through recognised assessment andmoderation procedures and instruments. It is expected of to fully participate in thesestudentsactivities and to ensure that all evidence submitted as proof of their competence is a true andaccurate reflection of their own ability and skills, and that no part of any evidence can beclaimed to present the efforts of another person in whatever capacity or association with thestudent. Students are expected to demonstrate extreme honesty and integrity in these matters.

Use of facilitiesStudents are expected to use all physical facilities, including furniture and equipment, withutmost care and respect and to refrain from any wilful acts of vandalism, abuse or negligence.

Appeals procedureStudents who are not satisfied with the manner in which their learning efforts have beenassessed are required to utilise Edutel's appeals procedure and to refrain from trying to resolvesuch matters in other ways.

CommunicationStudents ,are encouraged to communicate with Edutel and its employees using recognisedchannels of communication established for such purposes. These channels include personalcontact, written (fascimile, letter or e-mail) or telephonic communication. areStudentsexpected to resolve any issues with Edutel directly and not to use intermediaries to addresssuch matters.

GRIEVANCE POLICY FOR EDUTEL

PurposeThe purpose of this policy is to formulate the values and philosophy of Edutel when dealingwith grievances of its students.

ObjectivesThe objectives of this policy is to:� establish a fair process for to air their grievances;students� provide a mechanism for dealing with grievances in order to protectstudent student

morale and motivation;� maintain sound and effective working relationships in the organisation.

ScopeThis policy is applicable to all categories of attending training interventions offered bystudentsEdutel.

Policy statementsAll may lodge grievances without any fear of victimisation or prejudice.studentsAll grievances are to be handled with the utmost discretion and with the dignity and privacy ofstudents in mind.Grievances shall be settled as speedily and effectively as possible.This policy deals with individuals' grievances and grievances in small groups.The Human Resources Manager or his/her delegate acts as advisor to both parties in thegrievance investigation.The policy does not replace normal communication between and Edutel and shouldstudentstherefore be utilised in cases where informal communication has been exhausted or is clearlyinappropriate.Students studenthave the right to be assisted by a co- of their choice at any stage of theprocedure.The grievance must be raised within five working days of the occurrence that gave rise to it,failing which, unless special circumstances exist, the will have no recourse to thestudentgrievance procedure.

RevisionThis policy to be revised after two years from date of acceptance.

ResponsibilityThis policy is the responsibility of the Training Quality Assurance Committee of Edutel.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE FOR EDUTEL

Phase 1The student must orally communicate the grievance directly to the Edutel ProgrammeCoordinator. The student must indicate that he/she is lodging a formal grievance.The Programme Coordinator must:� Listen in private to the student's problem.� Encourage the student to speak openly about his/her grievance.� Give the student the assurance that he/she will not be victimized.� As relevant questions to obtain all facts relating to the grievance.� Respect the need for confidentiality.The Programme Coordinator must endeavour to resolve the problem as soon as possible andfurnish the student with an answer within 3 working days of the grievance being raised.

Phase 2If a student is not satisfied with the result of the above:

� An official grievance form must be completed and handed to the Edutel ProgrammeCoordinator. This must take place within 3 working days of the Programme Coordinatorinforming the student of the outcome of phase 1.

� Upon receipt of the grievance form, the Programme Coordinator, after consultation withthe student must communicate the outcome to the student in writing within 3 workingdays for the purpose of solving the grievance.

� If the student's grievance is not settled to his/her satisfaction, the parties will proceed tothe next phase.

Phase 3The grievance form is handed to the Human Resource Manager who, within 3 days of receivingthe form, arranges a grievance investigation, which will involve the following people.

� The student.� Witnesses (if any)� Programme Coordinator� Human Resource Manager.

� During the investigation an effort must be made to settle the grievance and theProgramme Coordinator concerned must comment in writing regarding his/her findingwithin 3 working days of the grievance investigation having been completed.

If the student is not satisfied with the findings of the grievance investigation, the partiesproceed to Phase 4.
