Organizational Approach: ACD believes internationally accepted principle that development is not theoretical exercise to

transform a certain amount of money into some other commodity or some more money.

Development is about people and deals with people’s lives. Hence, ACD adopted a right based

approach to achieve, by providing an effective framework for a holistic analysis of development

including its social, cultural, political and economic dimension and effective tools for designing

result-oriented, empowering and sustainable development strategies. Consequently, ACD

through its right based approach integrates human rights of confidential communities in the

development process to effectively target human freedom. In this regard, ACD organizes and

mobilizes the vulnerable confidential communities to make a collective voice. Advocating and

lobbying on issues and concerns of privileged communities are main focus of ACD to achieve at

the set destination. ACD while struggling for survival rights of ignored communities, develop

and strengthen relations. While, capacity building workshops, consultative meetings, seminars,

awareness campaigns, media campaigns, organizing rallies and developing linkages with all

stakeholders including local communities, government authorities are basic tools used by ACD

to achieve the objectives.

ACD Major Programs

Social Mobilization (SM): Social mobilization is an approach and tool that enables people to organize for collective action,

by pooling resources and building unity required to resolve common problems and work

towards community advancement. In this regard, ACD facilitates a process that empowers

women and men to organize their own democratically self-governing groups or community

organizations which enable them to initiate and control their own personal and collective

development. ACD initiates processes through which communities are sensitized for a positive

change and wellbeing. ACD uses social mobilization as tool to motivate marginalized, ignorant

and poor communities to bring them in mainstream.

Social Mobilization is aimed at creating a major thrust to solve problems of national magnitude

by promoting participation of all possible sectors and civil society, mobilization of local

resources, use of indigenous knowledge and enhancement of people’s creativity and

productivity through mass campaign.

Institutional Development: Institutional development is the key initiative to strengthening

any organization. ACD take serious efforts to strengthen the organization by adopting different

tools and approaches. Capacity building of its office-bearers, volunteers and staff are major

intervention by which ACD ensure building capacity of its staff towards betterment of privileged

communities. Besides, ACD becomes attentive towards developing strategies, and policies.

Capacity Building: Enhancing skills and expertise are essential to build a society freed from

unfair power distribution, injustice, inequality, and discrimination. To achieve the destination,

capacity building of every segment of society deems necessary and considering the importance

of capacity building, ACD focus more on developing skills of its staff, Volunteers and community

that will enable them to carry out activities in proper way and this will also make activities more

Page 11: ACD profile

effective and result based. ACD in this regard organizes managerial, organizational and

technical training workshops. These training workshops range from fundamental principles of

organization, leadership skills, community management skills, technical knowledge and disaster

management are major subjects with various sub-topics of training workshops.

Gender Empowerment: Almost all societies of the past have been patriarchal, meaning in

effect that women have had second-class status. Women continued to be treated in many

respects as second class persons during 18th century. Nevertheless, same is practicing yet in

our society. Women in remote areas of Sindh do not have access to basic education, health and

income generating activities. They do not enjoy complete range of basic rights of survival. There

is unequal participation of women and children in normal domestic affairs and there is hugely

unequal access to assets such as livestock, land, health and education. Considering the

importance of the gender, ACD is striving to address the issues of gender inequality in order to

reduce poverty and marginalization of women and children. Together with building assets of

women, the ACD aims to bring changes in attitudes, roles and behavior that are essential for

gender equality to be achieved.

Human Rights: The term ‘human rights’ refers to those rights that have been recognized by

the global community in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United

Nations (UN) Member States in 1948, and in subsequent international legal instruments binding

on states. The Universal Declaration is a landmark document. It recognizes that a world in

which all human beings enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of belief, freedom from want and

freedom from fear is the highest aspiration of all humankind. The global community recognized

that it is equally essential to ensure that economic or social power does not dispossess the less

powerful of their ability to meet their basic needs. In addition, international human rights law

obliges states to take positive steps to ensure the realization of human rights, with a particular

obligation to assist the most disadvantaged or vulnerable sectors of society. However, every

child, woman and man is entitled to enjoy his or her human rights simply by virtue of being

human. It is this universality of human rights. Human rights are premised on the recognition of

the equal worth and dignity of every human being regardless of any individual characteristic

such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin,

Page 12: ACD profile

property, birth or other status. This gives rise to the twin fundamental principles of equality and

non-discrimination. Considering the violation and exploitation of human rights of privileged,

ACD initiated to raise voice against this exploitation and unite privileged communities on one

platform to live a life with dignity, respect and honor.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Research (MER): All development activities need a careful and

watchful eye which implementation process proper and resulted oriented. ACD ensures

participation of communities in monitoring process by holding regular meetings and community

conferences. Beginning from field dairies monitoring network is spread up to periodic review

workshop held on each quarter and Board of Directors’ meeting. In these meetings and

workshops various issues are discussed at length and discussion is incorporated with objectives

and planning. It strengthens the system and staff capacity and capability. ACD’s MER unit plays

an active and essential role in organization in order to achieve the targets and to review overall

performance of the organization. It performance regular monitoring and reporting of all

project, management, organization and imitations of inter as well as external evaluations.

Through these tools, techniques and strategies MER presents a true picture of the state of

organizational affairs. The variations are recorded and analysis of causes is made accordingly.

Lesson learnt are identified for future planning. MER provides continuous feedback on the

impact of ACD’s work on the management as well as other development partners. These all

activities show the importance of sections role. MER is like a transparency and litmus paper for

an organization through which every activity could be seen accurately.

Exit Strategy: ACD believes in the capacity building of the community organizations it is working with, the

staff implementing the programs and of the volunteers, to be able to tackle the causes of

poverty more effectively, more efficiently and in a sustainable way. The aim of ACD is to

eventually shift the responsibilities of the project over to the community organizations over a

number of years. It also means that over the years, the role of ACD will reduce and role of the

community will increase to the extent of taking over project activities and the management of

community development work by the Village Development Organizations of the villages.
