Picturing Endangered Species In this unit, you will learn

about endangered and threatened species around the world as you experiment with grid system drawing, sketching, charcoal drawing, and mural making.

Guiding Cultural Connections Questions What are the leading causes that threaten species? Across the globe, are the leading causes the same? What are the issues of greatest concern?

Guiding Art Questions How would you describe a common feature of

abstract art? Name 3 drawing techniques. How might depth be created? Name 3 spatial devices which can be used to create

the appearance of space What is value?

Picturing Endangered Species What is the Endangered Species Act?

• ESA was passed in 1973 to protect at-risk plant and animal species• There are two categories “Endangered” or “Threatened”• Endangered: danger of becoming extinct• Threatened: likely to become endangered in the future

• Another way to think about extinction!!

Picturing Endangered Species How does a Species get “Listed?”

• The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), a bureau of the Department of the Interior is responsible for listing, delisting, and reclassifying the species.

• When the FWS announces a proposal to the Federal Register, the public is then allowed to comment on the proposal for a set period of time, letting the FWS know whether or not they agree or disagree with the proposal.

• The process can take a year or longer.

Picturing Endangered Species How many Species are Protected by the ESA?

• As of May 31, 2000• 1051 animal species protected• 368 are listed as Endangered in the US, 518 in foreign countries• 128 are listed as Threatened in the US, 37 in foreign countries

• There are 738 plant species protected• 593 in the US, 1 foreign• 142 Threatened in the US and 2 foreign

• A total of 1789 species are protected by the ESA

Picturing Endangered Species In What Other Ways are Endangered Species Protected?

• Local laws enforced by state governments and state departments• Groups of species are protected by specific acts such as the Marine

Mammal Protection Act• Foreign countries have protection laws for their endangered species• Endangered species are protected on international levels as well (ie. The

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an agreement between 150 countries that have agreed not to trade the species on the endangered lists

• Google US Fish and Wildlife Service for more info on the Endangered species Program

Picturing Endangered SpeciesVocabulary (Use Exercise Sheet)

abstract1.a style of art that refers to various types of 20th-century avant-garde art;

2. also refers to images that have been so altered from their realistic/natural appearance; they have been simplified to their basic contours/forms;

3. art is often based upon a recognizable object, which is then simplified to show some purer underlying form, sometimes removing any references to recognizable objects

Drawing techniques: different ways of drawing, such as hatching, stippling, contour, blending, or shading

hatching—drawing repeating parallel lines to create a texture or value cross hatching—drawing repeated crossing lines to create a texture or value contour—drawing the outlines of a shape blending—smudging to create a texture/value shading—creating various gradations of value of a color

Picturing Endangered Speciesspacean element of visual arts; the area above, below, around, and within a piece of artwork. The illusion of depth or space on a flat surface is created through the use of the following techniques: overlapping shapes and forms, use of size, detail, value, color, and linear perspective

spatial devicesmethods used to create the appearance of space in an artwork; foreground/middle ground/background, overlap, placement, size, detail, color, foreground—the area of an artwork that appears closest middle ground—the area between the foreground and background background—the area of an artwork that appears farthest away: a way of showing space

color value—the lightness or darkness of a color horizon line—based on the artist’s eye level, a line where sky meets earth overlap—partly cover another part
