On the request of the Government of Pakistan, the Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) for Khyber Pukhtunkhawa (KP), Federally

Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Balochistan was established in 2010. This was part of the response to the 2009 crisis which

displaced over 2 million people in the western border areas of Pakistan. The MDTF was established to provide funding for

reconstruction, rehabilitation, reforms and other interventions needed to build peace and create the conditions for sustainable

development. The MDTF is administered by the World Bank and supported by eleven donors - Australia, Denmark, European

Union, Finland, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Turkey, UK and USA. The MDTF works on three programme streams:

The FATA Urban Centers Project is part of the MDTF portfolio. It supports the improvement of urban services in Khar, Bajaur

Agency and development of a framework for urban management in FATA. These stories are a snapshot of some of the results

under this project. Solar street lights were identified as a key priority during extensive community consultations. A total of 450 have

been installed. These lights have made it easier for patients to access health services at night where previously they had been

restricted from doing so either due to adverse security or the dark. This intervention has also helped enhance economic activity in

the area: vendors and traders are able to conduct business after sunset and the area's residents feel secure visiting them.
