WHAT ARE ACIDS?

Acids produce hydrogen ions in water.

Example of an acid (HA) in solution

WHAT ARE BASES?

They are metal oxides or metal hydroxides.

Examples:

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

Copper (II) oxide (CuO)

Copper (II) Oxide

NaOH

Can you name some other examples of

bases?

SOLUBLE BASES

Soluble bases are called alkalis

Alkali dissolves in water to produce hydroxide (OH-) ions

ACID AND BASE REACTION

The reaction between an acid and a base is called neutralisation.

Example 1:

Sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid Sodium chloride + water

Now, let’s write the chemical equation!NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O

Example 2

Copper (II) oxide + sulfuric acid copper(II) sulfate + water

Now, let’s write the chemical equation!CuO + H2SO4 CuSO4 + H2O
