Accelerated Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in TATM
Proposed by
the Graduate Programs Committee
in the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (TATM)
in the College of Textiles (COT)
March, 2014
I. Objectives
The Accelerated Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology
and Management (TATM) are designed to provide exceptional undergraduate students in the Fashion and
Textile Management (FTM) and Fashion and Textile Design (FTD) programs with a curriculum that will
provide the opportunity to complete a BS degree (in FTM or FTD) and a TATM Master's degree in 5 to 5 1/2 years. Students in this ABM program can choose to pursue a non-thesis track in which they can
potentially complete a Master of Textiles (MT) degree within 12 months after obtaining a Bachelor's (BS)
degree in FTM or FTD. Alternatively, students can choose the thesis track in which they can potentially
complete a Master of Science in Textiles (MS) degree within the18 months following obtaining a BS
degree in FTM or FTD.
Course offerings at the graduate and undergraduate levels will be coordinated to avoid duplicated
materials and thereby streamline the learning process. The Director of Graduate Programs (DGP) and the
Director of Undergraduate Programs (DUP) in the Department of TATM will work closely with each
ABM student in their course selection to fulfil the requirements for both degrees before they are officially
admitted into the graduate programs.
This ABM program will provide benefits to students by streamlining the learning process and reducing
the amount of time needed to complete both the bachelor’s degree and the advanced degree. From the
graduate program recruiting perspective, this program will appeal to the high performance students in our
undergraduate programs.

Proposed ABM degrees in TATM:
BS in FTM + MS in Textiles
BS in FTD + MS in Textiles
BS in FTM + MT in Textiles
BS in FTD + MT in Textiles
III. Proposed Effective Date: Jan, 2015
IV. Program Eligibility
Students seeking admission to the ABM program in TATM should begin the application process
once they have completed seventy five (75) hours toward their undergraduate degree, including
credits earned from advanced placement.
Transfer students must meet the 75-hour requirement. They are also required to have completed a
minimum of two semesters as a full-time student at NC State (a minimum of 24 hours).
All students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in their undergraduate degree program
coursework and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.5 at the time of application to be considered for
participation in the ABM Program.
V. Program Admission
A prospective student who meets the eligibility requirements should schedule a meeting with the
DUP. The DUP will review the student’s academic credentials and progress toward the
undergraduate degree and then make the appropriate recommendation to the student and the DGP
to pursue formal application to the ABM program in TATM. If the student does not meet the
minimum GPA requirements or falls below these requirements during the application process,
he/she will not be eligible for admission and may continue progress toward the BS degree.
All students recommended by the DUP should schedule a meeting with the DGP by the end of the
second semester of the Junior year to reap the full benefits of the ABM program. The DGP will
help the eligible student to develop a Plan of Graduate Work that outlines how the student will
complete the required coursework and requirements for both the BS and master’s degrees within
the remaining 2-2.5 years of study. The Plan of Work must be approved by both the student’s
undergraduate academic advisor, DUP and DGP before the completion of the BS degree.
Students with an approved Plan of Work will be directed to make application to the Graduate
School seeking a Master’s degree in TATM. Applications consist of the standard Graduate School
Application form, application fee, official transcripts, a statement of purpose, and a Plan of Work
approved by the undergraduate adviser, DUP and DGP. With the exceptional academic
performance in their undergraduate program (a GPA of 3.5 or above), the Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) will not be required for applicants for the ABM program in TATM.
2
Application to the Graduate School constitutes formal application to the ABM Program in TATM.
The Graduate Programs Committee in the Department of TATM will review all applicants for the
program.
Students may not bypass the Bachelor of Science degree en route to the Master’s degree in TATM.
Plan of Work
Contents of the Plan of Work for a Master’s degree in Textiles (MT or MS) should contain the following,
consistent with the Graduate School’s ABM Plan of Work form available online at:
http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/faculty-and-staff/docs/forms/abm-plan-of-work.pdf
1. A list of graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student totaling no more than 12 credit hours
that will be double-counted toward both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
2. A list of graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student totaling up to a maximum of 6 credit
hours that will count toward the graduate degree only.
3. A list of all graduate courses that will be taken after admission to the graduate program.
4. Approval from the undergraduate academic adviser, DUP, and DGP in the department of TATM.

Special Arrangement for ABM students
1. 12 graduate credit hours may be double-counted for both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The 12 hours (4 courses) can be chosen from the list of recommended graduate level courses in
Textiles per the modified Degree Plan for their BS degree. The modified 8-semester Degree Plans
for each concentration in the two BS degrees (FTM and FTD) are attached at the end of this
proposal.
2. Additional hours must be earned to count toward the graduate degree only (a minimum of 24
hours for MS or 18 hours for MT).
VII. Requirements for Participation and Graduation
1. Students must complete the Bachelor’s degree prior to entering the Master’s program. Students in
the ABM program may not elect to bypass the Bachelor’s degree.
4
2. Students must complete all the degree requirements and unconditionally pass the Final Defense
(for MS students) within the Graduate School ABM designated time period of 12 months for the
MT degree or 18 months for the MS degree, after the completion of the BS degree. If the Master’s
degree is not completed within this timeframe, the student will no longer be eligible for the ABM
program and courses that were previously double-counted may no longer be eligible for credit
toward another graduate degree at NCSU.
VIII. Progress Requirements and Ineligibility/Withdrawal
1. Any student whose cumulative or major GPA drops below the established ABM Program
minimum requirements (3.5 cumulative GPA and 3.5 major GPA) upon graduation will be
ineligible to continue in the ABM Program, and will only be eligible for the Bachelor’s degree.
2. All ABM students must maintain a graduate GPA of at least 3.00 in all coursework being counted
toward the master’s degree, inclusive of courses taken as an undergraduate. Students may earn
credit for courses in which they have received a B, but the overall graduate GPA must remain
above 3.00. Any graduate student whose graduate GPA falls below 3.00 is subject to the graduate
school regulation.
3. The DGP and DUP must approve any courses that are substantially different from those submitted
in the Plan of Work. MS students must also receive approval from their graduate advisory
committee if they have already filed an official Plan of Work. Failure to consult with faculty in
either case will result in the student being dismissed from the ABM Program.
4. A student may withdraw from the ABM program in TATM at any time by submitting written
notification to the DGP. A copy of the notice should be sent to the NCSU Graduate School after a
student has submitted an application for graduate admission.
