Searching for “Groups of Geographies”– How to search for “all geographies” within another:

• Step 1 - Select your Geographic Type– Tip: Remember to check your Summary Level Index radio button & Summary

Level Sequence Chart, if needed.

• Step 2 - Use the Geography Filters to narrow to a specific “within” geography, i.e., “within State,” “within County,” etc.

– Tip: If possible, continue to narrow down until the geography results list is manageable with the amount of results.

• Step 3 - (Optional) Change the “Include in Results” radio button

– “Groups of geographies” to only show the “all” geography options– “All geographies” to show the grouped and ungrouped geographies together

• Step 1 - Select your Geographic Type– Census Tract

• Step 2 - Use the Geography Filters to narrow to a specific “within” geography, i.e., “within State,” “within County,” etc.

– Within State = New Mexico– Within County = Bernalillo County

• Step 3 - (Optional) Change the “Include in Results” radio button – “Groups of geographies” to only show the “all” geography options– “All geographies” to show the grouped and ungrouped geographies together

• Step 1 - Check your Summary Level Index Radio button– Tip: Refer to Summary Level Sequence Chart to determine appropriate summary

level. If you don’t see your Summary level filter in AFF2, try changing your index.

• Step 2 - Select your Geographic Type• Step 3 - Select your Geographic Vintage• Step 4 - Use the Geography Filters to narrow to a specific “within”

geography, i.e., “within State,” “within County,” etc. – Tip: If possible, continue to narrow down until the geography results list is

manageable with the amount of results.

3 Using the Geography Filter Options, select Geographic Vintage – 2000

(Note: if Comparing multiple years of data for year specific geographies, select the earliest year of interest; as this will limit the list to exclude any new summary levels from 2010)

The Geography Filters are now limited to only Geographic Typesand Summary Level filters that were included for the year you selected.; The Geography Results will display all geographies that were available in 2000; however, most, if not all. are available for 2010, as well.

4 Using the Geography Filter Options, select:Geographic Type - Other Within American Indian Area – Navajo Nation

The Geography Filter Options and Results are updated.

5 Continue filtering or use the text search option to locate/select the chapters you are interested in, then click “Add” located above the Geography Results.

Note: The three chapters we are searching for do not all contain parts in each of the three states; however, some may.

“Your Selections” & “Search Results” are updated; Search results from both 2000 and 2010 will be available; however, if there are any summary levels that did not exist in one of the two data years, then the data product will only display in your Search Results for the year that it was available.

Close the Geographies Search once you have added all of your geographies to “Your Selections.”

Example: Find and compare the 2010 Census and Census 2000 population and housing unit counts for several Navajo chapters: Red Valley, Sweetwater Chapter, and Teec Nos Pos. Focus your search specifically on the portions of the chapters within Arizona separately from the parts in New Mexico, and Utah.
