internationally renowned for inspired programming and the rapturous response of audiences and critics, the australian Chamber orchestra is a product of our country’s vibrant, adventurous and enquiring spirit. in performances across australia, around the world and on many recordings, the aCo moves hearts and stimulates minds with repertoire spanning six centuries and a vitality and virtuosity unmatched by other ensembles.

Richard tognetti has been artistic Director and lead Violin since 1989. Under his inspiring leadership, the aCo performs as a flexible and versatile ‘ensemble of soloists’, on modern and period instruments, as a chamber group, symphony orchestra and electro-acoustic collective. the aCo’s unique artistic style encompasses masterworks of the classical repertoire, innovative cross-artform projects and a vigorous commissioning program.

the orchestra stands while performing and the resulting sense of energy and individuality is one of the most commented-upon elements of aCo performances. several of the musicians perform with spectacularly fine instruments by history’s finest makers, including stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Guadagnini.

over fifty international tours across asia, europe and the Usa have drawn outstanding reviews

in 2005 our fledgling education program took its first uncertain steps to join the ecosystem of music education in australia. skip forward to 2013, and our activities have grown exponentially as a changing world of national education policy, cultural policy, and technological innovation churns around us. Creativity is in great demand as the government looks to the arts to prepare our young exports for the uncertain world ahead – a world that will be as vastly different from what we know now, as smartphones and ipads were to our parent’s generation. what better platform than music from which to launch a child’s awareness of their own potential to create?

“…the finest string ensemble on the planet.” the telegraph (UK)

for the aCo’s performances at the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, london’s wigmore hall, New York’s Carnegie hall and Vienna’s musikverein.

the aCo has 40 CDs and DVDs for sale at aco.com.au/shop, including the three-time aRia award-winning Bach CDs and the internationally acclaimed mozart Violin Concertos recording.

in 2005, the aCo inaugurated an ambitious national education program which includes outreach activities and mentoring of outstanding young musicians, including the formation of aCo2, an elite training orchestra which delivers the aCo’s regional touring and education programs.

aCo2 connects the next generation of talented young australian musicians with the stars of the aCo, creating a combined ensemble with a fresh, energetic performance style. the young musicians have all participated in the aCo’s emerging artist program and many already play in the state symphony orchestras but choose to spend time experiencing the aCo’s high-octane performance style. the best go on tour nationally and internationally with the aCo and it is a testament to the program’s success that former aCo2 members madeleine Boud and Rebecca Chan have been appointed members of the aCo.

in 2013 we continue to make our own small contribution to the ecosystem. our primary school programs bring music to underprivileged children, as well as combining the visual arts and music curriculums to deepen learning in each subject. our secondary school programs provide access to our exceptional musicians through workshops, open rehearsals, concerts and our own aCo academy. and finally, our emerging artists program trains the next generation of young australian musicians to perform at the highest possible level. in 2012 two of our emerging artists were on trial for principal positions in australian orchestras, and more have won jobs at home and abroad.

picton music & art

picton in partnership with picton public school, we bring music and visual art into the primary school classroom. american violinist sharon Roffman and local visual artist melissa wheeler combine forces to teach students about the different influences that shape music and art, helping them to express their ideas through visual art. the students’ artworks are showcased at local community events.

Classes include a combination of classroom teaching, skype and pre-recorded video lessons. Via skype, students are able to travel with sharon and meet other international touring musicians as she performs in europe and america.

Coursework samples and videos can be viewed at aco.com.au.

PROJECT RAMEAU aco & sydney Dance company

we share the stage with sydney Dance Company in this collaboration by Rafael Bonachela and Richard tognetti, sparked by their mutual passion for Rameau’s perfumed and powerful French Baroque dance music.

Rameau’s flair for rhythm and melody, and feeling for choreography, lead many to name him one of the greatest-ever ballet composers, certainly the most influential. Bonachela’s dynamic choreography, innate musicality and theatricality serve to illuminate this brilliant music.

these schools-only performances feature an introduction and behind-the-scenes discussion with aCo musicians and sDC artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, and a question-and-answer session at the end of the performance.

tickets are $25, one teacher per 10 students receives free entry. Book at aco.com.au or phone 1800 444 444.
