Welcome to Changing Lanes

Changing Lanes is a seven-book reading series for adul t ESL l i teracy learners and can also be used in a low level ESL classroom as a supplementary reading and wri t ing resource. Changing Lanes was developed to address the need for relevant adul t ESL l i teracy resources for both newcomers and instructors . The s tories are about and for new immigrants who are s t i l l adjust ing to a new l i fe in Canada.

To the Teacher Changing Lanes is a seven book ESL reading series . These boo ks are essent ial ly “stand-alone” and do not need to be taught in the ord er in which th ey are p resented. The t i t le indicates the theme of each s tory.

Book 1: Housing and Family Li fe “A Day at Razia’s Home” Book 2: Get t ing Around: “Farid Takes the Bus” Book 3: Dental Heal th:“Amela Goes to the Dentis t” Book 4: ESL in Schools: “Daniela Goes to School” Book 5: Banking/Budget ing: “Fatima Goes to the Bank” Book 6: Grocery Shopping: “Wahida is at the Supermarket” Book 7: Dressing for the Weather:“From Liberia to Nova Scot ia”

Ha l i fax Immig ra n t Lea rn ing Cen t re

Changing Lanes has been al igned to the Canadian Language Benchmark ESL Li teracy Phase 1 and 2. The ESL Li teracy Benchmarks lay out the progression of reading, wri t ing and numeracy ski l ls for ESL adul ts who have l i t t le or no l i teracy ski l ls in their f i rs t language. The benchmarks are descriptors of what ESL Li teracy s tudents are able to do at various s tages o f their development . Each book deals wi th one or more l i fe ski l ls , for example: dressing for winter , eat ing wel l , taking a bus etc . Each book is divided into two components: reading material and learning act iv i t ies . S tories are authent ic and personal . They are repet i t ive in s tructure with a h igh-frequency vocabulary. The learning act iv i t ies are designed to provide speaking, wri t ing and reading comprehension pract ice . The teacher introduces the chapter wi th a set of act iv i t ies where new vocabulary is presented. As part of the introduct ion, s tudents may be asked to f i l l in the missing le t ters and copy the words to pract ice wri t ing . The af ter- reading set of act iv i t ies is designed to check comprehension and to make the s tory personal ly relevant .

Here are a few possib i l i t ies when supplement ing this mater ial: 1 . Discuss the s i tuat ions in the s tories wi th the s tudents:

v is i t to the dent is t , ca l l ing a superintendent e tc . • what has been their experience? • write group or individual language experience s tories • write in a journal 2 . Cut out pictures from story or parts of the s tory: • sequencing • discuss what is happening in the pictures • retel l the s tory • direct ional i ty 3 . Cut and enlarge the pictures: • match sen tences to the pictures from the s tory • sequencing • match to reading by teacher or taped s tory ( individual or group) 4 . Cut sentences in to words: • create awareness /s tress words as parts that make up a sentence • create awareness /s tress words as di f ferent parts of sentence: adject ive , pronoun etc . • word order • recreate the sen tence recognizing meaning of words/what is happening in the picture • spacing between words • punctuat ion, capi tal izat ion • change sentences by adding words not in the s to ry: adject ives , pronouns, e tc .

Ha l i fax Immig ra n t Lea rn ing Cen t re

5 . Read/wri te / f i l l in the b lanks: • note to superintendent • grocery shopping l is ts • hours of business • card for dental appointment • personal information on form for dent is t , e tc . 6 . Use high frequency words from one s tory or

accumulate from series: • Bingo • enlarge to font 72, cut out and use pocket chart to

review al l vocabulary before reading each t ime 7 . Use scenarios to discuss emotions/ feel ings 8 . Use to teach instruct ions: read, c ircle , underl ine, copy,

f i l l in , match, e tc .

Have fun!
