Welcome to Changing Lanes
Changing Lanes is a seven-book reading series for adul t ESL l i teracy learners and can also be used in a low level ESL classroom as a supplementary reading and wri t ing resource. Changing Lanes was developed to address the need for relevant adul t ESL l i teracy resources for both newcomers and instructors . The s tories are about and for new immigrants who are s t i l l adjust ing to a new l i fe in Canada.
To the Teacher Changing Lanes is a seven book ESL reading series . These boo ks are essent ial ly “stand-alone” and do not need to be taught in the ord er in which th ey are p resented. The t i t le indicates the theme of each s tory.
Book 1: Housing and Family Li fe “A Day at Razia’s Home” Book 2: Get t ing Around: “Farid Takes the Bus” Book 3: Dental Heal th:“Amela Goes to the Dentis t” Book 4: ESL in Schools: “Daniela Goes to School” Book 5: Banking/Budget ing: “Fatima Goes to the Bank” Book 6: Grocery Shopping: “Wahida is at the Supermarket” Book 7: Dressing for the Weather:“From Liberia to Nova Scot ia”

Changing Lanes has been al igned to the Canadian Language Benchmark ESL Li teracy Phase 1 and 2. The ESL Li teracy Benchmarks lay out the progression of reading, wri t ing and numeracy ski l ls for ESL adul ts who have l i t t le or no l i teracy ski l ls in their f i rs t language. The benchmarks are descriptors of what ESL Li teracy s tudents are able to do at various s tages o f their development . Each book deals wi th one or more l i fe ski l ls , for example: dressing for winter , eat ing wel l , taking a bus etc . Each book is divided into two components: reading material and learning act iv i t ies . S tories are authent ic and personal . They are repet i t ive in s tructure with a h igh-frequency vocabulary. The learning act iv i t ies are designed to provide speaking, wri t ing and reading comprehension pract ice . The teacher introduces the chapter wi th a set of act iv i t ies where new vocabulary is presented. As part of the introduct ion, s tudents may be asked to f i l l in the missing le t ters and copy the words to pract ice wri t ing . The af ter- reading set of act iv i t ies is designed to check comprehension and to make the s tory personal ly relevant .
