Sealing vinyl sheet flooringto drainage channels andgulliesVinyl sheet is a common flooring finish in many ofthe areas where stainless steel drainage channelsand gullies are required. Previously the standardmethod of jointing the two was by a mechanicalclamping system.

Although functional, this mechanical clampingmechanism can be cumbersome to fit and increasethe potential areas for bacterial growth.

In order to overcome the frequently encounteredproblems of achieving watertight and bacteria freeseals, ACO have developed the ACO BuildingDrainage Vinyl Seal a unique solution that willenable quick, easy and economical installation. ACOBuilding Drainage Vinyl Seal® provides a completelywatertight and bacteria free seal. It can be also easilyremoved and re-sealed when the vinyl is replaced orrefurbished without the need to disturb the channelor supporting detail in any way.

This method of sealing requires no additional toolsor skills than those required for the professionalfitting of vinyl sheet flooring, making theinstallation quick, easy and economical.

The seal is significantly more cost effective than thetraditional mechanical type and is designed to fitACO Building Drainage stainless steel drainagechannels.

Cut the ACO Building Drainage Vinyl Seal® rigidPVC co-extrusion to the required lengths to fitexactly round all edges of the assembled channel –do not forget to allow for the mitred ends. Cut andnotch the extrusion to form internal and externalmitres as required.

Press the rigid extrusion into the recess at the edgeof the channel ensuring it is pushed fully home.Peel back the fabric tape protecting the channeledge in preparation for fitting the flexible PVC seal.

Press the flexible PVC seal into position betweenthe stainless steel channel and rigid PVC extrusionmaking sure that the concave section of the sealfaces TOWARDS the channel edge and that thegroove in the flexible seal engages with the notchon the rigid extrusion (it may help to lubricate theflexible seal when inserting using a soapy solution). For an even finish roll the flexible seal in to positionusing a small decorators roller.

43

ACO VINYL SEAL®

Installation

Ensure the assembled ridged and flexible VinylSeal® sits square and horizontal in the channel

detail Install the channel into the ground ensuringthat the flooring screed is flush to the top edge ofthe rigid PVC extrusion. Protect the channel andseal assembly from splashes of concrete/screed.

Depending upon the installation, additionalsuitable fixings may be required to secure the rigidextrusion to the floor substrate. If this should berequired, separately drill and countersink the rigidextrusion making sure that all fixings are finishedflush with the top of the extrusion.

Grout any voids at connecting rigid PVC joins atmitred corners, straight joints or fixings to ensure a continuous supported floor finish.

Prior to laying the vinyl sheet flooring, peel theprotective film from the rigid extrusion (a knifemay be required to cut the film adjacent to theflexible seal) and ensure all surfaces are clean and dry.

When preparing the vinyl sheet material and floorsurface, apply a compatible adhesive also to thetop surface of the rigid PVC extrusion for example,Altrofix 19 two-part water resistant eurethaneadhesive taking care not to apply adhesive to theflexible seal. This is to ensure the vinyl sheet floor is reliably anchored over its full area.

Cut/lay the sheet flooring against the flexible sealedge and prepare the welded joint between theflexible seal and vinyl sheet flooring as normal byscoring the sheet/seal joint to approximately halfthe depth of the sheet flooring thickness.

Either in-colour or black welding filler rod may beused to weld the joint. Remove surplus weldmaterial from the joint using a spatula when thewelded joint has cooled.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Although robust, all grades of stainless steel willstain and discolour due to surface deposits and, as such, can never be accepted as completelymaintenance free. In order to achieve maximumcorrosion resistance, the surface of the stainlesssteel must be kept clean. Provided the grade ofstainless steel and the surface finish are correctlyselected, and cleaning schedules carried out on aregular basis, excellent performance and longservice life are assured.

Factors AffectingMaintenanceSurface contamination and the formation ofdeposits must be prevented in order to maintain adurable and hygienic surface.

These deposits may be minute particles of iron orrust from other sources used on the building ofnew premises and not removed until after thestainless steel drainage products have beeninstalled. Wire brushes and wire wool must not beused to remove marks and cement spillages as thiswill only serve to introduce iron impurities to thematerial surface. Care must also be taken whenstoring, erecting or cutting carbon steel near tostainless steel.

Industrial and even naturally occurring atmosphericconditions can produce deposits which can beequally corrosive, e.g. salt deposits from marineconditions.

The working environment can offer moreaggressive conditions, for example the highhumidity found in swimming pools increases thespeed of discolouration and therefore requiresmaintenance on a more frequent basis.

Modern processes use many cleaners, sterilisers and bleaches for hygienic purposes. All theseproprietary solutions, when used in accordancewith makers instructions are safe, but if usedincorrectly (e.g.warm or concentrated) can causediscolouration and corrosion on the surface of anyquality of stainless steel.

Strong acid solutions are sometimes used to cleanmasonry and tiling of buildings but they shouldnever be permitted to come into contact withmetals, including stainless steel. If this shouldhappen the acid solution must be removedimmediately by copious applications of water.

Maintenance ProgrammeWith care taken during fabrication and installation, cleaning before handing over to the client shouldpresent no special problems, although moreattention may be required if the installation periodhas been prolonged.

Where surface contamination is suspected, immediate attention to cleaning after site fixing willencourage a trouble free product.

Food and beverage handling, pharmaceutical andchemical industry applications require extremelyhigh levels of cleanliness applicable to eachindustry.

Advice is often sought concerning the frequency of cleaning stainless steel and the answer is quitesimple: clean the metal when it is dirty in order torestore its original appearance. This may vary fromonce to four times a year for external applicationsor it may be once a day for an item in hygienic oraggressive situations.

Frequency and cost of cleaning is lower withstainless steel than with many other materials, andwill often outweigh the initial higher cost of thissuperior product.

Cleaning MethodsStainless steel is easy to clean. Washing with soapor a mild detergent and warm water followed by aclear water rinse is usually quite adequate for manyindustrial applications. An enhanced aestheticappearance will be achieved if the cleaned surfaceis finally wiped dry.

PrecautionsAcids should only be used for on-site cleaningwhen all other methods have been provedunsatisfactory. Rubber gloves should be used andcare taken to see that acid cleaners are not spiltover adjacent areas.

Special precautions are necessary with oxalic acid.Solvents should not be used in closed placeswithout adequate ventilation. Smoking must beavoided when using solvent. Manufacturer’sdirections should be followed.

ConclusionIf all the suggestions and actions in the table belowhave been attempted, stainless steel has the facilityto be mechanically cleaned by specialists on site. Please contact ACO Building Drainage for furtherassistance.

Stainless SteelFAMILIES

Stainless steel is the name given to a wide range ofsteels which have the characteristics of greatlyenhanced corrosion resistance over conventionalmild and low alloy steels.

The enhanced corrosion resistance of stainless steelessentially comes from the addition of at least 11%chromium, however most stainless steelscommonly used contain around 18% chromium.Other significant alloying elements include nickeland for superior corrosion resistant properties, molybdenum.

For ACO Building Drainage applications, theprincipal properties of stainless steel may besummarised as follows:

Durable and corrosion resistant in highlyaggressive environments.

 Hygienic, easily cleaned surfaces.

 Aesthetically attractive surface finish.

 Good forming and fabrication characteristics.

Excellent strength and resistance tooxidisation at high temperatures.

All of which make stainless steel an obvious firstchoice material for demanding applications.

Stainless Steel FamiliesStainless steel is used across a wide spectrum ofengineering applications and this has led to thedevelopment of the vast range of different types ofstainless steels that are now available. There arefour main grades of stainless steel:

Austenitic Stainless Steels

This group of stainless steels is the most widelyused and encompasses the generic 304 and 316grades of material. These materials are used in theACO Building Drainage manufacturing process andare ideal for applications including foodprocessing, dairy, brewing, pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical industries.

304 grade stainless steels contain around 18%chromium and 10% nickel and provides excellentcorrosion resistance. For applications wheresuperior corrosion resistance properties arerequired under extreme conditions particularlywhere chlorides are involved, 316 grade stainlesssteels are used and contain around 17%chromium, 12% nickel and 2.2% molybdenum.

Unlike all other grades of stainless steels, austeniticgrades are non-magnetic and as a consequencemagnetic particles are not attracted to the systemsurfaces which otherwise would encourage bothcontamination and corrosion.

Ferritic Stainless Steels

Ferritic stainless steels have inferior corrosionresistance properties compared to austenitic 304and 316 grades and are used in less demandingapplications such as domestic appliance and motorcar trim. This grade of stainless steel is slightly morebrittle when compared to austenitic grades.

Ferritic steels contain between 11.5% and 16.5%chromium and less than 0.5% nickel. This group ofsteels are magnetic and will attract particulateswhich can cause contamination problems. Ferriticsteels are not suitable for drainage products.

Page 47: ACO Stainless Steel Eurogullies Eurogully Gully System.pdfFor Fixed Height and Telescopic Eurogullies Page 36 ... only in the selection of fabricated metal gratings and covers for

FAMILIES AND CORROSION RESISTANCE

Martensitic Stainless Steels

Martensitic steels are magnetic and have thehighest strength of the groups of stainless steels, however they also have the poorest corrosionresistance. They can be hardened by heattreatment and generally find their main applicationin cutlery manufacture.

Martensitic steels contain around 12.5% chromiumand contain a relatively high carbon content of0.3% (austenitic and ferritic steels contain around0.02% and 0.04% carbon respectively).

Martensitic steels’ poor corrosion resistance makethem unsuitable for drainage applications.

Duplex Stainless Steels

Duplex stainless steels have an effectiveaustenitic/ferritic structure and are characterised bygood corrosion resistance, high strength and inparticular, good resistance to stress corrosioncracking.

Duplex steels contain around 22% chromium,5.5% nickel, 3% molybdenum and 0.02% carbon. This group of steels are magnetic and will attractparticulates which can cause contaminationproblems and therefore are unsuitable fordrainage applications.

Stainless Steel CorrosionResistanceThe single most important property of stainlesssteels and the reason for their existence andwidespread use, is their natural corrosionresistance. In spite of their name, stainless steelscan both ‘stain’ and corrode if used incorrectly.

The reason for the good corrosion properties is dueto the formation of a very thin, invisible oxide filmthat forms on the surface of the material inoxidising environments such as the atmosphereand water.

This film is a chromium-rich oxide which protectsthe steel from attack in aggressive environments. As chromium is added to a steel, a rapid reductionin the corrosion rate is observed because of thisprotective film. In order to obtain a compact andcontinuous passive film, a chromium content of atleast 11% is required. Passivity increases fairlyrapidly with increasing chromium content up toabout 17% chromium.

The most important alloying element is thereforechromium, but a number of other elementsincluding nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen alsocontribute to the corrosion resistance properties ofstainless steels. Other alloying elements may alsobe added to enhance the corrosion resistance inparticular environments.

Stainless steels must oxidise in order to form thepassive, chromium-rich oxide film. Stainless steelshave a very strong tendency to passivate and onlya small amount of oxidising agents are needed forpassivation - air and water are sufficient topassivate stainless steels and indeed, this oxide filmis spontaneously regenerated when exposed tooxygen. An important factor to note is that thepassive film is self-healing, so when the material iscut or machined or, should chemical or mechanicaldamage occur, the passive film will ‘heal’ or re-passivate in oxidising environments - unlike apainted finish on mild steel.

Selection of the correct grade of material for eachapplication is an important factor in the designprocess. It is important to note that even 316grades of stainless steel are not immune to all kindsof chemical attack; use with reducing solutions, such as hydrochloric and oxalic acids particularlywhen in concentrated and/or hot form, requirescareful consideration. See material resistance charton pages 8 and 9.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel FinishingProcessesA stainless steel finish should appear clean, smoothand faultless. This is obvious when the steel is usedfor such purposes demanding stringent hygiene ordecorative trim applications, but a fine surfacefinish is also crucial in respect to its corrosionresistant properties.

The corrosion resistance properties of stainless steelare achieved by the spontaneous formation of avery thin chromium-rich oxide layer over thesurface of the material. Unfortunately, surfacedefects and imperfections introduced during themanufacturing process may drastically disturb theself healing process of the passive layer andsubsequently reduce the corrosion resistance of thematerial. In the manufacturing process it is thewelding that creates the greatest challenge tocorrosion resistance. All ACO Building Drainageproducts are subjected to specialised treatment toensure the material retains the maximum resistanceto corrosion.

Pickle Passivation Plant

ACO resources include the largest pickle passivation plant in Europe

After welding stainless steel, a bluish hightemperature oxide film can be seen which hassubstantially inferior corrosion protection propertiescompared to the original passive layer. Immediatelybeneath this blue oxide film is a thin layer ofchromium depleted metal which makes the metalsurface susceptible to corrosion. Post weldtreatment is, therefore, very important to restorethe corrosion protection properties and iseffectively achieved by removing the blue hightemperature oxide film and chromium depletedlayer to restore the surface of the material. This‘cleaning’ is essentially a controlled corrosionprocess using chemicals, this will restore not onlyits original corrosion resistance performance butalso the high quality aesthetics.

The chemical processing methods used in the ACO Building Drainage process are summarised asfollows:

48

Stainless SteelFINISHING PROCESSES

Untreated Stainless Steel

The blue oxide film has substantially reduced corrosionresistance.

Stainless SteelFINISHING PROCESSES

Pickle Passivation

The standard ACO Building Drainage manufacturingprocess uses the pickle passivation chemical finishingprocess to restore the products to their full optimumcorrosion resistant state without damaging thesurface finish. This is considered the best method forcleaning welded joints.

Pickle passivation is a two-phase process.

Pickling removes both the bluish high temperatureoxide film and the chromium depleted layer and isachieved by placing the components in a picklingbath containing a mixture of nitric acid andhydrofluoric acid.

The second phase is passivation and in many waysis similar to the pickling process. For this processthe components are placed in a bath containingnitric acid only. This treatment strengthens thepassive layer and also removes any iron impuritiesthat may have become embedded in the surface of the stainless steel during the manufacturingprocess.

This treatment is important where mechanicalcleaning of the components has taken place withthe use of wire brushes, grinding wheels and fileswhere iron particles from other materials maycontaminate the stainless steel surface.

Electropolishing

Electropolishing is ideal for producing a uniform, highly reflective lustre with an extremely smoothfinish even on the most complex product contours. This is a well proven method of polishing and isachieved by an electro-chemical process which isessentially the reverse of electroplating.

The components are immersed in a bath ofelectrolyte containing phosphoric acid where thecomponents become the anode of a direct currentelectrical circuit. The process is characterised by theselective attack on the surface of the componentswhereby upstanding roughnesses are preferentiallydissolved and will yield a progressively smoother, brighter surface.

For pharmaceutical and food processingindustries, bacterial resistance isconsiderably improved by theelectropolishing process.

Certain gratings within the ACO Building Drainagerange are electropolished as standard. All stainlesssteel products can be electropolished if required tospecial order.

Pickle Passivation Process.

Pickle Passivation restores corrosion resistance properties fully.

Electropolishing.

Electropolishing further enhances surface smoothness andprovides a brighter surface appearance.
