2012 ACCI MEDIA KIT ACCI–Westpac Survey of Industrial Trends Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry & Westpac Banking Corporation The Westpac–ACCI Actual Composite edged lower in the March quarter to 47.4, from 48.2. This is the fourth straight quarter in which the Actual Composite has been in contractionary territory. The Expected Composite rose to 51.6 in the March quarter, from 50.2. In the past six months, the Expected Composite has retraced a third of the decline experienced over the six months to September 2011. The 'outlook for general business conditions' net balance improved for a second consecutive quarter, but at –11%, it still remains well below the decade average of –2%. The March quarter 2012 edition of the Survey again emphasised that the labour market has softened considerably since mid 2011. Although it improved marginally in the quarter, the level of the Labour Market Composite remains consistent with annual employment growth of less than 1.0% over the next six months. Further, news on the availabilty of labour compared to three months ago also pointed to labour remaining 'easier to get' in early 2012. Consistent with the softer labour market conditions, more manufacturers are now expecting the wage outlook to be subdued; a net 5% of respondents now expect their firm's next wage deal to include an annual wage increase below that contained in the previous agreement. Despite the Actual Composite remaining in 'contractionary territory', there was a modest improvement in the investment outlook. Less firms reported capacity utilisation as being below normal and a smaller number of respondents reported that they intend to reduce their building investment spend. Plant and equipment investment plans were broadly unchanged in the quarter. Profit expectations deteriorated in mid 2011 after a strong post-GFC recovery and have been weak since, although they have improved a little. Unit cost pressures were reported to have increased further in the March quarter and they are expected to rise again in the June quarter, albeit not to the same extent. Manufacturers' pricing power remains extremely limited: on balance, average selling prices were reported to have declined in the quarter and are expected to remain broadly unchanged in the coming quarter. Actual export conditions deteriorated further in the March quarter, likely owing to the continued strength of the Australian dollar and softer global growth. Respondents expect export conditions to improve in the June quarter, but only marginally so. 202 nd report March quarter 2012 (survey conducted 3 February to 9 March 2012)

The Westpac–ACCI Actual Composite edged lower in the March quarter to 47.4, from 48.2. This is the fourth

straight quarter in which the Actual Composite has been in contractionary territory.

The Expected Composite rose to 51.6 in the March quarter, from 50.2. In the past six months, the Expected

Composite has retraced a third of the decline experienced over the six months to September 2011.

The 'outlook for general business conditions' net balance improved for a second consecutive quarter, but at

–11%, it still remains well below the decade average of –2%.

The March quarter 2012 edition of the Survey again emphasised that the labour market has softened

considerably since mid 2011.

Although it improved marginally in the quarter, the level of the Labour Market Composite remains

consistent with annual employment growth of less than 1.0% over the next six months.

Further, news on the availabilty of labour compared to three months ago also pointed to labour remaining

'easier to get' in early 2012.

Consistent with the softer labour market conditions, more manufacturers are now expecting the wage

outlook to be subdued; a net 5% of respondents now expect their firm's next wage deal to include an annual

wage increase below that contained in the previous agreement.

Despite the Actual Composite remaining in 'contractionary territory', there was a modest improvement

in the investment outlook. Less firms reported capacity utilisation as being below normal and a smaller

number of respondents reported that they intend to reduce their building investment spend. Plant and

equipment investment plans were broadly unchanged in the quarter. Profit expectations deteriorated in mid

2011 after a strong post-GFC recovery and have been weak since, although they have improved a little.

Unit cost pressures were reported to have increased further in the March quarter and they are expected

to rise again in the June quarter, albeit not to the same extent. Manufacturers' pricing power remains

extremely limited: on balance, average selling prices were reported to have declined in the quarter and are

expected to remain broadly unchanged in the coming quarter.

Actual export conditions deteriorated further in the March quarter, likely owing to the continued strength of

the Australian dollar and softer global growth. Respondents expect export conditions to improve in the June

quarter, but only marginally so.

EVENTS

ACCI ANNUAL DINNER NOVEMBER, CANBERRA

Held annually in November, ACCI’s Annual Dinner is an end of year celebration, reflecting on the year that’s been and future issues within the areas of business, politics, government and public policy.

It draws together a highly influential audience of businesses leaders, politicians, Member CEOs and Board members, decision-makers and journalists.

Previous Guest Speakers have included senior politicians such as the current Prime Minister the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, former Prime Ministers John Howard MP and Kevin Rudd MP, current Treasurer the Hon. Wayne Swan MP and former Treasurer Peter Costello.

The ACCI Annual Dinner represents an excellent opportunity for brands to engage with a select and receptive audience, whilst also providing support for the aims of the Chamber and Association movement.

This year, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the merging of the Australian Chamber of Commerce with the Confederation of Australian Industry to become what is known today as the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). This was a historical event in our Chamber’s history and highlights the continuing strength of our business voice, which through our predecessors has over 100 years of history and institutional standing
