This past year has been one of continued positive momentum. In President Andy Smith's letter (opposite), he pinpoints some true highlights of this past year. And much is in the works for 2014! This coming year we will continue our focus on elevating both the everyday and the special club experiences. The Club will be buzzing with activity and opportunities for your health and enjoyment and to share your Club experience with friends, family, and business colleagues.
In mid December, smack in the middle of all the holiday hoopla, the Club took delivery of 17 pieces of new upper and lower body exercise equipment. Athletic Director Dana Johnson deserves a big pat on the back as he did a fantastic job of identifying top tier equipment for the Club. The design of the new Technogym® equipment will both help you maintain a healthier posture while exercising and isolate the targeted muscles, getting you a better return for your invested energy. One feature that is an immediate hit is the improvement in the ease of adjusting the machine to fit your body. We should disclose that no one has reported that the weight is any easier to lift.
In January, the construction on The Booth bowling lounge renovation will begin in full swing. Among other exciting features, The Booth space will allow us to offer 60 seats for dining, member events, or private events. As pizza will be the menu anchor, we were thrilled to receive our deck pizza ovens. Following installation of ventilation and the delivery of dough mixers, the culinary team will get to work on testing for our house recipe. We will keep you posted on the progress of this new endeavor over the coming months.
Our partners at Columbus Country Club have been stepping up the tempo under the leadership of new General Manager Josh Sheppard. With an exciting outlook for joint-club programming, improvements to the course, and preparation for clubhouse improvements, we're looking forward to a great golf season ahead. In 2014, you will see more ways than ever to get the most of your ACC & CCC town and country experience.

The restaurants will be closed for dinner service.

House Rules Reminder:Guest PrivilegesAccording the Club’s Code of Regulations and House Rules, guests are permitted, with no guest fee, to dine or attend specific events with members. However, members bringing guests to the Athletic facilities are required to register their guests at the front desk and pay the appropriate guest fee (currently $10 per guest.) Please also note that members have priority in all areas, including attendance in group fitness classes.

I write this on the heels of our annual Martini and Mistletoe holiday party—the most successful Martini and Mistletoe in the history of our Club! If you were there, I know you agree that our dedicated staff at the ACC did an amazing job of providing food, drink and entertainment for all of us. If you weren’t there, well, you missed a great time! (But not to worry, Spring Fling - featuring Conspiracy Band - will be here before you know it!)
This is the last letter I will write to you as your Club President. What a great year it has been to be at the ACC! There is no doubt in my mind that the arrow of our Club’s future is pointed up, and as good as 2013 has been, there is even more great news on the horizon. But let me take this final opportunity to recap some of the highlights of the year that was.
We have achieved positive membership growth not just in numbers, but also in the participation of our members in our Club activities. In addition to our Martini and Mistletoe, Spring Fling, Lobster Night, Chop House Night, Trivia…all of these events and the efforts of our ACC staff to provide creative entertainment were met with an enthusiastic response from a great cross section of our members.
We have opened a new Spa on the third floor to great success. For those of you who have not yet been, treat yourself to one of the many services available from our Spa professionals.
We have a new Assistant General Manager, Mike Delcour. Mike will be tasked to make your membership experience the best it can be, and he will focus his early efforts in our food and beverage operations.
There is new and challenging equipment on the 5th floor to
keep us active and in shape. Ask Dana, Blair or any of our athletic staff to give you a tour of some really great new machines that will challenge all of us.
And, of course the sidewalk is done…at long last!
As to the future of the Club, I know that incoming President Dave McCurdy and the Board will do a great job of keeping the Club moving in the right direction. Dave brings business savvy, and a passion for the Club and its members, to the job and I look forward to his leadership. I would be remiss if I failed to thank Lisa Antolino, our immediate Past President, for her years of dedicated service to the Club, and to also thank Dave Tritsch, Tim D’Angelo, Joe Patrick, Mike Fritz, Mark Sell, Carla Sokol and Mark Vannatta for their service on the Board of Directors. Each of these fine people have given selflessly of their time to make our Club the best place it can be.
Let me also thank, as sincerely as I can, Paul Kroll, Sarah Favara, Mary Alvarado and all the wonderful members of the ACC staff, for their great work, and always positive
approach to what they do. It is our people who make us what we are as a Club, and we are lucky to have some of the best people I know on our team.
Finally, thanks to all of you who stopped me in the halls of the Club to offer your suggestions and support for how to make our Club a better place. I know now how much the ACC means to so many of us, and it has been an honor to serve as your President.
All the best to you and your families for a happy and healthy 2014.

FACES OF THE ACC“ I’m 18 years old but with 42 years of experience,” – Cliff BaselerCliff Baseler can be found at the ACC Library Bar many nights, sipping a glass of Merlot and swapping stories with the regulars. Born on a farm in Grove City, PA, he recently turned 60, but professes that he is a kid at heart. He smiles and calls himself fortunate to have learned from the maturation of his profession (he is on the “agency” side of commercial insurance). He has also been a part of the evolution of the Athletic Club, a perk that was granted him 32 years ago by the McElroy Minister Company.
ACC: You are an ACC handballer…that’s a small group these days.Cliff: Yes. When I joined, it was the biggest sport at the Club---about 60 league members. Now we’re down to 7 or 8 guys. I actually played racquetball when I joined, but succumbed to the pressure to learn handball. I’ll never forget my first year playing---I entered a handicapped mini-tournament and my handicap was 18 (games are to 21). They pitted me against scratch player Dan Carmichael, and I lost 21 to 19! He played me like a puppet. I was diving, running in to walls---and he calmly controlled the middle and afterward invited me for a beer. Being the gentleman that he is, he asked if he could give me some pointers, and proceeded to tell me “It’s only a game---don’t dive for the ball, and quit trying to hit every single serve so hard.” I was schooled.
ACC: Seems like you’ve learned a lot at the Club. Cliff: For sure. I was exposed to things that I otherwise would probably never have experienced. I got involved with cultural events like the symphony and plays, learned new sports, and most importantly expanded my circle of friends and business connections very naturally. It’s easy to strike up a conversation with just about anybody at the Club.
ACC: The Library Bar sometimes seems a bit mysterious…what’s the secret?Cliff: The secret is “no secrets”! We can just be ourselves there. It’s a group of regulars---most of the handballers, who are
ACC: What do you remember about your first days at the Club all those years ago?Cliff: It was a pretty rigorous admissions process. Two partners at my firm, Thorp Minister and George McElroy toured the Club with me and introduced me to influential business leaders who were ACC members. I was a single guy at the time, and I found it a little intimidating, but exciting. I thought it was hugely impressive to walk in the Club with a date and actually have Robert greet me as “Mr. Baseler”!
ACC: You talk about the evolution of the Club…what does that mean?Cliff: The Club has done a very good job of changing with the times. Years ago, it was an all male membership, the three-martini lunch was common, and the athletics side of things was very different. It has naturally progressed to a healthier, more diverse membership, and I love the interaction between longtime members like Dan Carmichael to the young professionals who we call “flat bellies”! It’s refreshing for a people person like myself to get to know all these different members, always expanding my network of friends.
ACC: You’re a family man, too. Cliff: Definitely! I’ve been married to Karen since 1985, and we have three kids: daughter Amanda (recently married,) son Cliff, Jr.; and son, Brian. Cliff recently joined the ACC on his own, and it’s nice to pass the ACC legacy on! My kids have gotten to know the Club very well. I took Amanda to 17 straight Father-Daughter dances, starting when she was just one.

A few comments from Cliff, Jr.:ACC: A single young man with a promising career (a senior risk analyst for JP Morgan Chase) joining the Club….sounds reminiscent of your Dad 32 years ago.Cliff Jr.: I was always comfortable at the Club, and it just seemed like a natural progression of sorts.
ACC: Your Dad has a lot of great stories about his time at the Club.Cliff Jr.: Yes, and half of them are true!
ACC: Are you creating your own stories here?Cliff Jr.: Definitely. I play basketball a few times a week and workout some. Plus I’ll go to some of the events like Martinis and Mistletoe and the Wild Game Dinner---there’s plenty to keep me busy.
ACC: Do you think you’ll start hanging out in the Library Bar?Cliff Jr.: (Laughing) I’ll hang out there when I’m older and have lost some hair so I fit in. (Jim the bartender smacks him.)
