DRAMA MOCK EXAM WOWS AUDIENCE SCIENCE WEEK COMPETITION WINNER BOOK DAY BAKE OFF A TASTY SUCCESS AcademyLife Newsletter April 2017 Dear Parents and carers Welcome to our Easter edition of Academy Life where we celebrate a number of pupil achievements as well as showcasing some of the fun events that have occurred in school. Schools have a main aim of ensuring that children leave with the best set of results possible. However, it is equally important that children have access to an enriched curriculum that teaches them far more than they need to achieve in their exams. I am always amazed at how committed our pupils and students are when it comes to extra-curricular activities, competitions, projects etc. They always respond well to something different. The recent Comic Relief day was a great success for two reasons. For the past two years that I have been Principal, the pupils have been asking for a non-uniform day. The school had not attempted to have a non-uniform day before, possibly out of fear that pupils may not work as hard in lessons, forget equipment, misbehave etc. However, our Comic Relief Day was fun, well-behaved and full of learning. The second successful reason was the amount raised, totalling £904.52. A magnificent achievement, well done to all, especially the pupils and students who baked and sold some delicious cakes! Our pupils and students love nothing more than helping others while having fun. Pupils and staff packed the hall for our annual ‘Lip Sync Battle’. I am pleased to report that over £140 was raised and this money will go towards the four House charities. Our community faces challenges and as a school we do all we can to support the community with the challenges. We hosted Paul Hannaford, who once again gave up his time to come to our school and speak with pupils, students and their families. He has a clear message that resonates with the community and we thank him for his committed support for us as we educate people around the dangers of drugs, alcohol and gang related issues. Spring is here and Easter shortly upon us. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Easter and hope you all manage to enjoy quality time with your family over the holiday period. Best wishes Mr D Luckhurst Principal

Dear Parents and carers

Welcome to our Easter edition of Academy Life where we celebrate a number of pupil achievements as well as showcasing some of the fun events that have occurred in school.

MULTICULTURAL WEEK 2017On the week of Monday 27th February we celebrated our annual Multicultural Week.

The purpose of Multicultural Week is to give both pupils and staff at Drapers’ Academy a chance to experience a range of different countries’ cultures and traditions that they may not have experienced before. We believe events like these are vital to spread tolerance and respect for different beliefs and traditions throughout our community and to broaden the horizons of our pupils. Every lunchtime during the week, different faculties ran lunchtime activities for pupils and staff to get involved in.Just some of the highlights included:

Music – who performed an African Drumming routine, encouraging all who wanted to join in.

Drama – who performed several fantastic French Mime routines to an enthralled crowd.

PE – who introduced our keen sports people to the world of Danish Long Ball.

Science – who celebrated Italian construction by running a competition to see who could build the tallest tower, using only spaghetti and marshmallows!

To complement the week’s Multicultural objective, our canteen staff prepared a range of different themed lunch menus, including special Indian, Italian and American dishes, which were all very well received by the pupils and staff. Multicultural week once again proved to be an invaluable experience for our pupils, providing immersive learning experiences which will stay with them for years to come.

Multicultural week organizer Karen Brown said, “Multicultural Week at Drapers’ Academy is one of the most excit-ing dates in our School Calendar. It is a chance for pupils and all staff to celebrate their cultures and embrace the diversity of our school.”

MAYOR’S MUSIC FUND FEBRUARYYear 7 pupil Aimee Dart has been awarded February’s ‘Scholar of the Month’ by The Mayor’s Music Fund for Young Londoners! Aimee was awarded a Mayors Music Scholarship in 2014. She was one of only two children in the Borough of Havering to be awarded that year. Since then, Aimee has continued to work exceptionally hard practising the Violin, and has gone from strength to strength with the support of the team at Havering music school and her tutor Mrs Lord.

Aimee’s continued hard work and dedication have resulted in her being awarded February’s ‘Scholar of the Month.’ Well done Aimee!

SAFE MARS LANDING!Friday 24th March saw our Science Week culminate in a whole school Egg Parachute competition at lunchtime. We constructed a Martian landscape and pupils tested their parachutes by dropping them off the first floor balcony. Most eggs made it down safe, with just a few breakages!

Congratulations to our winner Aaron Kiernan, who won first prize!

MEDICALMAVERICKSOn Tuesday 21st February, Medical Mavericks came into the school to deliver an exciting medical workshop to pupils in years 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

During the workshops pupils were able to use an ultrasound machine to view their heart, take an ECG recording of their heart activity and print it out, test their lung volume and peak flow, use a training machine to practise their skills at keyhole surgery, check their blood oxygen levels and blood pressure, look at replacement joints and discover how their vision would be impaired as a result of several illnesses and eye conditions.

The workshops were designed to open their eyes to the many professions within the medical world and to help them think about career options in the future.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it’s safe to say that we definitely have some budding doctors and nurses at Drapers’ Academy!

WORLD BOOK DAYWe had a fantastic turnout from pupils for our World Book Day Bake Off earlier this month. Pupils donated their home baked book themed cakes, which were sold off at lunch-time, raising a fantastic £83 for our house charities!

World Book Day also saw the launch of our annual Read-A-Thon, which as we go into the Easter Holiday is currently being led by Da Vinci house!

DRAMA MOCKYear 12 Drama students this week held their first mock exam. Performing in front of the rest of their year group, they demonstrated a thrilling performance which was very well received.

The Drama students and Mrs. Stanley were overwhelmed by the support received from peers, which really does demonstrate the wonderful and supportive cohort we have here at the Academy.

The students, along with other Drama pupils at The Academy can be seen performing in Lord of the Flies in April!
