A TO TA L APPROACH

The ACT approach arose out of extensive research into how modern students’ learn withthe aim of developing appropriate digital-age teaching approaches (pedagogies). Inaddition to this, the goal was to develop an easy-to-apply, cohesive arrangement ofpedagogies. The ACT model represents the first Taxonomy Of Teaching And Learning(TOTAL) approach for the 21st century that maximizes technologies affordances, resonates with modern students and develops key 21st century skills. What Bloom’s taxonomy did for thinking skills in the classroom, the ACT taxonomy isdoing for digital-age pedagogies in the classroom.

" GEN I U S "

The Activated Classroom Teaching (ACT) approach has been described as “genius”, “inspiring”, “a first”, “a mind shift of epic proportions”, and “like a good book you can't put down". In addition to being used by leading schools around the world, the ACT approach has been featured in the Huffington Post, LifeHacker, CNBC, World Economic Forum, Carte Blanche, as well as academic publications. The reason for this unprecedented response is because it represents the first research-supported, easy-to- apply, arrangement of digital-age pedagogies.

P EDAGOGY T H EN T E CHNO LOGY

“For the first time, I see a real way that education and technology can be linked successfully” (Claire). The aim of the ACT approach is to let teachers see technology-based teaching in a whole new way. The aim is not to prescribe what technologies are used in the classroom, but rather to equip teachers with a pedagogic lens through which they view these technologies. Seeing pedagogies before technologies fundamentally changes how we approach teaching in the digital age.

“It is not app driven but pedagogically driven…as a teacher you can pick and choose those apps that you like and you feel will advance your subject knowledge or skills.” (Stephen Ireland, Deputy Headmaster, Thomas More College)

Research by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman from Stanford has proven that active learningapproaches can “double the amount a student learns”. This has been confirmed byongoing research by the ACT Academy which has shown that active pedagogies, such asthe pedagogy of Creation, more than double recall rates.

TH E AC T APPROACH

The Activated Classroom Teaching (ACT) approach is based on the ACT model, a taxonomy of digital-age pedagogies. The pedagogies employ active learning teaching approaches that maximise engagement, learning and performance. In addition to encouraging active learning with technology, the pedagogies are designed to encourage the development of key 21st century skills, such as creativity, problem solving, curiosity, critical thinking, etc.
