Background { Maker:

Many stakeholders (consumers,

experts, NGOs, GOs, businesses) are

motivated to help solving Sustainability

problems but they face many hurdles.

Creative new approaches for bottom up

innovation are emerging such as

• Open Innovation,

• Crowd Funding,

• DIY,

• Social Innovation,

• Socio-Preneurism.

These are combined in the

Sustainability Maker project to lead to

radical change.

Page 10: ‘Crowd’ based Design and Innovation for Sustainability · Innovation Foundation, India, expert in collaborative and bottom up innovation and implementation of solutions, among

Open Innovation { Definition (Chesbrough 2006):

‘The use of purposive inflows and

outflows of knowledge to accelerate

internal innovation, and expand the

markets for external use of innovation,

respectively.'

Normally by companies to improve

business success.

We use it really open involving creatives

around the world to create sustainable

solutions and radical change, even

without companies.

We might be able to work around the

‚wickedness‘ of ‚wicked problems‘.

If we take real problems and real needs –

rather than the products fulfilling the needs

– as a starting point, the degrees of

freedom to design need fulfillment systems

with considerable sustainability

improvements are much higher.

If we co-design, the likelihood of creating

solutions that actually work is increased.

Critical Success Factors 1 Some creatives / designers did not yet buy into the idea of Open

Source:

“People will steal my ideas”. “I want to be paid for my designs”.

We have to communicate better the benefits of collaboration and

sharing:

1. There are tangible rewards (payment, contacts, publicity,

potential job opportunity, networking with interesting international

experts) they have to be made more explicit.

2. Innonatives uses the Creative Common License ‘Creative

Commons Public License (CCPL): Attribution-NonCommercial-

Sharelike 4.0 international’, which protects IPR of the original

designer. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-

sa/4.0/legalcode

3. Users can go for crowd-funding their ideas and thus can

generate budgets for implementation

4. Users can find collaborators and partners to help them

implement their projects.

Critical Success Factors 2

Creating the Feeling of Being a Community

The platform needs to enable better collaboration and socializing.

Encourage more interaction between users. Add a discussion

forum. Make it more active with calls to action and blogs. The

Sustainability Maker / innonatives Conventions as physical

meetings of the Crowd. Workshops in different parts of the world.

Combining online and offline activities (= open research question).

Engaging more users to participate and more actors/organizations

starting challenges

We are doing intense (social) media campaigns and networking in

special interest groups, universities, DeSIS, LeNS, O2

international, etc. But it is a lot of work and takes time to increase

the community and to involve interesting challenge owners.

Suggestions on how to improve that are very welcome ! Positive is

that we have very active users (against the 90-9-1 rule).

Critical Success Factors 4 Transparency and Trust

How does Sustainability Evaluation take place? We have

established an evaluation process including tools to use and

suggest tools also for innonatives users to be used (educational

element).

All IPR rights and duties and evaluation processes are described

in the ‘how to use’ and ‘terms & conditions’ section, but no one

reads this. It has to be made more explicit: A crowd-sourced video

clip is coming up.

Crowd-Funding: How to create EU wide if not international

system?

Legislation is still different in each country. For the moment we will

only do reward based and donation based CF. We will only

connect funders with project owners, not deal with the actual

financial service.

Critical Success Factors 5

Open research questions, e.g.:

1. What is the quality and radicalness of solutions you can expect

from the Crowd and an online open innovation system? ‘The

Stupidity of the Crowd’ ???

2. What kind of problems can the Crowd tackle, what results

achieve: social innovation, technological innovation, products,

services, systems, communication, education ?

3. How to involve people/ communities that have no access to

internet and are not able to read/ speak English? So far we

have teamed up with universities / NGOs to work as

facilitators.

4. The business model for the innonatives platform after the EU

funding ends. Currently under development.
