Accreditation DefinedExternal, independent review of ahealth care training program against nationally-accepted standards and its own policies, procedures, processes and outcomes (AAAHC)

Peer-reviewed, voluntary program evaluationPractice-based determination of adherence to National Standards Public recognition of excellenceNational acknowledgement of quality.

History of NNPRFTC2010: Convened as informal consortium in 2010 by first four FQHC-based postgraduate NP residency training programs across the country

2013: Identified accreditation as a goal early on and determined that there were no available existing sources of accreditation at the time; committed to developing program

2015: CHCI formally incorporated a new 501c3, the NNPRFTC to advance the postgrad NP residency and fellowship movement, including developing of accreditation program.

Website launched Dec 2015.

Accreditation review process active: programs under review; first reviews expected to be completed late summer/early fall 16.

Benefits of Accreditation - Public

Public: accreditation promotes the health, safety and welfare of society by assuring competent public health professionals.

Federal government / other public funding agencies: basis for determining eligibility for federally funded programs.

Foundations and other private funding sources; represents a highly desirable indicator of a programs quality and viability.

Prospective employers: provides assurance that curriculum covers essential skills and knowledge needed for todays jobs.

Prospective trainees: accreditation serves a consumer protection purpose. Provides assurance that the program has been evaluated and met accepted standards established by and with the profession.

Benefits of Accreditation Professional

Profession: advances the field by promoting standards of practice and advocating rigorous preparation.

NPs: involves practitioners in the establishment of standards and assures that educational requirements reflect the current training needs of the profession.

Graduates: promotes professional mobility and enhances employment opportunities in positions that base eligibility upon graduation from an accredited school or program.

Benefits of Accreditation Training Organizations

Governing organizations such as universities and hospitals: provides a reliable basis for inter- and intra-institutional cooperative practices, including admissions and transfer of credit.

Faculty and administrators: promotes ongoing self-evaluation and continuous improvement and provides an effective system for accountability.

School or program: accreditation enhances its national reputation and represents peer recognition.

Established postgraduate NP programs in USAt least one cohort of trainees completed 12 mo (1 year of training)

New postgraduate NP program in the US Program under development First year -- no trainees completed programProvisional accreditation shifts to accredited upon final review
