OF A LEARNING SPACE

Turning the MacFarland Library Building into an integrated learning hub for students was a challenging and inspiring project for all parties involved. In order to support the students in their learning, we wanted to create an acoustic environment in the open-plan learning hub that eliminated all excessive noise. The use of Knauf Stratopanel acoustic ceiling lining contributed to achieving

this goal, as it delivered the amount of sound absorption required in the large open area of the Academic Centre.

The $3.3 million project has won numerous prestigious awards from the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects and the Council of Educational Facilities Planners International.

NORTHERN BEACHES CHRISTIAN SCHOOL - AUSTRALIA The open learning space at Northern Beaches Christian School caters to as many as 180 students at any one time. In creating it, the designers knew acoustics would be vital – and found a solution in Stratopanel.

Project architect Catherine Downie, of BVN Donovan Hill Architecture, says she was attracted to Knauf’s Stratopanel with alternating perforation from an aesthetic perspective – but adds that after initial research the product “ticked all the boxes” in terms of performance requirements.

“When we were in the process of specifying a ceiling product I found Knauf to be incredibly helpful,” she says. “They were happy to discuss all the parameters the ceiling had to meet, and they were able to provide the hard data we needed.”

Anne Knock, Northern Beaches Christian School’s director of development, adds that the effective acoustic treatment in The Zone has enabled the school to centralise teaching and learning in a fun and motivating environment.

MELTON LIBRARY - AUSTRALIA COMPLEX 5 STAR GREEN STAR RATED BUILDING EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

In collaboration with fjmt architects, Melton local council in Victoria embarked on a $20 million design and build project that was ambitious from the outset; to create a 5 Star Green Star Design and As-Built Rated building (against the Green Building Council of Australia Public Building PILOT tool) that would serve the community.

With their goal to spread their Green Star points across the whole project the team at fjmt were very particular in the specification of products to be used. Knauf Designpanel perforated plasterboard sheets were used in the ceilings.

“One of the important factors when choosing products that boast environmental credentials is that they are 3rd party accredited. The Knauf Designpanel product used in the ceilings, in addition to being 3rd party certified GreenRate Level A, is made up of 90% recycled content, giving it the highest environmental credentials,” says Lance White, Senior Associate, fjmt. “This was a significant deciding factor for us.

MELBOURNE SCHOOL OF DESIGN BUILDING AN INSPIRED DESIGN TO INSPIRE GREAT FUTURE DESIGN

The MSD building for the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at Melbourne University is a culmination of inspired design, careful consideration of materials and quality craftsmanship. The result is a finished building that provides a seat of learning that commences the teaching the moment students walk into the building.

Managing the acoustics was a major design consideration. The designers needed a material that would perform acoustically across a number of areas, all of which have a variety of hard,

sound-reflective surfaces. Stratopanel was chosen not just for its acoustic performance, but also because aesthetically it tied in with the overall design language used throughout.

“Stratopanel has a variety of perforation sizes in a layout that we found to be thematically similar to the design motifs we developed for the external perforated zinc solar screens, as well as the acoustic perforation patterns developed for the outer surface of the suspended studio within the main studio hall,” says Stephen Georgalas, John Wardle Architects.

AQUALINK AQUATIC CENTREWhen Whitehorse Council committed to the redevelopment of the Aqualink Aquatic Centre, a well-used and well-loved local community facility, Williams Ross Architects, specialists in the area of aquatic facilities design for over 25 years, created a design that was very much in tune with the concept of connection and community.

In consultation with Knauf, Gray Barton, Director, William Ross Architects and his team specified Heradesign panels in the main pool area, the warm water therapy pool, the café and the social

areas. “The Heradesign panels come in a range of colours and we chose a palette of natural blue and white, which work well in a water facility,” says Gray.

The main considerations for the materials used in the pool areas were noise reduction and ability to withstand humidity and chemical use. Heradesign’s product attributes and ease of installation not only delivered the right acoustics and great aesthetics, but also assisted greatly in reducing costs and bringing the project in line with the budget.

AIR BUBBLES IN GYPSUM BOARD

In the dolphinarium in Nuremberg, the acoustic ceiling employs the motif of air bubbles in sea water. The formation of the various circles were de-signed and performed with CNC moulding to ensure exact circular shapes.

DAHLSKE VID SCHOOL - NORWAY

INTEGRATING THE CEILING SURFACE IN THE OVERALL INTERIOR DESIGN OPENS UP A LARGE AREA FOR DECORATION.

The architects and designers at Dahlske Vid School did just that, creating colour schemes and patterns in the ceiling to match the wall decorations and façade design of the building. This is made possible thanks to the excellent property of acoustic plasterboard to be painted over and over again on-site without any loss of their acoustic performance. Being installed in a visible T-grid, the Plaza solution offers the possibility to use the T-grid as an interactive part of the ceiling design.
