About ACCESS for ELLs 2.0

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is a secure large-scale English language proficiency assessment administered to Kindergarten through 12th grade students who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). It is given annually in WIDA Consortium member states to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is only available to Consortium member states.

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards and assesses each of the four language domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Assessing students' academic language abilities in English include

Listening Process, understand, interpret and evaluate spoken language in a variety of situations

Reading Process, understand, interpret and evaluate written language, symbols and text with understanding and fluency

Writing Engage in written communication in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes and audiences

Speaking Engage in oral communication in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes and audiences

WIDA Standard and Assessment Systems

• The Guiding Principles represent WIDA’s core beliefs about language development. Theywere developed from a synthesis of literature and research related to languagedevelopment and effective instructional practices for language learners.

• The Can Do Philosophy is based on the belief that everyone brings valuable resourcesto the education community. Linguistically and culturally diverse learners, inparticular, bring a unique set of assets that have the potential to enrich theexperiences of all learners and educators. Educators can draw on these assets for thebenefit of both the learners and the community.

• Age-appropriate Academic Language is viewed as a vehicle for communicating andlearning within sociocultural contexts, the interactions between different people forspecific purposes and across different learning environments, which influence howlanguage is used.

• The Performance Definitions delineate what the various levels of languageproficiency look like, informed by the Features of Academic Language.

• The Can Do Descriptors highlight what language learners can do at various stages oflanguage development as they engage in teaching and learning in academic contexts.

• The English Language Development Standards represent the social, instructional,and academic language that students need to engage with peers, educators, and thecurriculum in schools. Tier Placement Protocol for ACCESS for ELLs®

ACCESS for ELLs is divided into three tiers: A, B, and C. While the tiers overlap, each tier assesses a different range of language proficiency. Therefore, to ensure the best possible testing experience for each student and the most meaningful results, it is necessary to place each student into the tier that best matches his or her proficiency level.

The selection of a student’s tier is best made by his or her teachers, based on the information they have about the student’s language proficiency. Criteria may include the student’s progress in the classroom as well as test results from past administrations of ACCESS for ELLs, WIDA Screener, WIDA MODEL, and/or the W-APT.

It is important to note that students who take the Tier A assessment cannot score higher than a 4.0 proficiency level in the domains of Reading and Listening. Likewise, students who take the Tier B assessment cannot receive higher than 5.0 on Reading or Listening. For this reason, students who are nearing these proficiency levels should be assigned the next higher tier so that their ability to show progress in these domains is not limited.

Your State’s ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Checklist

WIDA has worked directly with your state education agency to develop the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Checklist. This list highlights all tasks that need to be completed before, during, and after testing within a school or district and outlines which tasks are assigned to test coordinators at the district and school level and test administrators. It also provides additional guidance that your state expects you to follow as you prepare for and administer the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 suite of assessments.

Roles and Responsibilities for ACCESS 2.0

There are 3 main roles for ACCESS 2.0: Test coordinator, test administrator, and technology coordinator. Although it is imperative that all three roles are in close communication with one another to ensure effective online test administration, each role has its own set of responsibilities, outlined below.

Headset vs. Headphones Headset Headphones

Test Site Manager (TSM) The Testing Site Manager is a software application that contains a number of software tools to help a district plan, configure, manage, and troubleshoot the online testing environment. The TSM can be downloaded on WIDA AMS.

Benefits of the Testing Site Manager: • Reduces demand on bandwidth by storing test content• May be installed on any computer within the local network• Content Caching is recommended and Response Caching is optional for all WIDA testing• Saves student responses if the internet connection between the Testing Site and DRC is

temporarily lost

INSIGHT Test Engine INSIGHT is the secure web browser testing interface installed on each testing device. This software communicates with the DRC INSIGHT server to provide test practice and test questions to the test taker and to send responses to the DRC INSIGHT server, which stores them securely.

Technology Troubleshooting

Common System Message Troubleshooting Action

Invalid Username and Password The student has either typed in the information incorrectly or has logged into the wrong testing location. Back out to the main menu and verify the location where the student is logging in. This is not a technical error.

Internet/Network Connection Error – There was an interruption in the internet connection and the testing device cannot reach DRC servers or the TSM.

Did the district technical department whitelist both the urls and the IP addresses on all content filters, firewalls, and antivirus software? If wireless, check the access point to computer ratio. Are there too many devices connecting to one access point? Conduct a speedtest at www.speedtest.net to Minnetonka, MN. What is the upload and download speed? If it is less than 10 mbps, it is too slow to test.

TSM Connection Error – Workstation cannot connect to the TSM internally on the network.

Proceed with Internet Connection Error Troubleshooting Contact local IT staff to confirm the local machine firewall is turned off on a windows TSM. Contact local IT staff to confirm that the TSM service is running. If no one can test, restart or reboot the service.

Configuration Not Found, Configuration Error – The testing device is not registered to theDevice Toolkit and cannot proceed with testing until assigned an ORG Unit ID.

Contact local IT staff to register the device to the Device Toolkit

No TSM Configured – The Testing Site Manager has not been installed on the local network or configured in the Device Toolkit.

Contact local IT staff to install or configure a Testing Site Manager.

Connection Error Retrieving Content – Testing Device cannot connect to the TSM or content servers to access test content.

Contact local IT staff to confirm that all content files are on the TSM management portal. Contact local IT staff to confirm content files are up to date. Proceed with Internet Connection Error Troubleshooting

Proxy -336 Error – This is an issue with configuration within the Device Toolkit.

Contact local IT staff to confirm that there is nothing in the proxy host field within the Device Toolkit. If so, erase, and redeploy a new configuration file with no proxy server

No Audio

Does the audio stop after “Begin test?” Is the machine sound dialed more than halfway up? Does the audio work outside the software? Does the audio work from the speakers? Are the headphones plugged in before launching the software? Is the latest sound card driver installed?

Frozen or Gray Screen with spinning wheel Exit the test and reboot the machine. This is due to temporary overloaded internet traffic or maxed out memory on the computer.

The record button is grayed out. The student has already hit record and the response is recorded. This is not a technical error.

The next button is grayed out. The student has not completed the question on the test. This is not a technical error.

Test Administrator’s Troubleshooting Chart

If you run into a system message…

• Reboot the machine• Does the error still occur?• Can you move the student to a different computer within the same lab or mobile laptop cart?• Does the error still occur?• Mark the affected computer with a Post-it and notify your IT department.

Test Icons Every screen of the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Field Test contains a set of buttons, links, and options that have important functions for the administration of the test. The test administrator should refer to the tables below to study the functionality of these buttons, links, and options.

Sign In Verifies the student’s Username and Password, and logs the student into the test.

Back Returns the student to previous page within the Log In Pages.

Continue Allows the student to navigate to the Test Selection Page.

Exit Allows the student the option to exit the test or resume testing.

No, Return to Test Allows the student the option to resume testing after clicking the Exit button.

Yes, Exit Allows the student to exit the test.

Begin the Test Allows the student to begin the test session, starting with the test directions.

Test Screen Accessibility Tools, Buttons, and Icons Button/Icon Name Purpose/Function

Magnifier Allows the student to access the magnifier options.

Magnifier Options Allows the student magnification of the testing engine either x 1.5 or x 2.0. Once the magnification option is selected, then the “Off” option will become available.

Highlighter Allows the student to highlight a portion of the text or graphic. To turn this feature off after use, the student must select the highlighter tool button a second time.

Line Guide Allows the student to follow along with each line of text. Student can drag the straightedge line up or down on the screen as an aid in reading an item or passage.

Help The Help Library provides information on tool usage, test directions, helpful hints, and other topics.

Pause

Allows the student to leave his or her machine for up to 30 minutes for a break without logging out of the test, while not presenting the items on screen. Student should only use the Pause button when instructed to by the Test Administrator.

Resume Allows the student to resume testing after the test was paused (for 30 minutes or fewer).

Options Allows the student to access the “Color Contrast” and “Color Overlay” options. These options are available for all students.

Back Allows the student to navigate back one page. This button is only available for Writing.

Progress Indicator (Blue)

An indicator of the time remaining to record the response. The indicator is blue when the student clicks on the Record button.

Progress Indicator (Yellow)

An indicator of the time remaining to record the response. The indicator changes from blue to yellow when 10 seconds remain.

Progress Indicator (Count Down)

The indicator will move within the circle for the final 10 seconds of allotted response time.

Progress Indicator (White)

An indicator of the time remaining to record the response. The indicator changes to white when the time is up and the recording automatically ends.

Spectrum Analyzer Visual indicator that the student is speaking loudly enough.

Record (Disabled) Disabled until the audio has finished playing.

Record (Enabled) Allows the student to begin recording a response.

Recording (Enabled) Highlights that recording is in progress.

Stop (Disabled) Disabled until the student clicks on the Record button to begin recording.

Stop (Enabled) Enabled once the student clicks the Record button to begin recording. Ends the recording of the student response.

Try Again

Navigates the student back to the beginning of the Student Microphone Check, as the student did not hear the recording and wishes to try again.

Online ACCESS 2.0 for ELLs Paper Based Form ACCESS 2.0 for ELLs • Each domain is a separate test session

Managing ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Testing Materials

Test Security All materials in the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 suite of assessments are considered secure test materials. Therefore it is important to take the appropriate measures to maintain security and confidentiality of all test materials.

Administrators must adhere to the following: Prior to administration

• Review labels and/or bubbled information to ensure all student information isaccurate.

• Complete labeling or bubbling if needed.

During administration

• Distribute the test booklets, as applicable, to the correct students.• Verify that students have been given their assigned booklet.

Immediately following administration

• Collect all materials from all students.• Review student test booklets once more for any errors or discrepancies in student

information.• Confirm all necessary fields are completed and all necessary labels are correctly

adhered to student test booklets.• Ensure all booklets are in proper condition to be returned, with no loose or damaged

pages.• Return test materials to a Test Coordinator, or store the booklets in a secure area

until they can be handed over to a Test Coordinator.
