    Introduction

    y Organization: An Organization is a group of people voluntarily coming together to

    achieve the goals of the organization.

    y Management: Management is a process by which the objectives of the organization

    are achieved with the optimum utilization of the available resources

    in the quickest interval of time.

    y Manager: A manager is a person who accomplishes the objectives of the

    organization are achieved with the optimum utilization of the

    available resources in the quickest interval of time.

    y What is Accountability?

    y Accountability means responsibility to someone or for some activity.

    y Does Accountability dampens the sprit of discretionary judgment?

    y Yes1. when your going to threaten the manager with dire consequences if the project fails

    2. If you tell him your responsible for the loss, which might occur then he will not even

    move

    3. If you tell him that his salary will be cut if he brings losses because of his commissions

    and omissions then he will even quit the job and go

    y Accountability definitely dampens the enthusiasm to perform. It pulls you

    back ,it holds you back, it forces you to go slow.

    Case Studyy One entrepreneur wanted to appoint a General Manager for his establishment and conducted

    interviews.

    Finally he selected 2 potential candidates A and B.

    He gave them two options

    1. Go for the experienced 10 second level Managers (45 and above), and I

    will not bother you about the result because I am sure they will produce the results.If they dont I will take the blame on me.

    2.Go for the young 10 Managers (25 to 35) and you are accountable for the

    success of the business. I will hold you responsible for the loss.

    Manager A opted for option 1 and the Boss appointed him. For one year he was

    running it without much success.The reason is - no accountability he had nothing to prove nothing to achieve.

    As per the instructions of the Boss he has appointed experienced Managers and thought things will

    happen on its own. Every one worked hard but no new thinking, no new ideas, no enthusiasm, no

    aggression. They did not even try to find out the demands of the market and

    the end result was a big ZERO.

    y Then the boss wanted to try the other Manager B. Luckily for him he was

    available and has appointed him and gave him a free hand to appoint young

    Managers but fixed a very high target of turnover. Manager B was little nervous

    about the high target but still he was enthusiastic . He appointed 10 young

    Managers and started having meetings with them on a daily basis. He told themwhat to do and what not to do. He asked them to come out with new ideas to

    improve the sale. Every Friday they Saturday for 2 hours in the evening to discuss the

    development and to decide how to take it forward. Small targets were fixed for ever one

    and the same was slightly increased every month. All the time everyone stayed

    focused. There were few failures but everyone learnt quickly and took corrective

    measures immediately. After 6 months all their efforts started showing results. They wereexcited and started putting in more efforts. At the end of the year they were very close

    to the target and the Boss was happy.

    Conclusiony Experienced Managers could not achieve because they were travelling without any

    goal. They were running the business tension free without any accountability,without any challenge and without any target. They thought everything willhappen on its own.

    y Young Managers worked with a mission. The responsibility and the accountability

    was the driving force for them. Accountability and the target did not dampentheir enthusiasm instead they kindled their enthusiasm. They believed inthemselves and worked systematically and achieved success.

    y Accountability means responsibility. If you run away from responsibilities you will notsucceed. Accountability is a driving force for the strong minded people who will makethings happen. Weak minded people on the other hand will wait for things tohappen and when that does not happen they lose heart and eventually fail.

    y Strong minded people will think positively and work hard towards the goal.Accountability will only help them to stay focused and achieve.Weak minded people will think negatively and go slow, hesitate to act, afraid ofresults and ultimately fail. Accountability will threaten them, holds them back,pulls them down all the time and dampens their enthusiasm to perform.
