Federally Funded by the AT Act of 2004 as Amended

Arizona’s “Tech Act” Project Program of NAU – via the Institute for

Human Development Phoenix Based- Main Office Near Central

& Thomas Road 5 Staff Members in Phoenix & 1.5 In

Flagstaff We Serve the Whole State

What is Assistive Technology or AT?

…Any item, piece of equipment or product system that is used to

increase, maintain or improve the capabilities

of individuals with disabilities

What Are Some Examples of AT? AT can classified as low, Mid or high Tech Examples:

Low: Drinking Straw with a Flexible Tip (No Power)

Mid: Big Button Low Vision Talking Calculator (Batteries)

High Tech: Eye Gaze Communication System (AC Power & Lots of Programming/Attention)

Providing AT – Guidelines…

Consider Low Tech Before High Tech (High Tech AT changes at the speed of light – low tech AT does not)

Always Involve the Person or PWD’s in the Decision making process

Consumer, customer or “end user” has ultimate decision making authority

Go in knowing selecting, providing and implementing AT is a Journey not a Destination
