The "Hilfsgemeinschaft der Blinden und Sehschwachen Österreichs" is an organisation that has
actively supported blind and visually-impaired people in Austria for more than 80 years.
As the oldest, and with 4,600 members the largest self-help organisation for the visually
impaired, the organisation represents the interests of some 318,000 significantly visually-
impaired people throughout Austria.
One of the major concerns of the Hilfsgemeinschaft is to work with others in making concerns
heard, combatting unfavourable developments and campaigning for changes for the better.

DREAMWAVES
At Dreamwaves, we are creating an innovative navigation system to
guide blind and visually impaired people in unknown environments.
For this user group, mobility is extremely difficult. Obstacles can be
hard to avoid and objects of interest cannot be identified. This results
in dependence, discomfort and social isolation.
Dreamwaves is an early stage startup company, specialized in
navigation systems, augmented reality and spatial audio.

GARI – GLOBAL ACCESSIBILITY REPORTING INITIATIVE
Sabine Lobnig Consulting & Translations e.U. offers the GARI database, which contains
comprehensive information about the accessibility features of mobile devices, tablets, smart
TVs and wearables.
The database is available in 18 languages and is designed to help consumers, including people
with disabilities and the elderly, to find a suitable device.

SIGN TIME
Sign Time translates texts into sign languages semi-automatically using 3D animated avatars. Standardized texts such as traffic incident messages or weather forecasts can be translated fully automatically and therefore very cost-effectively. Sign Time mainly translates texts for websites, but also movies, advertising, citizen information, customer information and patient information (e.g.: information for use in medicines). Austrian and German sign languages are currently available. We are looking for partners to extend our system to other languages and countries.

The “Essl Foundation MGE gemeinnützige Privatstiftung” is an Austrian foundation established
in 2007 by Martin and Gerda Essl and their children for social purposes and scientific research.
The mission of the Essl Foundation is to support social innovation and social entrepreneurship,
focusing mainly on persons with disabilities.
Programmes of the Essl Foundation are centred on:
• The Zero Project, a worldwide network project that jointly explores, researches, and
communicates Innovative Practices and Innovative Policies that support the UN Convention on
the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
• Social projects mainly in Austria, with an emphasis on the employment of persons with
disabilities. This is supported by regional and sector conferences, a variety of publications, and
other advocacy activities all designed to promote a paradigm shift in inclusive employment,
accessibility and education.
• Sinnstifter, a joint effort of more than ten Austrian foundations to support social innovation
and philanthropy in Austria.
The Essl Foundation is a non-profit organization that has had special consultative status with
the UN Economic and Social Council since 2014; is associated with the UN Department of Public
Information; and is a member of the European Foundation Centre, the “Verband für
gemeinnütziges Stiften”, and the Sinnstifter association.

The core task of MVG is to ensure the responsible retailing of tobacco products in Austria.
The system can be regarded as a public social franchise system. As a public franchisor, MVG
pursues social policy, health policy and fiscal objectives. Tobacco products are only sold in
designated "Trafik" shops.
Every newly awarded "Trafik" tobacco shop is allocated to a person with a disability. 1,270
people with disabilities run "Trafik" shops, which may also be passed on as an inheritance
under certain circumstances.
Child protection plays a major role. MVG monitors compliance with the prohibition of sales to
minors.

"Ohrenschmaus" is a non-profit association that promotes the literature of people with
disabilities.
Since 2007, the Ohrenschmaus Literature Prize has been a joint initiative of the partner
organisations Lebenshilfe Österreich, Diakonie Österreich, Caritas Österreich, Jugend am Werk
and Vienna People First. The prize encourages people with disabilities to recognise their talents
and skills and to take them seriously. It is intended to make them feel valued and also motivate
them to make their linguistic and literary forms of expression a central part of their lives. At the
same time it communicates a message to the public that people with disabilities have
something to say in the field of literature. This aims to promote integration and inclusion.
