  • Dear Friends,

As southwestern Pennsylvanias largest provider of lifelong supports and services for individuals with disabilities and their families, ACHIEVA is dedicated to providing quality programming that will both support and empower people with disabilities.

Through this plan you can expect even more from ACHIEVA, including opportunities in employment, community-living and financial planning for individuals with disabilities and their families. We have already begun implementing many of our objectives and are well on our way to exceeding many goals.

With over 60 years of experience, we have set a pace for others to follow by creating inclusive and innovative supports and services. ACHIEVA plans to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring people with disabilities and their families have the best quality of life possible.

We look forward to your continuous support and another great year!

ACHIEVA Named Non-Profit of the Year

ACHIEVA was selected as Non-Profit of the Year by DonorPro, the premier provider of nonprofit fundraising solutions. The Awards program is designed to showcase creativity and achievement in fundraising across DonorPros global nonprofit customer base.

ACHIEVA was recognized for effectively executing our strategic fundraising and operational plans. DonorPro took notice of our recent success in our $8 million capital campaign.

Typically, organizations see a decline in annual growth when embarking on a large scale campaign. However, ACHIEVA managed to not only succeed in our campaign, but experience a 10 percent increase in annual funding.

ACHIEVA recognized for their exceptional leadership in the community.

    Top DonorPros Award Competition

We demonstrated great leadership in the non-profit sector, excelling in new practices, which brought significant growth in new community partnerships and revenue. During this time, ACHIEVA also experienced cost reduction and an $117,000 savings in facilities energy greening initiatives.

The competition was quite fierce, said Roy Cheran, DonorPros VP of Marketing, who announced that four organizations from the United States and one from Malaysia distinguished themselves as winners in the competition.

The Awards program was designed to showcase the creativity and achievement in fundraising across the world and ACHIEVA clearly demonstrated some impressive achievements and is truly deserving of this award and recognition.

    Department of Human Services

The time has come to bring the Department of Public Welfare into a new era of assisting Pennsylvanians,- Beverly Mackereth (Secretary, Department of Human Services)

    11

while less than five percent goes to services that could be considered welfare.

The mission of the Department of Human Services is to improve the quality of life for Pennsylvanias individuals and families, promoting opportunities for independence through services and supports while demonstrating accountability for taxpayer resources. The vision is to see Pennsylvanians living safe, healthy and independent lives.

The name change will be phased in gradually in an effort to keep costs down. The department will replace deliverables, such as letterhead and business cards as needed and integrate necessary system changes with scheduled upgrades. Its expected to cost about $1 million over several years.

September 24, 2014, Governor Corbett signed House Bill 993, officially changing the name of the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) to the Department of Human Services.

Pennsylvania had been just one of two states continuing to use the word welfare in the name of the agency. For several years advocates have pushed for the name change, saying the word welfare increasingly has negative connotations, and human services more accurately reflects the agencys mission and how it spends most of its dollars. ACHIEVA was one of the leading organizations that urged lawmakers to pass this legislation.

Currently, over 90 percent of the departments resources go towards serving seniors, people with disabilities, victims of abuse and people recovering from addiction,

While our name may be changing, I can assure you, our commitment to assisting our most vulnerable population is unwavering and our current services will remain intact. Our new name will reflect the services and supports our agency currently provides to individuals and their families. - Secretary Mackereth

Marisa Niwa, in Harrisburg, advocating for the DPW name change.

  • Meet Lamont

During tryouts for the Greater Pittsburgh Special Hockey Associations Steel City Icebergs, Lamont could not skate at all, but he wouldnt leave the ice until he could. His determination proved contagious earning him the support of several Iceberg coaches. They worked with him until he was not only able to skate, but play in a game and as goalie. Lamont now travels with the team and has even stood in as goalie for other teams across the region. He has been described as a player of integrity, with a positive attitude. He inspires the Iceberg coaches, his teammates and opponents to be the best they can be no matter their circumstances. Now that Lamont has shattered his hockey goal, hes working on his next goal, to read. ACHIEVA staff, under the leadership of Community Homes Supervisor, Holly Keene, has developed a literacy program, designed just for Lamont. This program will help further enhance his life and allow him to grow to his fullest potential.

His hometown is Philadelphia, but he calls Pittsburgh home. At just 21 years old, Lamont became a member of the ACHIEVA family, moving into one of ACHIEVAs residential homes. He came to ACHIEVA with lots of strength, determination and most importantly, goals. His first goal was to play hockey. Never mind that he had never played, nor had he ever been ice skating. He didnt see any of that as a road block, in fact, he was not only determined to play but play arguably one of the most difficult positions on the team, goalie.

I gave her Power of Attorney (POA) to manage my money in case I became sick. Now there is nothing left in my bank account to pay for the personal care home where I live with my husband. Even worse, my husband needs

hearing aids and she (POA) has not paid the bill. - Josie, 80 years of age.

Unfortunately, Josies story is not uncommon. In 2014, Pennsylvanians reported more than 18,500 cases of elder abuse. Of those cases, over 66 percent were cases of neglect and 16 percent were cases of financial exploitation, the second most common and fastest growing category. Those numbers are expected to increase as Pennsylvanians continue to age. It is projected that by 2020 one out of every four residents in the Commonwealth will be over the age of 60. ACHIEVAs Older Adult Protective Services (OAPS) team provides advocacy and support to people 60 years of age and older. Caseworkers investigate and intervene in cases of abuse, neglect, abandonment and exploitation. This help is available to adults living in the community as well as those in licensed facilities. ACHIEVA was introduced to Josie in the spring of 2013 after she entrusted the wrong person to tend to her personal finances. Josie thought her daughter-in-law would be the perfect person to look over her and her husbands nest egg. The couple had saved their entire lives for a comfortable retirement. Instead, Josie was faced with over two years of court battles and rulings, until finally the judge ordered monetary restitution. Josie was able to advocate for herself but not everyone is that fortunate. Older adults in situations of abuse or neglect rely on others to be their voice, ACHIEVA works to be that voice. ACHIEVA/The Arc of Beaver has a partnership with the Beaver County Office on Aging and has investigated over 400 reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation during each of the last three years. Any person who has reasonable cause to believe that an older adult needs protective services may file a report. Here are a few red flags that can be signs of problems to report:

Depleted funds without reason Someone accessing bank records, credit cards, funds Medications lasting too long, narcotics disappearing Dirty dishes from meals, food given but never eaten, shopping not being needed to buy more food Bruises, withdrawn behaviors, not being permitted to have unannounced visits Always sleeping during attempts to call

*Older Adult Protective Services is anonymous. Names, dates and details for this article were altered to protect Josies real identity.

Waiting List Reduction ACHIEVA Family Trust Social Entrepreneurship SustainabilityACHIEVA has begun to execute a five-year marketing and promotional plan targeting three groups: attorneys, service providers and family members of people with disabilities. Through this plan, ACHIEVA will be able to better educate families and individuals of the benefits of special needs trusts through print, radio and television advertisement.

ACHIEVA Family Trust will also distribute high quality, targeted materials such as brochures and DVDs to distribute to attorneys, professionals and families at conferences, meetings and through electronic media.

Under this plan, ACHIEVA foresees 1,500 additional beneficiaries will join ACHIEVA Family Trust.

The expansion of ACHIEVAs Bridgeville Pallet facility is complete. Construction of this project started in mid July 2013 and was completed by early November 2013. Construction work included: a 2,500 square foot building expansion, 5,300 square foot of covered storage, doubling the paved storage and parking areas to 5,700 square yards, a 325 linear foot retaining wall, foundation and utilities, a new kiln, upgraded electrical service, complete new fire suppression system and new fire alarm system.

In February 2014, a new gang saw was installed and is currently in operation. Other equipment included: a new air compressor with relocated air lines, rehab of existing dust collector and connection to new equipment and larger high efficiency gas fired pallet treatment kiln.

As a result of the Capital Campaign, ACHIEVA launched A Home of My Own in December 2013. A Home of My Own offers person-centered planning for people with disabilities and their families, making the dream of having a home of their own a reality. To date, ACHIEVA is working with 40 individuals and their families, with 22 being closer to their end goal of living independently apart from the family home.

Through this program, ACHIEVA has also established a network, linking families to others in the same situation and providing opportunities for families to meet and discuss their goals and options.

ACHIEVA went through a comprehensive sustainability audit to identify conservation opportunities. The audit revealed roofs, windows, doors, lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) in need of repair. The most urgent projects were identified as:

Replacing deteriorated roofs with energy efficient, environmentally friendly roofs

Installing new windows, doors and insulation to tighten the envelope

    Changing lighting to high-efficiency products

Update and install HVAC systems to Energy Star rated units

It is estimated these projects will save $117,000 in energy costs each year.

    Ensure Your Legacy

Here are two simple ways to name ACHIEVA in your estate plans.

First, you can include us in your will. To include ACHIEVA in your will, you may use the following statement in your will or codicil:

I give, devise and bequeath to ACHIEVA, a Pennsylvania not-for-profit corporation, with offices presently located at 711 Bingham Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203, the sum of $ .Second, you may list ACHIEVA as a beneficiary in your insurance polices. To do so, ask your employer or insurance agent for a copy of your insurance beneficiaries form. You may then list ACHIEVA as a beneficiary. You will likely need our Federal Tax ID number 25-1505216. You or your estate may receive a tax deduction when the policy is executed.

If you have already included us in your estate plans, please let us know by contacting Jamie Rhoades via email: [email protected] or 412.995.5000 x526, so that we may properly recognize your gift.

  • Ensure Your Legacy

Here are two simple ways to name ACHIEVA in your estate plans.

    Thank You, ACHIEVA

    33

    Dear ACHIEVA,

We would like to thank you for your kindness in granting Jacob funding from the residual

account of ACHIEVA Family Trust. With that money, Jacob had the opportunity to

attend an overnight camp specially designed for children and teens with complex

health conditions. Jacob is limited by his health issues, but this camp allowed him to

participate like every other child. He was able to take part in camp activities to the best

    of his ability.

As parents, we want the best for our children and this camp allowed Jacob to safely

experience activities that we could only dream about. We were worried that Jacob

might have a tough time away from home like any childs first time away from mom

and dad. Jacob laid our fears to rest the first night, when he told us, mom and dad go

home and Jacob stay here. We knew he was medically safe and happy to have new

    friends and new adventures.

My son was accepted for who he is, a warm and wonderful boy who loves to play and

help others. Thank you for the opportunity, this has been a dream come true for us.

Please know that the person who cannot express these things, Jacob, would love to

show just what this opportunity means to him. I know he will proudly show you all the

great places and activities he has experienced thanks to your generous grant.

    Our Greatest Sincerity,Amy & Jerre

  • ACHIEVA Is Creating Jobs!

Employment for people with disabilities has been a continuous concern within the disability community. In 2013, *17.6 percent of people with a disability were employed. In contrast, the employment population for those without a disability was 64 percent. There was little change in the jobless rate for people with a disability from 2012 to 2013, while the rate for those without a disability declined. Additionally, employed people with a disability were more likely to be self-employed than those without a disability.

ACHIEVAs vocational supports exist to combat these numbers and give people with disabilities the opportunity to have gainful employment. ACHIEVAs latest efforts include a partnership with Giant Eagle. Working with Giant Eagles HR Business Partner for Market District and GetGo, Jeremy Shapira, ACHIEVA hired a Career Transition Liaison (CTL). The CTL works with Giant Eagle staff to create and promote opportunities for individuals with various disabilities to become productive employees and contributors within the Giant Eagle corporation.

With this partnership, the CTL tours Giant Eagle facilities, including a variety of retail locations, distribution centers and Giant Eagles fresh food production facility to gain an understanding of the internal structure of Giant Eagle, its corporate culture and hiring processes. Information taken from this process will be used to develop recommendations for how Giant Eagle can excel in its ability to hire, retain and promote people with disabilities. These recommendations will be delivered to Giant Eagles executive team for hiring considerations throughout the company.

Through this initiative, Giant Eagle plans to hire new team members with disabilities for diverse positions, including entry level and skilled positions.
