LIVING OUR VALUES

We are pleased to share our 2015 Annual Report with you and to recognize the agency for 40 years of providing a range of mental health supports and services in Toronto. As a multi-service mental health agency, we serve youth and adults with mental health challenges and/or developmental disabilities and their families, who need help in dealing with a range of mental health challenges and concerns at home, school and in the community.

Griffin Centre offers a unique continuum of services in four sectors: youth with mental health concerns, youth involved in the justice system, youth with a dual diagnosis (mental health concerns and a developmental disability) including those with autism, and adults with a dual diagnosis including autism. We are proud of our ongoing efforts to enhance the continuum of supports and services for individuals with complex needs as we work closely with our cross-sector service provider partners to strengthen the overall capacity of the system and improve access to services.

In 2015, Griffin Centre was accredited for the fifth time by an external third party. During the Accreditation process, the passion of our committed staff in delivering ACCESSIBLE services and in developing FLEXIBLE plans to respond to indi-vidual needs was highlighted. It is clear that at Griffin Centre, youth, individuals and their families are at the core of what we do and that the Centre’s strongly held VALUES drive service delivery and our ongoing commitment to STRENGTHS-BASED, high quality, accountable services and continuous improvement. Both the children’s and the adult developmental services

sectors are undergoing significant change as efforts are made to streamline and rationalize the service delivery systems to make them easier to understand and navigate. Griffin Centre supports these efforts and will continue to play a strong role in helping to shape the system and to advocate for those whose needs exceed the capacity of any one agency or service sector. Griffin Centre has and will continue to work in COLLABORATION with our community service provider partners to create innovative solutions for those we serve.

This year, in our Annual Report, we share some stories about LIVING OUR VALUES which highlight the incredible work that our staff do in engaging with clients, tailor making plans with and for them, and helping them to experience success.

Our Thanks. We are very grateful to our staff whose passion, energy, creativity and dedication enable the agency to adapt and flourish. Our staff are the foundation of the agency and it is as a result of their efforts that so many youth, individuals and families have opportunities to develop new skills for their lives.

We are also extremely grateful to the Centre’s Board of Directors for their guidance, oversight of the agency and the leadership they provide. This year, we especially thank Monica Goyal, for her years of service on the Board as a Board Member and laterally, as the Board Chair. We welcome Bill Schultz as the new Chair of the Board and look forward to working together as we contribute to changes underway in the service system which will have impacts for the agency and those we serve.

Our thanks also go to our government and private sector partners for their generous support of the agency and their confidence in our work. We extend our sincere appreciation to our service provider partners who collaborate with us every day in our mutual efforts to make a difference in the lives of those we collectively serve.

Barbara Macdonald, Chief Executive OfficerChair, Board of Directors, Monica Goyal

1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health or addiction problem.

Young people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders than any other age group.

Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend or colleague.

By 1981, Griffin Centre assumed ongoing responsibility for youth with a dual diagnosis in Toronto. Late in that same year, the Centre opened an intensive residential treatment program for these youth -- the first of its kind in all of Canada.

ACCESSIBILTY STRENGTHS-BASED

Providing programs that respect the rich diversity of those requesting help (i.e., ethnicity, race, language, age, sexual orientation or disability).

Open five days a week, three evenings a week, individuals can access singlesession counselling when they need it, rather than having to deal with waitlists, catchment areas or age restrictions. The clinic serves individuals age 0-29 and their parents.

The service is free, no health card is required and appointments are not necessary, clients simply ‘walk-in’ when they want or need a session.

We also provide service in several languages, which makes counselling ACCESSIBLE to those who may not have been able to participate in a session in English. Our staff speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi, Korean, Tamil, Hindi, Urdu, Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian.

As part of the larger what’s up walk-in® partnership, our walk-in benefits from adopting an existing and successful model of delivering singlesession, solution-focused counselling.

We share ideas, learn and support one another while providing ACCESS to the service throughout the city, again increasing our ACCESSIBILITY to the community. Griffin Centre is one of 5 locations.

Other locations include: East Metro Youth Services, Oolagen, Yorktown Family Services, and The Etobicoke Children’s Centre.

Antonio was diagnosed with autism and semantic pragmatic disorder at an ear-ly age. He lacked the motor skills to hold a pencil properly and could not write his own name. He also had great difficulty speaking and experts suggested that he would never develop these skills fully.

Antonio came to Griffin Centre through our Griffin Community Support Network (GCSN) in his early twenties. GCSN provides time-limited crisis and transitional support which includes specialized assessments, consultation and/or treatment, short-term case management services, residential safe beds and day programming options for adults 16 years and over with a developmental disability or dual diagnosis (developmental disability, mental health challenges and/or behavior challenges).

Antonio was very dependent on his Dad, and needed help in becoming more self-sufficient so that he could transition into the next phase of his life. Anto-nio had a love for art and martial arts. Griffin Centre supported him by teach-ing him how to independently take the TTC to get to his classes and allowing him to recognize his skills and abilities.

As a visual learner, Griffin staff built on his STRENGTHS by using visual cues that would motivate him to learn his routes. Looking at maps and taking pictures of the route along the way helped Antonio gain the confidence to pursue his dreams.

Today, at 24 years old, Antonio has a part-time job and is thriving as an artist with his own line of art, comics and products. His art is about acceptance and diversity, the storyline embodies inclusion and acceptance for all races and abilities.

Griffin Centre is committed to fostering positive change. Our STRENGTHS-BASED, high quality, accountable services give clients a place to belong, and opportunities to build skills, confidence and connections to make the transition to a satisfying life.

Providing services that recognize and enhance the abilities and skills of individuals, families and communities.

Griffin Centre is committed to fostering positive change. Our STRENGTHS-BASED, high quality, accountable services give clients a place to belong, and opportunities to build skills, confidence and connections to make the transition to a satisfying life. Visit Antonio’s website “The Artistic Guardian” at www.theartisticguardian.com and support his work.

what’s up walk-in® is a free child and youth mental health counselling service. The clinic helps with anxiety, depression, sleeping or eating problems, bullying, sexual identity, managing anger, feeling alone…or anything else that’s on your mind.

FLEXIBILITY/CHOICE

Ensuring services are adaptable and responsive to the changing needs of individuals, families and communities.

One such innovative and creative partnership is with Dr. David Gotlib and KoNote.

Over the past two years, Griffin Centre has had the great pleasure of working in COLLABORATION with Dr. Gotlib on the development and implementation of KoNote in our day treatment programs. We have been impressed with how Dr. Gotlib has been able to design KoNote to be responsive to our unique needs. The software was built with Griffin Centre’s diverse clientele’s challenges and objectives as its fundamental focus, and promotes COLLABORATION amongst our professional team; allowing them to efficiently produce, track and evaluate client goals and targets successfully. It has supported a consistent and shared vision of client treatment within the team and consultants who support direct service delivery. It has allowed access to accurate data in a timely manner, which results in improved consultation with team members and the creation of responsive interventions.

Clients and family also benefit from KoNote. Allowing them to visually see their progress and the events that contribute to their success will enhance the engagement of clients and families in their treatment. “Clients and families become active participants in their treatment which increases their ability to sustain their improvements once leaving our services.”

Management staff have reported improved confidence and comfort in their oversight of the treatment program. Moving from a paper system to this nimble electronic client record system by using KoNote will significantly improve our delivery of services when clients are receiving treatment in a number of our programs. Our teams are excited with the upcoming expansion of KoNote to our residential programs.

As a provider of children and youth mental health services, the need to have an electronic client record system allows us to clearly demonstrate positive outcomes in our client’s lives. As an organization we are truly fortunate to have this COLLABORATION with Dr. Gotlib and KoNote.

Mental health involves our ability to interact, think, feel and deal with different situations that come up in our lives. At Griffin Centre, we are committed to being FLEXIBLE and adaptable when providing services that support our clients. We help them cope with challenges and CHOICES in their lives, and create tailored counselling approaches designed for their ever changing needs.

With a history of drug and sexual abuse and living in and out of many foster care homes after both of his parents’ deaths, John has faced difficult situations throughout his life while dealing with an array of mental health challenges. He had also incurred a number of youth criminal charges and was before the courts.

After being referred to Griffin Centre by his school, John was assigned a social worker. Through service collaboration, John’s social worker worked with CAS, a Griffin Centre youth mental health court worker, Toronto Bail program, CAMH, John’s high school, and foster parents to create individualized accommodations for school and home. “Through this cooperative enterprise we have an enhanced capacity to support people like John with complex conditions and improve access to the different resources he needs. Being FLEXIBLE in the support we provide is imperative for progress.”

John’s transient lifestyle meant that our work could go from intensive to sporadic. Often, John could drop by to see his worker without notice. Therefore, John was placed on a high needs list in which allowed scheduling FLEXIBILITY, ensuring assistance was provided whether or not his assigned worker was available.

Today, John has gone through various types of counselling; learning how to deal with the loss of his parents through grief counselling, and managing his behavioral problems through anger management, narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral methods. A system has been implemented so all members of the multidisciplinary team are updated regularly, ensuring John is consistently supported throughout his journey to success.

Through our Doorways program, we deliver an integrated, recovery based model of complex care coordination and case management and treatment for youth ages 15 to 25 and their families.

Working with others to share knowledge, skills and learning to promote healthy, supportive environments for all individuals and families.

Ensuring consumer input in the governance and service planning of the Centre. Advocating for public policies and services that strengthen individuals, families and communities.

Thank you for your continued support and for joining our efforts in delivering services that enhance lives and communities. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Griffin Centre’s annual fundraising events raise money to support the individuals and families we serve. Funds support the development of programs and services. Events like these can only be successful with the generous support of our sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN

The holiday season is a difficult time for many individuals and families but those struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads experience significant challenges every day. The Holiday Campaign helps youth who are trying to live independently in the community, single parents, newcomers and low income individuals with mental health needs who do not have access to affordable, nutritious meals. By providing a warm meal for the holidays, we decrease the risks of mental health concerns and increase the overall well-being of the individuals we serve.

Our goal for Griffin Centre’s Holiday Campaign was to raise $5,000 to provide individuals and their families with a warm meal over the holiday season.

The funds raised allow Griffin Centre to facilitate more than a one-time gift to families in need throughout the year.

Due to the overwhelming generosity of the community, together we raised over $18,000.
