Nicole Lewis Born and raised in Des Moines, Nicole has a passion for community involvement and working with individuals in need. In 2012, she received a Human Services degree from Des

Moines Area Community College, then transferred to University of Iowa to pursue her Bachelor’s in Social Work degree.

She also enjoys volunteering her time, and currently sits on the committee for the Self-Sufficiency Program with the Des Moines Municipal Housing Authority. She is also the program chair for I’ll Make Me a World.

EVELYN K. DAVIS MISSIONEvery person has potential and the possibilities are endless. At the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families (EKD), we strive to help individuals improve their lives, realize their potential, and reach their dreams. EKD uses an integrated support service network to help individuals and families achieve success. This is done through education, targeted skills training, real work experience, and connection to employment opportunities. Our overall goal is to provide services that will help individuals and their families improve the way they manage their daily lives.

“The Center is a great example of how working together as a community can create hope and knock down the barriers that exist within an imperfect world. At the Center, we believe there are no limitations as to how

collaboration and positive influence can be a motivator in creating opportunity for change. If we continue to have the mix of visionaries, leaders, diplomats, doers and thinkers

cooperating collaboratively, we can continue to have positive impact within the community.” — Marvin DeJear

HALLOWEEN SAVINGS

MASTERS BUSINESS BOOTCAMP

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS HOME-BUYER EDUCATIONAL COURSE

The National Retail Federation (NRF) projects that American consumers will spend about $7.4 billion on Halloween this year, shelling out an average of $77 on decorations, costumes and candy.

The main concern is that a lot of people don’t budget for Halloween like they do for Christmas or similar holidays. Instead, Halloween purchases are often spontaneous and unplanned.

Fortunately, it's possible to cut the costs associated with this holiday by planning ahead and making practical purchases. Check out these tips to make your Halloween a great, yet affordable holiday:

Coupons — looking for printable coupons online and in the newspaper can save you quite a bit of money in the long run. For instance, Halloween Express offers a 25% off coupon when you subscribe to email updates and offers.

Candy — buy candy from a warehouse club, buy generic brands, and get creative with ready-made treat bags from the dollar store.

Costumes — Costumes — DIY projects are usually less expensive. Check out Pinterest for some great ideas, look up Listserv for others looking to trade, or simply get creative! For example, attach ripped up newspaper to an outfit to represent “breaking news” or draw a thermometer on your shirt and wear a bike tire around your neck to signify being “sick and tired." The Martha Stewart website has great ideas as well.

Décor — shop at online party stores or surplus stores. Check for damaged goods—many stores offer discounts for those less-than-perfect items. Again, DIY projects are always cost-effective (Pinterest). Pick your own pumpkin; if you are going to check out mazes and such with the family anyway, picking your own pumpkin is cheaper than buying on at the store. If you can, wait until the 30th or a few days before Halloween, because plenty of stores reduce prices to get rid of extra inventory. Buy some arts and crafts at the dollar store and get the whole family involved. Get versatile; uncarved pumpkins can be used as decoration for Thanksgiving too.

Research — Do some research; there are always free events and activities in the community you can participate in or get involved with.

Shop in November — The day after Halloween, all décor, costumes and accessories go on sale, sit it's the perfect time to stock up for next year. Helpful tip: If you plan on doing this consider buying the next size up for children, and stick with items that store easily.
