1.1 INTRODUCTION

Congratulations you made a great choice, you chose to study online…

We will look at some of the benefits of learning online later, but first, welcome to your course.

I am really looking forward to meeting you all and getting started. I am here to facilitate your

learning but you are going to be the protagonist! So, let’s take a look at your objectives for

this unit.

1.1.1 OBJECTIVES

In this unit you will:

Become familar with the course layout

Discuss the benefits of online learning

Share tips for online learning

1.1.2 A GUIDE TO YOUR COURSE

Your course is divided into MODULES

How long is a module?

Each module is divided into UNITS and each unit takes approximately one week to

complete (this is based on 3/4 hours of study a week, but depends on individual learners.

Some of you may need less time and some of you may need more time.)

Page 6: Aceenglish module 1

6

How will I learn English?

At the beginning of each unit you will see your OBJECTIVES.

You will complete a variety of activities, individual and in pairs/groups to achieve your

objectives.

These activities will practise the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

You will use a variety multimedia to achieve your objectives.

BUT…

I’m not very confident with technology…

Don’t worry! There will always be instructions and/or a video tutorial to help you.

Where is my teacher?

I am always around. You can contact me whenever you have a question or problem and

I will reply as soon as I can. You will also have two live classes a week with me.

I can’t attend class…

It’s not a problem. You can watch the recording.

Did I achieve my objectives?

At the end of each unit you will complete a self-assessment questionnaire and discuss

your answers with your teacher. Then you will make a personal action plan for further

study…

I need more practice…

At the end of the module you will find more activites

I want to do something more challenging…

Have a look at the activities

Learning is very personal, we all have different learning styles and preferences. Some of

us work quickly and some of us need more time, some of us love speaking, some of us

are more reluctant. Some of us like reading, others prefer writing…

Everyone is welcome here and I look forward to working with you all.

1.3 TIPS FOR ONLINE LEARNING

In 1.2 we looked at the benefits of online learning. Online learning can be a great

experience but it is important to remember a few things…

Look at my TOP TIPS

Do you remember how to use THE IMPERATIVE in English?

Don’t procastinate!

Be proactive!

You can use the imperative form to give an order, a warning or advice

To form the imperative, use the infinitive of the verb without 'to':

"Be proactive!"

To make a negative imperative, put "do not" or "don't" before the verb:

"Don't procrastinate!"

The imperative can be used for all subjects

Look at my TOP TIPS again and continue the list with your ideas.

Use the imperative…

1.4 WHAT KIND OF LEARNER ARE YOU?

1.4.1 Different learning styles

Learning styles group common ways that people learn. Everyone has a mix of learning

styles. Some people have a dominant learning style.

Why do I need to recognise my learning style?

If you recognise your learning style, you can choose activities that are best for you, and

you can improve the quality of your learning…

Watch this video about three different learning styles.

Is this how you learn?

Can you think of any more learning styles?

Talking about how often we do something.

Look at the sentences above…
