The total crush in the 2000 vintage was 482,000 tonnes. This was 12,000 tonnes (2.5%) down on the 1999 vintage. Asmaller vintage had been widely expected, because of adverse weather conditions leading up to vintage, but the effectof this was largely cancelled out overall by the large number of vines coming into production for the first time.

The estimated value of purchased fruit was $334 million. The estimated value of the total crush was $469 million1.

The South Australian Riverland (Lower Murray zone)2 produced over 60% of the crush by volume (40% by value). Thiswas significantly higher than last year, when this region accounted for 52% of the crush – and reflects both the poorvintage in other regions, and the significant amount of new plantings in the Riverland. The next largest regions interms of contribution were the Barossa Valley (37,500 tonnes or 8% of the total) and McLaren Vale (35,600 tonnes or7%). Both of these regions showed greatly reduced tonnages compared with 1999 - McLaren Vale down by 30% andthe Barossa down by 45%.

The three predominant varieties by far were Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, accounting for 26%, 19%and 15% of the crush respectively. The neutral utility grape Muscat Gordo Blanco accounted for 6% of the crush byvolume (but only 2% by value), and no other variety reached even 5%. There were shortfalls of around 20% in most ofthe major varieties statewide, probably as a result of the smaller than expected vintage.

Planting data are collected separately from the crush survey data. Because planting is primarily done in the latter halfof the year, planting figures are currently available up to the end of 1999. At that time, there were 55,000 hectaresplanted to grapevines in South Australia – of which 4,000 hectares (7%) were planted in 1999. This compares with7,700 hectares of new plantings in 1998, and suggests a slowing down in the industry’s rapid expansion.

1 This is estimated by multiplying the overall weighted average price for all purchased fruit by the total number of tonnes crushed (including winery-ownedfruit). It is not a very accurate figure because it assigns a somewhat arbitrary price to winery-owned fruit, which is not sold.2 See Section 2 overview for an explanation of the regional classifications in this document.

Definition of regions

Regions have been defined in accordance with declared or interim GI boundaries.Where a GI region has not been declared, or is too small to be reported separately, then the relevant GI zone is used. This means that there are slight variations fromthe regional categories used in previous surveys. In particular, this yearPadthaway has been reported separately from the rest of Limestone Coast zone– other, and McLaren Vale has been separated from the rest of Fleurieu. MountLofty zone – other incorporates what was previously Adelaide Plains, and LowerMurray zone incorporates what was previously the South Australian Riverland.A final category SA-other has been included to cover other non-declared, smallregions outside the other zones.

NB The regions in section 3 are the same as for section 2. However, the regionsin section 4 are defined differently. See the explanation at the start of section 4.

Total and preferred crush

The total crushed is the total tonnes crushed by a winery from a particular grapesource region (including grapes crushed by another winery on its behalf).

The total preferred is the tonnage that wineries would prefer to have received thisvintage.

% of demand supplied is the total tonnes crushed divided by the total preferredexpressed as a percentage. A value of 100% means that supply and demand wereequal. A value greater than 100% means that there was an oversupply, while avalue less than 100% means that wineries would have bought more if available –provided quality or other parameters were met.

Winery owned and independent grower owned vineyards

Fruit is separated into fruit produced from the winery’s own (winery owned) andfrom other (independent grower owned) vineyards. The proportion of fruitpurchased from independent growers is given as a percentage of the total. Thisfigure tends to vary by region and to some extent by variety.

Price

Price is defined as the farmgate price - ie the amounts paid or payable – includingbonuses or penalties based on baumé, but not including any other quality or end-use bonuses, nor including any amount paid for freight to the winery. Priceinformation is supplied by wineries as the purchase value in dollars for grapes ofeach variety. The weighted average price is calculated by dividing the totalpurchase value for a variety (summed across all wineries) by the total1 tonnespurchased of that variety. Winery grown grapes are not included in the calculationof weighted average price.

NB The Board has no control over the accuracy or completeness of the survey datareceived and cannot guarantee that changes will not be made to definitions ofprices or regions from year to year.

Reliability of weighted average price

Not all wineries supply pricing data. The figure in brackets after the weightedaverage price is an indicator of its reliability. This figure is the percentage of thetotal tonnes purchased for which pricing data was provided.

Highest and lowest price

Wineries are asked to report the highest and lowest prices paid for any parcel offruit of a particular variety, of any size. The figures in this report are the highest ofall highest prices, and the lowest of all lowest prices recorded – provided that atleast three wineries have provided this information for any particular variety.

Baumé

Baumé is recorded by each winery as the weighted average baumé of each varietypurchased. From this, a weighted average of the weighted average is calculated.

NB The weighted average baumé may include baumé readings for fruit purchasedfor sparkling or fortified wine as well as for table wine.

Reliability of weighted average baumé

Not all wineries provide baumé data – therefore there is a reliability measureincluded indicating the percentage of fruit for which a baumé reading was supplied.

1 In fact the calculation is done using only the tonnes purchased for which pricing data hasbeen supplied – not the total of all tonnes purchased (see Reliability of weighted averageprice).

Vintage reports

Langhorne Creek

The 1999-2000 growing season was slightly warmer if compared with historicaldata. The combination of warm weather during August and September and a drywinter resulted in an early budburst – approximately two weeks early. The period ofthe year was flowering occurs (November) was slightly wetter and cooler than anormal year. The three months prior to the commencement of vintage (December –February) were all slightly warmer than a normal year. These months were alsodrier than usual, with the exception of February. The wet February possiblycontributed to a slight delay in the ripening in some winegrape varieties.

Despite the wet start to vintage, disease pressure was relatively low. White grapevarieties were only slightly under pre-vintage estimates, while red grape varietieswere well under estimate (younger vineyards produced yields that were closer tothe pre-vintage estimates).

The quality of Shiraz wines made from the 2000 vintage was consistently good, withthe older vines in particular producing some excellent wines due to the lower yields. The quality of Cabernet Sauvignon was in general good but was not of the sameconsistent quality as the Shiraz. Generally, all white grape varieties produced asolid quality wine.

McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale experienced a challenging vintage in 2000. Cool and overcastweather during November and December was conducive to powdery mildewdevelopment. Fruit set was marginal in some varieties and hot dry weather inJanuary and February reduced yields of most varieties. Shiraz, CabernetSauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon yields were down by up to 40%on the 1999 tonnage. Heavy rainfall in the latter part of February and at regularintervals after this time delayed the onset of fruit maturity and made pickingscheduling tricky. The weather conditions were ideal for botrytis developmentduring this period. Despite the challenging season, there were some excellentparcels of fruit picked from the 2000 vintage. The early picked fruit that missed outon the rain, and the fruit that remained sound until harvest have made good wines.

Coonawarra

The 2000 vintage was the earliest on record for Coonawarra, and the lower thanaverage yields have been compensated for by outstanding fruit quality. Yields weredown by 20% to 30%, and by up to 50% in the older Cabernet Sauvignon vines.Contributing to the decrease in yield were a severe frost in late April 1999, an earlybudburst due to warmer than average maximum temperatures in the June– Octoberperiod, below average temperatures in November which impacted on flowering, lowbunch numbers and frost in the spring. The March-April 2000 period saw theslowest ripening for years. The long, cool ripening period provided excellentconditions for flavour and colour enhancement. The whites from 2000 have shownexcellent varietal definition with great flavour and good acid balance. Theexpectation is that the whites will provide average to above average quality wines.Taken from the Wine Industry Journal Vol 15 (4) July-August 2000.

Padthaway

This season saw an early budburst following another dry winter and was one totwo weeks earlier than last year. Vigorous early growth was followed by a month ofcooler weather. This cool period from mid-October to mid-November caused someproblems in young vines with the uptake of trace elements, due to lack of rootactivity. Frosts were experienced in late October and early November, causingdamage in some areas. Up to 5% of the region was affected with isolated patchessuffering up to 50% damage. Cool and windy weather during flowering resulted in areduced set, particularly in older vines, resulting in reduced yields. Disease levelswere low with no problems from downy mildew. Some powdery mildew was evidentin the late summer. Harvesting conditions were ideal with little rain and grapeswere harvested in good condition. Quality was excellent this season, due both tothe lower yields, and to growers’ continued efforts to produce high quality grapes.

Adelaide Hills

Vintage 2000 was not a season for the faint-hearted. An early budburstfollowing a warmer than average end to winter, which led into a cool and dampspring produced a poor fruit set. Summer began with heat, and by February theeffect from the northerly monsoons encroaching upon us with warm, humid and wetconditions led to some berry splitting, particularly in Pinot Noir. Downy mildew andbotrytis were the main disease pressures and powdery was all but absent. A goodseason to put to test growers’ pest and disease monitoring skills and resultant sprayprograms. Vintage began early across the region, but stalled as varieties took theirtime to ripen. Overall, tonnages were down 10 – 40% across the region, with somevarieties affected more than others, but reports from the winemakers on the qualityof juice and wines are surprisingly good.

Clare Valley

Seasonal influence played a dramatic part in the 1999-2000 growing season inthe Clare Valley. As a result of adverse conditions the overall tonnage was welldown, with reports of crops being up to 60% lower than 1999. Generally, greaterreductions were experienced in white varieties, with Riesling being worst affected.

Hail took its toll in the Leasingham-Auburn area early in October; cool and windyconditions affected fruit set, and the generally cool and very dry January followed bythe heatwaves of February resulted in extensive sunburn – Riesling was particularlyhard hit. Heavy rain late in February caused splitting, especially in Riesling, furtherreducing potential tonnage. These events together with the general scarcity ofwater indicate the difficulty of the growing season. However, although quantitywas down, the quality has been very good – with winemakers reporting great colourand intensity of flavour from the reds. Overall, the 2000 Rieslings are perhaps notup to the outstanding quality of the previous three vintages. Sugar levels wereslightly lower than most years. A number of winemakers commented about the highquality of Semillon this year, with low yields perhaps contributing to this.

Mount Lofty zone – other (Adelaide Plains)

Vintage 2000 started with another dry warm winter. The growing season kicked offvery early, with budburst in Chardonnay occurring in the 2nd week of August. This wasfollowed by a cooler spring with good rains in late September and early October. Thesecool moist conditions were ideally suited to powdery mildew and some infections werereported. Conditions remained cool during November, December, and early January. Inlate January very hot conditions occurred which advanced maturity and led to thepicking of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc in late January and early February.Chardonnay was soon to follow and things were progressing rapidly until around the20th of February when approx two inches of rain fell. The rain delayed the picking ofsome early reds but some Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon was picked up to one monthearlier than last year. Despite the rain most fruit was picked by mid March, except for afew high producing vineyards, which suffered due to continued rain in March.

The quality of white fruit was generally high, particularly Chardonnay and SauvignonBlanc. Quality of early harvested reds was also high on the back of low yields but thehigher cropping vineyards were of lesser quality due to rain events in March.

Lower Murray zone (Riverland)

The lead up to harvest was generally good, apart from considerable rain throughthe early growing period October – November. There was some powdery mildew, but very little incidence of downy. Generally crops were down marginally – in thepremium area, Chardonnay was the variety showing the poorest crop. The heavyrains in February put the crop at risk, but luckily most fruit survived. Quality wasvery good until the large rainfalls of April caused a deterioration in the fruit – withCabernet Sauvignon suffering the most. These rains have caused major qualityproblems for the region.

SA other

Due to dry winter conditions budburst was approximately two weeks early. Goodrains and cool conditions followed, leading to good fruit set in the warmer coastalregions but poor fruit set in the higher cooler regions. Heatwave conditions in lateJanuary hastened ripening and the first Shiraz was harvested on the 25th ofJanuary, in Port Germein. Cool conditions in the early part of the season led togood acid retention and quality was generally high, with good colours in reds.Disease pressure was low.

Section 3 overview

Estimated and preferred

The estimated tonnage is the total tonnes expected to be crushed in each of theforecast years. This is made up of estimates of production/supply of winery grownand purchased fruit.1

The preferred tonnage is the tonnes that wineries would prefer to receive in each ofthe forecast years, in order to meet projected requirements in accordance with salesforecasts. This would take into account projected growth and any restrictions in thearea of capital equipment and inventory expansion, but would not take into accountany possible grape supply restrictions. Note: the preferred figure may be lower thanthe estimated figure if supply contracts are in place.

Where the preferred tonnage is higher than the estimated tonnage, a shortfall insupply is indicated. However, this does not necessarily mean a general demand forany fruit of that variety. There may be particular quality parameters or othercharacteristics that must be met.

The projections are provided as at June 2000, and are subject to variation over time, with changes in market requirements, changes in the supply situation and individualvariables. It should be noted that there is considerable variation from one survey tothe next in projections for the same future forecast year.

The projections should be interpreted and used cautiously and should not berelied upon in making decisions about future production.

1 A more detailed breakdown of estimated future production into winery grown and purchasedfruit is available separately from the Board’s office.

Forecast trends

Generally forecasts are showing a convergence between estimated and preferredfigures, as new plantings come into production, bringing supply into line with demand, and as supply contracts are adjusted to reflect lower demand targets. In most cases, forecast tonnages show a plateau within the five year projection timeframe.

Projections have tended to be revised downward compared with last year’s survey, which may be at least partially a result of the smaller vintage this year. The currentcrush tends to be the benchmark from which projections are derived. The exceptionsto this general trend are Langhorne Creek (reds), Limestone Coast - other andPadthaway, where projections for 2001 are higher than they were in 1999.

The graphs show trends in production and projection data for up to nine years ofhistorical production, and five years of forecast data. Different starting years fordifferent regions indicate when data began to be collected separately for that region.Generally, the graphs show that regions are becoming more specialised in theirproduction, concentrating on one or two major varieties only.

Reliability of forecasts

Not all wineries provide estimates of future intakes and the number tends to decreasethe further out the forecast year. Therefore an apparent reduction in tonnages in lateryears may mean that some wineries have not provided a forecast for those years.

A reliability measure for each estimate based on the number of wineries providing aforecast may be obtained separately from the Board’s office.

Section 4 overview

Planting data

Planting data for section 4 is not derivedfrom the 2000 Australian Regional CrushSurvey of winemakers. The information isobtained from the vineyard registermaintained by the Phylloxera and GrapeIndustry Board of South Australia.

All vineyard owners with more than 0.5hectares are required by law to registerwith the Board, and to complete anaccurate vineyard return each year, givingupdated details of their plantings. Thisinformation is kept strictly confidential. Anaccurate vineyard register enables theBoard to produce complete, up-to-datestatistical information on vineyardplantings by variety, year planted andlocation.

Planting statistics – overview

The South Australian vineyard registershows that there were 55,062 hectaresplanted under vines in South Australia asat 31st May 2000. Of these, 4,044hectares (7%) were planted in 1999.

Red varieties now account for 69% of allvines (38254 hectares) compared with66% in 1998. However, while the vastmajority (90%) of new plantings in 1999were of red varieties, this figure is lowerthan the equivalent for 1998 (98%),indicating a small relative increase inplanting of white varieties.

Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) and Shiraz(28%) together account for 53% of allgrapevines planted in South Australia, withChardonnay the third largest variety at11% of the total.

There are 2912 growers in the twelveidentified regions in South Australia. 59%of growers own properties less than 10hectares in size, while 6% of growers ownproperties of 50 hectares or more. On theother hand, the 6% with the largestvineyards account for nearly 50% of thetotal plantings.

The biggest increase in plantings was inthe Lower Murray zone (SA Riverland),with over 1000 hectares of new vineyardsplanted. However, the fastest growingregion in 1999 was the Limestone Coast –other zone, which showed a 17% increasein plantings during 1999.

Explanatory notes to accompany thetables

1. Vineyard plantings are recorded bythe hundred and section number, notby Geographical Indication .I n f o r m a t i o n i s p r e s e n t e dapproximately in GI regions or zonesby classifying each hundred into a GIregion or zone. This classification isnot always accurate, as somehundreds are split between GIregions. A list of the hundredsincluded in each region or zone isprovided with each table.

2. Where vines have been removed ortopworked and replaced, only the newvariety is recorded in the database. Therefore each plantings column onlyincludes those vines planted in agiven year that are still in the ground. This explains why the figure for agiven year may be different in the2000 report compared with the 1999report.

3. Where a 0 appears in the table, thisindicates the presence of a planting ofless than 0.5hectare. Where a cell isblank, there are no plantings of thatvariety. Rounding may produce aslight error in totals.

4. Minor anomalies in the record-keepingsystem account for slight variations inthe total area reported for the state indifferent tables.

This table shows the number of growers in each region with a particular total vineyard area inthat region. For example, in the Adelaide Hills, there are 114 growers with less than 10hectares planted to grapes, and 8 growers with over 50 hectares of grapevines. From thetable it can be seen that a small minority of growers (6%) with property sizes of 50 hectaresor more owns 48% of the total vineyard area.

NB The sum of the number of growers in each region is greater than the total number ofregistered growers in the state because some growers have plantings in more than oneregion.
