The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) will offer the first cer-tification examinations for the cardiology pharmacy and infec-tious diseases pharmacy specialties in fall 2018. Pharmacists who meet the eligibility criteria and successfully pass the rel-evant examination will earn the credentials of Board Certified Cardiology Pharmacist (BCCP) or Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (BCIDP). These two specialty certifica-tions were officially recognized as stand-alone specialties by BPS in February 2017.

As defined by the petitioning organizations, “Cardiology Pharmacy practice specializes in the delivery of direct patient care services by pharmacists as members of interprofes-sional healthcare teams, working to ensure the safe and effective use of medications in patients with cardiovascular disease. These specialists focus on disease prevention and treatment, including evidence-based medication use and related care that improve both short- and long-term out-comes for patients. Cardiology specialists practice across the spectrum of care, including ambulatory, acute and intensive care. Pharmacists in this practice review, analyze and monitor multifaceted clinical information to make reasoned decisions for patients with multiple comorbidities and highly complex mediation regimens.”

As defined by the petitioning organizations, “Infectious Diseases Pharmacy practice specializes in the use of microbi-ology and pharmacology to develop, implement, and monitor

drug regimens that incorporate the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of antimicrobials to optimize therapy for patients. The practice requires pharmacists to use clinical and evidence-driven knowledge to develop appropriate anti-microbial therapies to more rapidly resolve infections while decreasing adverse events, complications and resistance. The practice includes direct patient care provided through inter-professional health care teams, collaborative leadership of antimicrobial stewardship programs, education of health care providers, preventive services including immunizations, and advocacy for appropriate antimicrobial utilization. Specialty pharmacy practice in infectious diseases uniquely improves public health by optimizing antimicrobial potential in individ-ual patients and narrowing the resistance trends that occur in society by preventing progression of antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases.”

The two new specialties, together with geriatric pharmacy, which also became part of BPS in 2017, bring the total num-ber of recognized pharmacy specialties to 11 (Figure).

Applications for both Cardiology Pharmacy and Infectious Diseases Pharmacy examinations will open May 7, 2018. More information on the two specialties is available at www.bpsweb.org/bps-specialties/cardiology-pharmacy and www.bpsweb.org/bps-specialties/infectious-diseases-pharmacy, respectively.

A Message from the Editor

Dear Colleagues:

Articles in this issue of ACCP International Clinical Pharmacist highlight topics of importance to the advance-ment of clinical pharmacist credentials and clinical phar-macy practice.

The article titled “Cardiology and Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Certifications” reports on two new specialty certification examinations to be offered for the first time in fall 2018. Although pharmacists’ expertise in these specialty areas has been recognized by the Added Qualifications credential under the pharmacotherapy spe-cialty, beginning in 2018, pharmacists will hold the BCCP or BCIDP credential to recognize their competence in provid-ing advanced, specialized care in these areas.

The article titled “ACCP Launches a New Journal: JACCP” reports on the launch of a new journal that focuses on the practice of clinical pharmacy. Articles to be published in the journal will discuss advances in clinical pharmacy practice, including, but not limited to, education and training, care delivery models, credentialing and privileging, and patient outcomes. The journal will be the go-to resource for all prac-titioners, health care administrators, professional organiza-tions, health care policy-makers, and other stakeholders concerned with advancing pharmacy practice worldwide.

The Book Highlights department features the lat-est release from the Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program (PSAP): Infectious Diseases. Topics covered in this book are relevant to pharmacists providing care to patients with various infectious diseases in any practice setting.

Finally, as the deadline for abstract submission approaches, pharmacists are urged to share findings from their practice and clinical research to be presented at the upcoming 2018 ACCP Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy to be held October 20–23. Practicing pharma-cists, researchers, students and trainees, health care admin-istrators, and health care organization leaders from across the globe will converge in Seattle to learn about all matters related to clinical pharmacy practice. Abstract submission deadlines are outlined in the article titled “2018 Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy to Be Held in Seattle.”

Sincerely,

Wafa Y. Dahdal, Pharm.D.
