Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) History and Scope
Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro by realizing the continuous
rise in educational expenses, took the initiatives and established the “Student Financial
Aid Office” (SFAO) in August 2006, with the collaboration of Higher Education
Commission, Islamabad. The theme of establishment of this office was to elevate the
socio-economic position of the needy & deserving undergraduate students by providing
access to quality education through Need-based and Merit Scholarships / Financial
Assistances and educational Loans (Qarz-e-Hasna).
This office is dedicated to elevate the socio-economic position of the needy & deserving
undergraduate students by providing access to quality education through need-based
and merit-based Scholarships / Financial Assistances and educational Loans.
The Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) is participating in various national and
international student financial assistance programs. Thus, all Scholarships / Financial
Aid Cases are routed through this Office. A centralized record of all undergraduate
students getting any financial aid is kept in the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO).
The Office took the start in the Office of the Dean Faculty of Engineering. (Late) Prof.
Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Pathan, Ex-Dean Faculty of Engineering was assigned the
Charge of Focal Person and Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali as Assistant Focal Person. A
Case Analyst was also hired under the directives of HEC. After the bereavement Death
of Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ibrahim Pathan, the responsibility of Focal Person was shifted
to the Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rafiq Abro, Ex-Dean FEECE.
Subsequently, Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali was given the full-fledged Charge of Focal
Person after the retirement of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rafiq Abro.
At present, the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) exists in the New Admin Block of
the University and working under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali.

Mission Statement
Through a sincere commitment to all deserving students and their families, we
strive to eliminate financial and other barriers to higher education. We make a
conscious effort to reach out to those needy students with exceptional economic
and educational needs.
Objectives
The objective of the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) is to provide assistance
through Grants, Scholarships, Zakat and educational Loans (Qarz-e-Hasna) to
students who are unable to pursue their higher education due to the barriers for
those families who cannot afford the cost of education beyond higher education.
To accomplish the mission, the SFAO also establishes the following program
objectives:
Provide financial relief to the meritorious and needy students.
Provide quality advising services by addressing individual student needs,
responding to student inquiries in a timely manner.
Use effective procedure to ensure limited, funds are provided to students
who demonstrate the greatest financial need.
Comply with all prescribed rules, regulations, and policies of financial aid
and scholarship programs as set by the Donor Agency and the University.

Achievements:
Since achieving the objective of supporting the needy and meritorious students
while pursuing their studies at this University needs funding, it is worth
mentioning that, at the moment, SFAO directly or indirectly has valuable
contributions of various national and international donors in shape of different
scholarships / financial assistance programs. However, at the time of
establishment in 2006, this Office had only few Donors’ contributions.
SFAO has dealt with Higher Education Commission Islamabad’s various
scholarship Programs. The HEC-Japanese and Financial Support for Meritorious
Students were two big programs in a row. The University was allotted 40
numbers of slots in HEC-Japanese and 09 slots in the HEC-FSMNS. The Office
and its staff have also been appreciated by HEC on the working coordination and
efforts. In spite of this, HEC has also considered this University in the
scholarship program titled “Provision of Higher Education Opportunities for
Student of Baluchistan and Fata”. Due to work efficiency and transparency of
SFAO, the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad has also considered the
name of this university for their existing and upcoming scholarship and other
financial assistance programs namely (1) “Student Advancement Fund
Endowment (SAFE) / Student Advancement Fund (SEF)” with the collaboration
of Promotion of Education in Pakistan (PEP) Foundation, USA, and (2). PAK-
USAID Need & Merit Based Scholarship Program which is first time introduced
for Engineering Universities after completion of Phase-I of Agriculture
Universities. Recently, USAID Pakistan with the collaboration of Higher
Education Commission, Islamabad, has allocated 73 scholarships to the students
of Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro.
The Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) invited various national and
international donors and arranged the meetings. The Donors not only
contributed through SFAO, but also increased the no. of scholarships / slots for
Mehran University of Engineering & Technology. The Pakistan Engineering
Congress, Lahore, started with two slots to the University and now they are
awarding 08 Scholarship each year. In spite of this, as an individual Donor, Mr.
Page 6 of 20 Achievement Report of Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO)
Tufail Ahmed Memon and his friends who are resident of USA, supporting
students through SEAFA scholarships. Mr. Tufail Ahmed Memon started the
scholarship program in 2008 with few scholarships and now he has made this as
regular feature for MUET and awarding 35 Scholarships every year. The Sindhi
Association of North America (SANA) was awarding 4 scholarships and directly
to the students, but after detail deliberations and regular meeting with Mr. Agha
Zaffar who was representing SANA, they have made responsible SFAO for
finalizing the recommendations and increased the number of scholarships up to
16 every year.
The Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) has facilitated the students by services
of 17 faculty members of their own departments as coordinators for SFAO to
answer the queries of students at their department regarding the various
scholarship programs, and assist the students during filling the application
forms.
SFAO has facilitated more than 1,350/- students through various scholarships /
financial assistances during 2013-14. Further to this, many students have also
been facilitated directly by the Donor on behalf of recommendation of SFAO.
The Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) has invested about 14.7 (Million)
leftover amount of completed HEC Scholarship Projects, and earning handsome
profit in millions on compound interest basis. This fund is known as Endowment
Fund of SFAO.
The Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) and its working coordination have been
appreciated on various floors by different Donors. The Higher Education
Commission (HEC), Islamabad, Sindhi Association of North America (SANA),
Sindhi Engineers of America, Professional Education foundation and many other
donors have acknowledged the services of SFAO.

SUCCESS STORY
I basically belong to Thatta. When I was studying in
bachelors my parents were not in condition to bear my
complete educational expenses, and to me it was always
hand to mouth situation. Then after a term when I got
familiar with my university I came to know about
Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO). I went there, and
discussed my whole financial situation. They put me in
comfort by saying not to worry. Then after a few days I
was called to visit SFAO, there I was asked to fill a
simple form of Saudi Arab scholarship. Within a couple
of months I was again called by SFAO, and at that time
they asked me to collet cheque, as I was conformed for
that scholarship. I cannotexpress my happiness, I was
too worried about my annual fee but thanks to SFAO
they helped me to solve this problem. I was awarded by
that scholarship annually for the four years of my
Bachelors. Form that money I used to pay my annual
fee and also used to buy the most important books.
With that help of SFAO I have successfully completed
my B.E in Electrical Engineering and now I am
working as Lecturer in MUET Jamshoro

Mehran UET, Jamshoro
I would like to convey my personal sincere thanks and appreciation for the support
provided by Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) of Mehran UET that took part in
my life to fulfill the financial needs during my graduation here.
I was a very poor student in the university. My family’s financial condition was not
stable and even it was hard to meet the minimum household expenses. Thus, I was
not able to pay the university fee.
I had applied for the scholarship in my first semester. This scholarship was given
by BHP-Billiton Company through SFAO office after proper interview and on
merit basis. SFAO was granted me the scholarship worth of Rs. 75000/= per
annum.
Now, I am really very much thankful to the SFAO office which granted me such a
great scholarship and it just made me confident enough to face all expenditure of
living and studying there.
After successfully completing my graduation, now I am working here in same
university and my own university MUET, and living a stable life and also
supporting my family.

Engr. Gulzar Ahmed Consultant Engineer M-I SWACO;
Leading Oil and Gas Industry giant Schlumberger, Germany.
I witnessed, it was arduous for my family to send me
university, and they had low wages and could not spare any
amount to afford my expenses for 4 years of university
education.
So financial assistance was necessary to complete
graduation. Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali visited our
department along with other members of SFAO, they asked
students to apply for the scholarship, so I did. It was
delightful to see my name in the selection list. The awarded
amount was good to meet all educational and boarding
expenses. The Scholarship provided relief for the family
and motivated me to complete the graduation without any
stress.
After completion of studies in early 2011, instead of
wasting time in wait and intention of handsome job, I
preferred to be conducive, so started working in a technical
institute. My responsibilities were to conduct classes,
keeping record of students, resolving enrollment and
registration issues indicated by Sindh Board of Technical
Education. I remained there for two years and kept
applying to avail a job related to my degree.
In June 2013 my dream came true, I was hired as
Consultant Engineer by M-I SWACO; part of leading oil
and gas industry giant Schlumberger.
The assistance made my family’s dreams come true. I feel;
all this was possible because of assistance made by HEC
and SFAO MUET.
I am grateful and appreciate dedication of SFAO towards
students’ guidance and assistance. SFAO MUET is
diligent to facilitate future engineers to pursue their
education and career.

When I joined the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro, at
that time my family was not able to afford the burden of my fees because my father
was a retired teacher and supporting the whole family alone. Beside my education
expenses,my father had to bear the educational expenditure of my three sisters and
one brother who were also studying at that time.I thought to quit my engineering
education because of financial issues with my family. One day, I saw
advertisement of HEC scholarshipin the university. I went to student financial
office (SFAO) and applied for the HEC scholarship.I got the scholarship not only
for the first year but also for the remaining three years after going through the
interviews conducted by SFAO.Every year I got the handsome amount, form that
payment my father managed the whole expenses and fees of mine. Because of
HEC Scholarship I have passed my B.E with first division. Nowadays, I am
working in a multinational company, Pak Oasis Industries Pvt (Ltd.) Karachi. In
this company I am Solar System Engineer, and I am very happy in my life because

Engr. Sifat Ali
Assistant Manager (Technical)
K-ELECTRIC LTD. Karachi.
I Sifat Ali Bhutto, nowadays living in Karachi, basically I am from very small
village in District Khairpur (Mirs). My only ambition from childhood was to
become an engineer but the big obstacle in my track was poverty. My father was a
laborer and his income was from hand to mouth. Allah has created a path for me at
every step of life and I completed my education from Primary to Intermediate level
with flying colors with the help and guidance of teachers.
My first achievement was getting admission in department of Electrical
Engineering, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro on
merit basis in 2006. But here again I found a big hindrance in my career that was
poverty, I was unable to afford the heavy expenses of university and was about to
leave the university. Nevertheless,Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali, the focal
personSFAOhelped me to get the “Japanese need based Merit Scholarship” for
four years. With the help of scholarship I got energy to work hard and completed
my degree in electrical engineering among the top 10 students with overall
81.09%.
On basis of that qualification I got my first job in Pakistan’s first Wind power plant
in Jhimpir, Sindh, Pakistan, as Trainee Electrical Engineer and worked there for
more than two years and currently I am working as Assistant Manager (Technical)
in “K-ELECTRIC LTD” Karachi since 2013.
