AIM Basics

Accessible instructional materials (AIM) are materials that are designed or converted in a way that makes them usable across the widest range of student variability regardless of format (print, digital, graphic, audio, video).

The Student

What does the Student need to do?

What are the Student's special needs?

What are the Student's current abilities?

Page 16: Accessible Instructional Materials Dr. BJ GallagherMcDaniel CollegeOctober 17, 2014.

The Environment

What materials and equipment are currently available in the environment?

What is the physical arrangement?

Are there special concerns?

What is the instructional arrangement?

Are there likely to be changes?

What supports are available to the student?

What resources are available to the people supporting the student?

Page 17: Accessible Instructional Materials Dr. BJ GallagherMcDaniel CollegeOctober 17, 2014.

The Tasks

What activities take place in the environment?

What activities support the student's curriculum?

What are the critical elements of the activities?

How might the activities be modified to accommodate the student's special needs?

How might technology support the student's active participation in those activities?

Page 18: Accessible Instructional Materials Dr. BJ GallagherMcDaniel CollegeOctober 17, 2014.

The Tools

What no tech, low tech, and high tech options should be considered when developing a system for a student with these needs and abilities doing these tasks in these environments?

What strategies might be used to invite increased student performance?

How might these tools be tried out with the student in the customary environments in which they will be used?

Page 19: Accessible Instructional Materials Dr. BJ GallagherMcDaniel CollegeOctober 17, 2014.

How are decisions made?

The most effective way to consider issues related to the provision of accessible instructional materials (AIM) is through a decision-making process.

The four (4) steps in the process include—

1. Establish need for instructional materials in specialized formats (Use SETT Framework) 2. Select specialized format(s) needed by the student for access to the curriculum 3. Initiate Frederick County-defined steps to acquire needed formats in a timely manner 4. Determine supports needed for effective use for educational participation and achievement

Page 20: Accessible Instructional Materials Dr. BJ GallagherMcDaniel CollegeOctober 17, 2014.

Need

Option One: The student can use standard print-based instructional materials used across the curriculum by other students.

Option Two: The student requires exactly the same content in one or more specialized formats.

Option Three: The student requires modified content or alternative materials.

Page 21: Accessible Instructional Materials Dr. BJ GallagherMcDaniel CollegeOctober 17, 2014.

Selection

List the print materials that are used across the curriculum,

Consider the instructional context in which they are used,

Select which formats the student needs, and

Determine which materials are needed in the selected formats.

Supports for Use

1) What technology may be needed for the student to use the materials effectively?

2) What training for the student, educators, and family may be needed?

3) What instructional strategies may be needed?

4) What support services may be needed?

5) What accommodations and/or modifications may be needed?
