Overview • Started in 2005 • Aims to give understanding of whole energy

systems to PhD students • International attendance: 50 UK, 50 non-UK • Typically 400+ applications • Professionally facilitated through tutor team • Mix of lectures, projects, skills training • Strong social elements • Technical exchanges between students

Inputs

12 invited lecturers, each give 1 hour “input” relevant to Project

Pitched at non-expert level and aims to show relevance to total system

Most also give 1-2 hour “masterclass” in form of more detailed tutorial – 3 or 4 in parallel

Additionally available for informal discussion

Energy Islands Project • The world = three Islands (broadly speaking an

EU/US hybrid, China and a developing country) • Agreed: binding agreement to reduce global

carbon emissions by a fixed amount by a certain date. Islands must agree the contribution of each to the global target.

• Their resources and needs are such that they cannot meet targets without influence on others

• Responsibility on three Island decarbonisation committees – an agreement needs to be in place by Thursday.

• Students address in groups, using “inputs” to inform
