Your guarantee of accommodationAll first year undergraduate and postgraduate students are

GUARANTEED a place in University or University partner

accommodation provided you apply by 1 September 2010.

Please note before your application can be fully processed

you must have accepted an Unconditional firm offer to

study here.

Students with Conditional offers can still apply for

accommodation before their status changes to

Unconditional (usually when exam results are received or for

international students when the course deposit has beenpaid). Once your exam results and acceptance at the

University are confirmed, your accommodation application

will be processed. This guarantee excludes applications to

iQ Student Quarter - students without a firm offer can apply

to iQ Student Quarter immediately. If you don’t receive the

exam grades required to take up your place at iQ Student

Quarter, your deposit of £250 will be refunded.

Accreditation and code of standardsAll of the accommodation detailed in this brochure is

managed in accordance with the codes of practice

which exist to safeguard the interests of our

students. Accommodation owned and managed

by the University is registered and compliant with

Universities’ UK Code of Practice. The code sets out the

main elements of good management practice. It covers

health and safety, maintenance and repairs and relationships

between managers and student residents. It should also

assist residents in understanding both the standards and

procedures applying to their accommodation and their

obligations as tenants. The full code can be viewed at

www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/acop.

Accommodation owned or managed by our partners will be

managed in accordance with the ANUK Code of Practice

(Accreditation Network UK) or through a management

agreement with the University. This will ensure that

standards of service provision will as a minimum comply

with either of the above codes.

LocationsConstantine Court and Horlock Court are based on campus.

All other accommodation is a short distance away

(approximately a ten minute walk) from the main campuses

and a frequent and free campus bus service is provided

throughout term time. The free bus runs Monday to Friday

and stops at all of the accommodation locations and main

campus buildings.

Our partnersEddie Colman, John Lester, Matthias and Bramall Courts

are owned/managed by Campus Living Villages in

partnership with the University. Campus Living Villages

specialises in providing safe, supportive and exciting student

accommodation. As one of the largest providers

internationally, it has an established track record and

relationships with around 50 institutions in the United States,

United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

iQ Student QuarterOur other partner accommodation is iQ Student Quarter.

iQ has accommodation across the UK including Bristol,

Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Leeds and Nottingham. There are 541 ensuite bedrooms available (including large

deluxe rooms) at this modern purpose built facility. Four, five

and six bedroom flats are available with shared kitchen and

lounge facilities. There is also a large common room with

Sky TV provided for all residents.

For further information and to make an application

please contact iQ directly at www.loveiq.co.uk or

telephone +44( 0)161 736 6501.

How to choosethe right accommodation - your preferences and requirementsYour accommodation and living experience are a crucial part

of your University experience and we want you to have the

best time possible. The majority of students will stay with

us for at least nine months of the year and many students

choose to stay with us for the whole time they are studyingat University. To make the most of your accommodation

experience it is really important for you to make the right

choice when you apply.

UndergraduatesThe majority of our residents are new and returning

undergraduates. Undergraduate accommodation is available

at Castle Irwell, Constantine Court, Horlock Court, Bramall

Court, Eddie Colman Court and iQ Student Quarter. All

undergraduate contracts are for 40 or 42 weeks. All of our

new first year students are placed with other first years so

you will meet lots of friends in the same situation.

Postgraduate accommodationPostgraduate accommodation is available at Castle Irwell,

John Lester Court, Matthias Court and iQ Student Quarter

and all contracts are 50 weeks long.

The postgraduate courses (PGT) are 52 weeks long – many

students find the 50 week contract is perfectly adequate but

some students may require an accommodation extension.

This may be an extension for two or three weeks, or it may

be that you are taking an academic extension to complete

your dissertation and require either a four or six month

accommodation extension.

If you apply to Matthias Court and Castle Irwell we willguarantee accommodation for the 52 weeks of your course

and one academic extension if required (either 4 or 6

months depending on your course). This guarantee can only

be given provided you confirm your requirement for an

accommodation extension at least eight weeks before your

contract is due to end.

In other accommodation we are unable to guarantee an

extension, and so if you think that you may need to stay

longer than 50 weeks, please choose Matthias Court or

Castle Irwell.

We will try to meet requests for shorter extensions wherever

possible but cannot guarantee this.

The extension will be charged at the same rent as your initial

contract.

We will contact you for confirmation of your possible

extension requirements approximately three months before

your contract ends, but it is your responsibility to confirm

any extension, in writing, and by the deadline. Unfortunately

if you do not let us know that you need to stay in the

accommodation by the deadline, we cannot guarantee that

this will be possible.

Nurses

We place nursing students together as study and work

patterns usually involve shifts and longer contracts.

Most nursing students require a 52 week contract.

There are a small number of courses starting in March –

if we have rooms available at that time we will pleased to

offer you accommodation.

Family accommodationThis year we are offering families (students with children) a

small number of 2 and 3 bedroom properties at Waterside

Village – located next door to iQ Student Quarter. We

believe the additional space and gardens will be a benefit

for students with children. Families can apply for this

accommodation directly through our online application

process. Additional family accommodation will be available

at Matthias Court.

Returning studentsReturning students are welcome to apply for

accommodation and many students choose to stay with us

throughout their time at University.

Group applicationsWe can accept group applications at all of the

accommodation choices – please submit your applications

together and include the names of the other students you

wish to share with. All students in a group application must

have the same contract period. It would be helpful if you all

provide your student ID numbers when applying.

Mature studentsIf you are a new student but will be older when you start

University and would prefer to live with returning or

postgraduate students when you arrive, please indicate this

on your online application form.

Erasmus and exchange accommodationThe University of Salford works with many international

partners and we are delighted to welcome students who are

studying or working at the University at different times of

the year and often for shorter periods. We know it can be

expensive if you have to buy items for your house or flat

when you arrive, especially if you are staying for a short

period. We have recently introduced special Erasmus and

exchange houses which have more equipment in the

kitchens and include bedding. This will mean that when you

arrive you will need to buy some food but your kitchen and

bedroom should have all the items you need. The houses

which are especially for Erasmus and exchange students are

based at Castle Irwell which has lots of sports facilities and

green fields.

Our houses at Castle Irwell have eleven bedrooms and you

will share bathroom and kitchen facilities with other Erasmus

students. Erasmus and exchange students will be given

contracts based on the period of the exchange programme

they have accepted. We will do our best to offer short term

accommodation to all incoming Erasmus and exchange

students, however rooms are limited so please apply as soon

as you receive confirmation.

Applying for international placementsand exchangesIf there is a possibility of an exchange programme on your

course but you will not receive confirmation until later in the

academic year (usually second and third semester

placements) you can still apply for some of the

accommodation choices. These choices are Castle Irwell,

Constantine, Horlock, Bramall and Matthias Courts.

Students considering an exchange programme should not

apply to iQ Student Quarter, John Lester or Eddie Colman

Courts as you will not be released from a contract without

finding a replacement student first.

If you have already booked accommodation or are already in

residence please do not worry that you will not be able to

take part in the Erasmus programme (or other exchange

scheme) if an opportunity becomes available later in the

academic year. We will need to receive either an email or

letter from your tutor confirming that you are taking part

and the date it will start. We will then release you from your

contract the weekend before the placement starts. Please

note this only applies to students in University owned

accommodation – Castle Irwell, Constantine, Horlock,

Bramall and Matthias Courts.

Care leaversThe accommodation online application form includes a

question for students who may have spent time in foster

care, semi independent living or residential care homes. If

you tick this box we will treat this information in confidence,

and will contact you to discuss whether you may benefit

from any further support the University can offer and if you

require accommodation on a 52 week basis.

The Care Leaver Support Co-ordinator can help you with

issues such as finance worries, study skills, welfare, careers,

part time work, counselling and many other areas. You may

not need access to all of the support available to you, or any

at all, but we can help you to make the right choices – from

application to graduation.

To talk to the specialist Care Leaver Support Co-ordinator

you can call Student Life on +44 (0)161 295 0023 or email

the Care Leaver Support Co-ordinator, Ellie Wharfe at

[email protected]. Ellie can be contacted

by phone at the Student Life number above. Alternatively

you can visit the web pages for care leaver support at

www.advice.salford.ac.uk/page/careleaver. You can arrange

an initial meeting with the Care Leaver Support Co-ordinator

even before you have applied to the University and to

discuss the best accommodation for you.

Quieter accommodationThis year we will be introducing quieter accommodation

for students who prefer a more peaceful environment. This accommodation will be available at Castle Irwell,

Horlock Court, Constantine Court and John Lester Court.

If you are an individual who prefers a more peaceful

atmosphere, or someone who is easily distracted by the

noise of others, then you may wish to request to be

allocated within our designated quieter accommodation

area at Castle Irwell, Horlock Court, Constantine Court

and John Lester Court.

Students living in quieter accommodation are asked to

adhere to certain conditions, which are slightly different

from those operating at the rest of the accommodation

areas, these include:

Any noise from TVs/computers, or music that is played in

bedrooms should be kept to a low level at all times in the

day and night (‘low level’ is categorised as being not

significantly heard from outside of the bedroom).

No music systems can be set up or played in the communal

dining area.

Residents should not entertain large numbers of guests/

visitors at any one time.

Whilst we cannot guarantee noise will always be kept to a

minimum, it is the intention that the quieter accommodation

will be an opportunity for us to place like minded people

together, and try to create a more harmonious livingenvironment for our residents.

This success of this option is dependent upon the

consideration and co-operation of all residents.

Adapted accommodationAccommodation adapted for wheelchair users is available at

Constantine Court, John Lester Court and Eddie Colman

Court. Depending on your requirements suitable

accommodation may also be available at iQ Student Quarter.

Accommodation with a fully DDA compliant kitchen is

available at Constantine Court. This kitchen includes

adjustable cupboards, sink and worktops plus fridges and

freezers which can be easily accessed by wheelchair users.

Deaf Alerter provision is available at all accommodation

choices. Please advise us of your requirements on your

application and we can advise you of the most suitable

accommodation. On the accommodation application form there is a detailed

section for you to tell us about your requirements – a

member of our team will contact you to discuss the most

suitable accommodation. We also work closely with Student

Life’s Disability Service to ensure our residents have access to

other support available. Other reasonable adjustments or

extra provision can be made as long as we know what you

need. If you would like to speak to a member of our

Disability Service Team to find out more about the support

available please telephone +44 (0) 161 295 0023.

SmokingAll accommodation is non smoking and smoking is not

allowed in any part of the accommodation. As some of our

accommodation has many floors, students can indicate on

their online application form (all locations excluding

iQ Student Quarter) if they are a smoker and would prefer

to live on a lower floor to be nearer to the smoking shelters.

Please note this will depend on room availability and the

timing of your application.

Choice of room sizesThis year we are offering students choosing Bramall and

Matthias Courts the opportunity to choose a standard, large

or extra large room. This can be beneficial if you are

bringing lots of possessions with you or if you are studying

on a course and have a lot of materials and equipment.

Useful information• Standard accommodation provides shared bathroom

facilities (showers, toilets and washbasins)

• Ensuite accommodation provides a toilet, washbasin and

shower facility within a study bedroom. Some flats at

Matthias Court also have a bath fitted with an overhead

shower

• All bedrooms are for single occupancy with the exception

of Couple and Family Accommodation

• All accommodation (with the exception of Couple and

Family Accommodation) has a kitchen and dining facilities

which students will share

• All kitchens have microwave, electric oven and grill, fridge,

freezer, table and chairs or breakfast bar and stools

• All accommodation locations have laundry facilities

(washing and drying machines) and outside drying

facilities are available at some lo cations

• All locations have on-site office, maintenance and security

support

• All accommodation is allocated as mixed sex unless you

request single sex accommodation on your application

9

Other considerations :Some of the things you also need to consider before

you apply are:

Location – do you want to be as close as possible to where

the majority of your teaching will take place? If so find out

which buildings/campus your course will be based at.

Ensuite - is this essential? Ensuite is the most expensive

accommodation – you could save money by choosing

standard accommodation.

Contract length – how long is your course? Make sure you

choose the right contract as you will have to pay your rent

for the full accommodation period.

Making friends – do you want to meet lots of friends and

live in a large group or would you prefer a smaller group

while you find your feet in your first year?

Quieter accommodation – in our Undergraduate

accommodation the majority of our residents are 18 or 19

years old and living independently for the first time.

Residences can be noisy and exciting and we know this

doesn’t suit everyone. Students looking for a quieter lifestyle

and environment can apply for quiet accommodation -

available at Horlock Court, Constantine Court, Castle Irwell

and John Lester Court.

Bringing a car – you will have to pay to park at iQ Student

Quarter, Horlock and Constantine Courts, and if you want

to use the University car parks there is also a daily charge so

think carefully about whether you need to bring your car

with you. Remember there is free bus available Monday to

Friday and this stops at all the accommodation choices.

Budget – can you afford it? Before you apply look carefully

at our fees table so you understand your commitment. Our

rents are some of the cheapest in the country but it is

important to look at your budget first.

Local students – you are very welcome to apply for

accommodation. We ask students who could commute to

ensure they are fully committed to living with us for the full

year before making an application. By accepting a contract

you are committing to paying the full rent for the whole

contract period.

Single sex accommodationAll of our accommodation is offered on a mixed sex basis.

If you would prefer single sex accommodation please

indicate this on your application form.

Catering

All of our accommodation is offered on a self catering basis.

A microwave, electric oven, fridge and freezer are provided

in all of the accommodation choices. There are lots of places

to eat on campus or local cafes/sandwich shops close to all

of the accommodation choices.

For further information on what is

available please visit our website.

Resident Life Support OfficersResident Life Support Officers provide additional support at

Castle Irwell, Horlock and Constantine Courts. They provide

a warm welcome to all new residents through a range of

welcome and induction activities to help students settle into

their accommodation. Sometimes problems, large and small,

arising during the first few weeks of a new term can easily

be blown out of proportion. New students can feel

overwhelmed by the many new experiences they have to

deal with. This can particularly be the case for international

students. The Resident Life Support Officers play a vital role

during out of hours when they will provide support if you

have worries or problems. They will arrange social activities

and encourage all students to live together, thus promoting

a harmonious living environment.

Resident Life Support Officers work out of office hours

during the evenings and weekends on a rota basis.

Residential Assistant (RA) –John Lester, Eddie Colman, Bramalland Matthias Courts

The Resident Support Team exists to help provide residentswith a positive and harmonious environment in which to

live, and Resident Assistants are a key component of the

management and leadership of Campus Living Villages.

Being part of the Residential Assistant Team means making

a difference, working with an exciting and energetic group

of people. RAs do everything from organising social events

to helping residents through difficult times and they all

undertake a variety of training programmes to provide the

knowledge and skills to competently perform in their role.

RAs play a significant role in developing policy and

procedures, as well as providing leadership of the social,

sporting and volunteering activities. Most importantly RAs

help you to connect to all the fun activities that occur year

round in the Village.

As our accommodation is fully occupied throughout the

majority of the year it is not always possible to see inside all

of the accommodation locations. If you are interested in a

particular location we recommend you contact the site

reception in advance by telephone or email to see if there

may be an empty bedroom we can show you.

University tourIf you would like to visit our accommodation there are

several ways you can do this. There is a University tour

every Wednesday that includes a visit to Castle Irwell

Student Village and iQ Student Quarter. To book a tour,

visit our website at w ww.salford.ac.uk and follow the link

‘Visit the University’.

School and faculty open daysIf you are attending a school or faculty open day the

programme may also include a visit to the showhouse at

Castle Irwell and iQ Student Quarter. Please check, as all

open day programmes vary. These visits can be booked in

the same way as the University tour (see above).

Parents’ sessionsWe offer several parents’ sessions (in the evening)

throughout the year which include a visit to Castle Irwell,

places on these events can be booked in the same way as

the University tour (see above).

August and September viewingsWeekend viewings are available in August and September

and further details will be emailed to all students nearer the

time. Our open weekends allow students and parents to seethe accommodation more closely and meet the staff to

answer any questions.

Depending on the time of year it may only be possible to

show you accommodation which is occupied by students.

Emergency accommodationUnfortunately we do not have any emergency

accommodation. All students must book and confirm

acceptance of an offer of accommodation before arriving at

the University of Salford. This is especially important for

international students who may arrive overnight. A list of

hotels can be found on our website for students requiring

temporary accommodation - any hostel or hotel

accommodation must be paid for by students.

New student WelcomeActivities are scheduled for new students arriving in

September 2010 and January 2011. Some of the activities

are specifically for international students including

information sessions and opportunities to meet with other

Viewing University and University partneraccommodation

new students. During Welcome, there will be staff and

existing students on hand to answer any questions you may

have. You will also be able to open a bank account, have a

tour of the University and Manchester and take part in social

activities. Other Welcome events are open to all new

students and help you meet new students and find your

feet. You will receive full details nearer to your arrival – the

University’s Get Ready website is an essential website for all

new students: www.getready.salford.ac.uk.

New student Welcome runs from 13 September, starting

with International Programme.

General Induction, Registration and check in run from

20 September (International students can register from13 September).

Teaching starts week beginning 27th September.

Arrival datesCastle Irwell, Horlock Court, Constantine Court, John Lester

and Eddie Colman, Bramall and Matthias Courts – all

students can move in from Monday 13 September. The only

exception are nursing students whose contract starts on 17

September. Students who are based in the UK are welcome

to move in from 13 September but may find the campus is

particularly quiet as not all campus services will be fully

operational. We recommend UK based students arrive

from Friday 17 September.

iQ Student QuarterThe contract at iQ Student Quarter starts on Friday 17

September. Students who have signed a contract and paid

their first term’s rent can move into their accommodation

early any day from Monday 13 September but the additional

nights should be paid for on arrival. Please contact iQ

Student Quarter directly to confirm your arrival date if you

need to arrive before 17 September.

Early arrivals before 13 SeptemberAll September 2010 contracts start on Monday 13

September (except iQ Student Quarter and Nurses’ contracts

which start on 17 September) and the majority of students

will not be required to be at the University before this date.

If you need to move into your accommodation earlier

because your course has an earlier start date please email

your accommodation choice to request an early arrival.

We will do our best to help you but this is not guaranteed

due to summer conferences and refurbishment

programmes. Please note any additional nights prior to 13

September will incur a charge. Please do not arrive before 13

September without prior arrangement because we do not

have emergency accommodation.

Accommodation for students startingacademic programmes at other timesof the yearWe recognise that not all courses start in September as the

University offers programmes which start at various times in

the year, including January, February and March. All students

are welcome to apply for accommodation regardless of

when their course starts and if we have rooms available we

will always offer these students accommodation. It is always

worth putting in an application at later times in the year.

Our accommodation contracts are based on the majority of

course lengths but we realise that there are exceptions. If

you are studying for a course that is much longer or shorter

in length than the contracts available please tell us what you

require when you apply. On the online application form

there is a question ‘Do you have any other information you

would like to tell us?’ – this will create a text box where you

can type in the dates you require accommodation. There is

also a Welcome Programme in late January – for further

details please see our Get Ready website: www.getready.

salford.ac.uk. This website provides information on all

aspects of preparing for and arriving at our University

including Welcome activities and arranging airport transfers.

Castle Irwell Student Village, Horlock, Constantine,

Bramall and Matthias Courts

All rent payments should be made by direct debit each

term and a UK bank account will be required to do this.

Once your payment schedule has been agreed you will

receive a copy with the amounts and dates the payments

are due. The first payment for contracts starting on 13

September is 25 October 2010. Students who receive an

NHS bursary should state in section 12 of your direct debit

mandate they receive a bursary and will be able to pay in

monthly instalments. For students on a 12 months course,

this will mean there are ten equal payments.

If students do not open a UK bank account or agree to pay

by direct debit, then the full balance of accommodation fees

is due within two weeks of the contract start date. This

agreement is part of the terms and conditions when you

accept an offer of accommodation.

You can also pay your fees in full prior to or on arrival at the

University of Salford:

Online – prior to arrivalPayment may be made online via the University website

using the following link. You will need your University

any of the following methods:

• Cheque (payable to The University of Salford),

• Traveller’s cheques

• Debit/credit card

Private accommodationWe strongly recommend that all new students needing

accommodation choose University or University Partner

accommodation because it provides you with the support

you need as you adjust to life away from home. The weekly

rent in University or University Partner accommodation

includes your utilities and broadband which makes it easier

for you to budget as there are no hidden extras.

However, if you prefer to make your own arrangements

we strongly recommend that you use either Manchester

Student Homes or Salford City Council as your starting

point. Both organisations offer information on accredited

landlords and their properties. This means that the

properties and their landlords are registered, the properties

have been inspected and meet the necessary accreditation

standards.

Manchester Student Homes is jointly owned and managed

by Manchester Metropolitan University and the University

of Manchester and its free service is also available to

students at the University of Salford. It runs a compulsory

accreditation scheme for landlords and managing agents

of student properties. Please do not apply for University

accommodation if you are planning to move into private

accommodation shortly afterwards, as you will be held liable

for the full contract charge and you may prevent other

students from being offered a room.

T: +44 (0)161 275 7680

W: www.manchesterstudenthomes.com

Salford City Council run a voluntary landlord accreditation

scheme. All registered properties and landlords must comply

with statutory requirements and an additional code of

standards.

W: www.salford.gov.uk

A list of accredited properties can be found under living/

housing on their website.

accommodation includes:

• Use of your accommodation for the entire length of

your contract

Contract lengthsFor most undergraduates a 40 or 42 week contract is most

suitable. We appreciate that every student has individual

requirements and the table below details the available

contract options. In all cases you must read the terms and

conditions carefully before agreeing to accept a LEGALLY

BINDING CONTRACT. In accepting a contract you are

agreeing to abide fully by all the terms and conditions,

which includes paying the rent for the full contract period.

If you cannot see a contract that matches your requirements

please contact the Student Life Accommodation Services

Team for advice, before you apply. Our accommodation

contracts are based on the majority of course lengths but

we realise that there are exceptions. If you are studying for a

course that is much longer or shorter in length than the

contracts available please tell us what you require when you

apply. On the online application form there is a question ‘Do

you have any other information you would like to tell us?’ –

this will create a text box where you can type in the dates

you require accommodation. If rooms become available

after September we may have more flexibility for students

who apply for short term contracts. Please make a note of

the contract that is most suitable in relation to your course

and when you use the online booking form you will see a

drop down menu where you can select the correct contract.

Students who live in the local area should consider very

carefully whether they will commit to a full contract in

University or University Partner Accommodation.

8/3/2019 Accommodation Brochure 2010 - 2011 PDF Version

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/accommodation-brochure-2010-2011-pdf-version 16/19

Useful information for new and existing students

to refer to prior to making their application for

accommodation – the following information applies

to accommodation owned and managed by the

University; Castle Irwell, Horlock Court, Constantine

Court, Bramall Court and Matthias Court.

How do I apply for accommodation?

For further information and guidance on how to apply you can

find a full step by step list of instructions on our website on thehow to apply webpage.

I have forgotten the User ID and Password I used

last year.

When you go to the login page there is a forgotten password

option. When you choose this you will be asked to complete a

page that requires your student ID, name and date of birth. You

will also need to create a new password that will be memorable

to you. You should then click the reset button, this will take you

back to the login page where you will be reminded of the User

ID you have used to make a previous application/s. There you

need to enter the new password you created, when you do this

you will be directed to the application page.

Which accommodation should I choose?

We recommend you view all accommodation locations on our

website before deciding where you want to live, taking into

account the following:

• Cost and weekly budget

• Whether you prefer single or mixed sex accommodation

• Distance to your building of study. Some locations are closer

to the campus than others, there is a free bus that operates

during term-time from all of our accommodation sites to the

campus every 30 minutes

• How many people you prefer to share with

• The type of accommodation you prefer – there are various

types of accommodation in flats and houses

When making your application for accommodation you should

always select 3 different options in order of 1st, 2nd and 3rd

choice, this will help us to allocate you to a ‘best fit’.

Am I guaranteed any of my 3 preferences (choices)

of accommodation?

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee choices; we process

applications as we receive them and there may be limited

availability at the most popular locations. Where possible the

University will look to accommodate one of the preferences,

where it is not possible a 'best fit' will be offered.

I am an undergraduate and have chosen Salford as an

insurance choice, do I need to apply for accommodation

or should I wait?

If you have chosen Salford as your insurance we would advise

that you make your accommodation application as so on as you

can. We will only send you an offer of accommodation once

you have an unconditional offer to study at Salford, your

application will not be processed until then and it is one less

thing for you to worry about as a late applicant.

Where do I find my student ID (roll) number?

The student ID number can usually be found on your

conditional offer letter or email. Most students who have an

unconditional offer at Salford are sent their ID on a form which

is printed on lilac paper. Please note that you do not require

your student ID number to apply for accommodation, please

refer to our ‘application step-by-step guide’.

Am I guaranteed accommodation?

All first year undergraduate and postgraduate students,

including international students, are guaranteed a place in

University accommodation provided you receive an unconditional

offer of study by 1 September 2010 and you have also applied

for accommodation by 1 September 2010.

I have a medical condition or disability;

what do I need to do?

If you have a disability or medical condition that affects the type

of accommodation you require, please disclose this information

on your application form. The Accommodation Services Team

will be better able to allocate suitable accommodation that

meets your individual needs if you do so at the earliest

opportunity. A member of the Accommodation Services Team

will contact you to discuss your individual needs.

If you have any concerns or would like support before you apply

for accommodation you can contact the Disability Service on

0161 295 0023 for an appointment with a Disability Adviser.

They can help to assess your needs and develop a StudentSupport Plan which will cover all relevant aspects of your

student life. They will also be able to advise the Accommodation

Services Team on making reasonable adjustments or providing

specialist equipment for your accommodation.

I am a care leaver, do I need to include this information

in my application?

If you disclose this information in your application

Accommodation Services Team will be better able to allocate

suitable accommodation that meets your individual nee ds.

If you confirm that you are a care leaver on the online

accommodation application form, the Accommodation Services

Team will contact you. If you don’t select this option, there is a

Student Life Care Leaver Co-coordinator who will be able to

liaise with the Accommodation Services Team to ensure that the

accommodation contract suits your requirements.

Can I live near friends?

Yes this isn’t a problem – if you wish to share with a specific

person or people who will also be new students at Salford,

all members of the group must complete a group application

(which you can select when making your application) ensuring

your friend(s) do the same. If possible you should make your

application at the same time to ensure that your requests are

received together. If all friends don’t give each others name we

may not be able to allocate you and it will delay your applications.

How do I select quieter area accommodation?

When making your application you should select this field

to ensure your preference for a quieter area is noted in your

application; please refer to the information on the website for

further details of this option.

I have made a mistake on the form,

how do I change the details?

If you think you may have made a mistake, or you would like

to double check any of the details on your application, please

contact us by email at [email protected] giving us

your full name and student ID, if possible, in order for us to

amend any information.

Can I cancel the accommodation once I have accepted

an offer?

You can cancel your accommodation at any time prior to

moving in. However, there are certain conditions regarding

the refund of a deposit,

• For the following 7 days after accepting the offer you

have the right to cancel your booking and to the return

of the deposit prior to moving into the accommodation

• We receive notice that you are withdrawing your

acceptance of our offer at least 14 days before the first

day of the Accommodation Period (for 2010/2011 this will

be 31 August 2010)

• As an existing/returning student of the University we must

receive notice that you are withdrawing your acceptance

of our offer by no later than the 1 August prior to the

commencement of the Accommodation Period. Or, six

weeks for a contract starting at any other period

All notices outlined above should be addressed to

[email protected]

If you have any questions regarding deposit refunds email us at

[email protected]

Can I cancel the accommodation once I have

accepted the offer and moved in?

Once you move into your room you have entered into

the legally binding contract, students can only be released

under exceptional circumstances. We therefore strongly

recommend that you understand your obligations prior to

accepting the terms and conditions when accepting your

offer of accommodation.

Why do I need to pay a deposit, what is it for?

The deposit is one part of the acceptance process which secures

your room, it also acts as security for the University should there

be any damage to the accommodation whether it is to a

bedroom or communal area of the property. Deposits are

refunded to you within four weeks of the contract expiring,

providing you have fulfilled all of your obligations and there are

no outstanding fees on your University student account. Please

refer to the accommodation contract for further details.

I wasn’t allocated to any of my preferences,

can I move once I have arrived?

Yes – we can help you to relocate to alternative suitable

accommodation (within the University owned and managed

accommodation) you should ask at the site reception to seeif there are any rooms available at your preferred location.

Providing there is an empty room we will transfer you

straight away.

Can I transfer to another room at any time?

Yes - you can transfer rooms within University of Salford

owned and managed accommodation subject to availability.

The first room move is free of charge. Any subsequent moves

will incur a £25 administration/cleaning charge. All enquiries

should be directed to the site reception, or emailed to

[email protected], where staff can give you

advice on room availability.

Do I need to take out personal possessions insurance?

Contents insurance (up to £3,500) is included in your rent for

your possessions in your flat or house. Supplements are possible

for high value items or items (such as laptops) that are used

outside of the house or flat, for further details please refer to

our terms and conditions page on the accommodation website.

What is included in my rent?

• Use of your accommodation for the entire length of your

contract

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/accommodation-brochure-2010-2011-pdf-version 17/19

I have made an application, when will I receive

an offer of a room?

Students who have an unconditional confirmed offer to study

at Salford will receive an offer of accommodation within

two working days of making their online application. Your

application won’t be processed until you have an unconditional

confirmed offer, to avoid disappointment you should accept

your offer to study quickly to allow Admissions to update their

systems – which will convert your s tatus to unconditional and

allow Accommodation Services to offer you a room.

How do I know I have agreed to abide by the terms

& conditions?

When you go online to accept your offer of accommodation

you cannot complete this part of the process without selecting

the ‘I agree to abide by the terms & conditions’ once you have

done this you will be able to complete the acceptance process.

You can also find this information on the terms & conditions

web page, found on www.accommodation.salford.ac.uk

What are the terms & conditions of the contract?

• Accommodation Contract

• Recharge Schedule – list of costs for repair/replacement of

furniture, equipment and fabric of the building

• Cleaning and Hygiene Standards – what’s expected from you

to keep your accommodation clean, hygienic and a nice place

to live

• Acceptable Use Policy – Accommodation Services behavioural

management policy

• Guest & Visitor Policy – Accommodation Services guidelines

for managing visitors and guests

Can I bring my own furniture?

For a variety of safety reasons items of additional furniture such

as beds, futons, chairs, settees and additional fridges/freezers

are not permitted in our accommodation. If you need to bring

specialist furniture or equipment with you on medical grounds

you should seek further advice by contacting us by email at

[email protected]

Can I bring my pet (including fish, guinea pigs,

mice and spiders etc)?

We do not allow pets to be kept in any of the accommodation

choices.

Can friends and family visit me?

Accommodation Services operates a guest/visitor policy which

form part of the terms & conditions of the accommodation

contract, further details can be found under the terms &

conditions on the accommodation website. Students are also

sent information regarding the policy once they have accepted

their offer of accommodation.

What should I do if I cannot pay my deposit by debit/

credit card at the point of accepting my offer?

Please contact us by email [email protected]

where a member of staff will be able to give advice on

alternative methods of payment.

I may be going on a placement which will mean I am not

at Salford for the full academic year, what should I do?

If there is a possibility of an exchange programme on your

course but you will not receive confirmation until later in the

academic year (usually second and third semester placements)

you can still apply for some of the a ccommodation choices.

These choices are Castle Irwell, Constantine, Horlock, Bramall

and Matthias Courts.

Students considering an exchange programme should not apply

to iQ Student Quarter, John Lester or Eddie Colman Courts as

you will not be released from a contract without finding a

replacement student first.

If you have already booked accommodation or are already in

residence please do not worry that you will not be able to take

part in the Erasmus programme (or other exchange scheme) if

an opportunity becomes available later in the academic year.

We will need to receive either an email or letter from your tutor

confirming that you are taking part and the date it will start. We

will then release you from your contract the weekend before

the placement starts. Please note this only applies to students in

University owned accommodation – Castle Irwell, Constantine,

Horlock, Bramall and Matthias Courts.

I can’t see a contract that matches my requirements,

what should I do?

Please contact us by email at accommodation.salford.ac.uk or

telephone +44(0)161 295 4167 for further advice where our

team of advisers will be able to discuss your requirements and

available locations with you.

Will I be liable for council tax?

No – students are exempt from council tax and as such it is not

payable whilst living in student accommodation.

Do you have specific accommodation for

couples and families?

The University has a number of flats and houses which are

equipped for families and couples; you can find all of the details

on the accommodation website: www.accommodation.salford.

ac.uk. If you need further details please contact us by emailing

[email protected]

I am a postgraduate student, which accommodation

locations are available?

Postgraduate accommodation is available at Matthias Court,

Castle Irwell, iQ Student Quarter and John Lester Court subject

to availability. Further information is available on the website

www.salford.accommodation.ac.uk or email us at

[email protected]

I am a nursing student, which accommodation locations

are available?

Nursing students require a contract for their academic study

period – which is 52 weeks. There are a number of locations

that can offer you a contract specifically for students on health

courses at Castle Irwell and John Lester Court. You can find out

more by visiting our website: www.salford.accommodation.

ac.uk or email [email protected] for further ad vice

on availability.

I am an Erasmus/exchange student, which

accommodation locations are available?

We have introduced special Erasmus and exchange houses

which have more equipment in the kitchens and include

bedding, should you select this option. This will mean thatwhen you arrive you will need to buy some food but your

kitchen and bedroom should have all the items you need.

The houses which are especially for Erasmus and exchange

students are based at Castle Irwell which has lots of sports

facilities and green fields.

I am a first year International student, how do I know

which accommodation site is suitable for my needs?

Accommodation choices are personal to each individual and

should be based on preference for the type of accommodation

that is suitable for your needs. You should consider the number

of people you would like to share with, if you want to be in

mixed sex accommodation, cost and location. The University

employs a team of Resident Life Support Officers who offer 24

hour support. They are located at Castle Irwell and also cover

Horlock and Constantine Court, if it is your first time away from

home you may want to consider this accommodation as an

option as there will always be a member of staff to talk to if you

need advice, guidance or support.

Can I live in University accommodation after

my first year?

The University and its partners do take applications from

students after their first year, we allow a certain number of

students to return to the accommodation providing they are

eligible to do so. Please apply to us in the usual way.

I am a postgraduate and my choice of accommodation

states that it will for both undergraduates and

postgraduates. Are we going to be mixed?

Matthias Court is exclusively postgraduate accommodation.

At other accommodation locations we always try to allocate

student types together wherever possible, if we can’t allocate a

block as postgraduate we may be required to mix the type of

students, we will always try to ensure we allocate suitable

people based on ‘best fit’ with similar preferences.

Does my rent cover the holidays at Easter and Christmas?

Yes, the holidays are included in the rents and the room is yours

for the duration of your contract.

How and when do I pay accommodation fees?

Fees are usually paid by instalment (further details can be found

under ‘contracts and fees’ on the accommodation website). You

can complete a direct debit mandate as part of the acceptance

process providing you have a U K bank account.

If you do not have a UK account you can complete a direct

debit form within two weeks of moving into your

accommodation.
