Academy Performers Take the Stage with OrpheusMay 1, 2013

In April 2013, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra visited the Interlochen campus to conclude a months-

long partnership with students in several arts disciplines at Interlochen Arts Academy.

The performance on April 25 featured Orpheus performing Arnold Schoenberg's "Verklärte Nacht"

alongside Academy dancers, who had created their own original choreography. Visual artists and

design and production students contributed to the set design and choreography and creative writers

read original poetry inspired by Richard Dehmel's poem "Verklärte Nacht."

Gabriel Kahane, the composer in residence for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, also worked with

Academy singer-songwriter students before performing his new work "Gabriel's Guide to the 48

States."

"This is the first collaboration between Orpheus and an American high school, and speaks to our

continuing efforts to increase the visibility of Interlochen as a vital force in the world of the arts," wrote

Jeffrey Kimpton, president of Interlochen Center for the Arts. "There are few arts institutions willing to

take these efforts to create new artists and new work."

Academy Senior Prepares for Challenging Role in MissSaigonApril 30, 2013



“I’m hoping for fireworks and confetti to burst in peoples’ hearts,” jokes Interlochen Arts Academy

senior Marina Kondo when asked about the upcoming opening night for “Miss Saigon.”

Kondo has been cast as Kim, one of the lead roles in this heart-wrenching musical.

“I was actually with my mom on a road trip for a college audition when the cast list came out, so it

was nice to share the news with her,” Kondo recalls. “My heart was surprisingly filled with a whole

mix of emotions! At first I was incredibly happy, grateful, ready, excited and eager to start tackling my

first lead role ever. But then felt nervous and intimidated when I found out that this show is all music,

[and realized] how much endurance and strength I would have to build vocally to get through [it].”

But it’s a role that she has been preparing for years. Kondo first came to Interlochen the summer of

2010 as a camper. She was cast in the high school production of “Aida,” and has never looked back.

“It was the most amazing production I have ever done, because for the first time I understood what it

meant to be a part of an ensemble and focus all of your energy with everyone to one single thing,”

she recalls. “The outcome was magical and the friendships that I made during those six weeks are

still unbroken today. I absolutely fell in love with the atmosphere, faculty, and campers that I decided

to audition for the academy and continue my studies.”

Throughout the years Kondo has participated in Interlochen productions of "Dirty Rotten

Scoundrels," "Beauty and the Beast," "Julius Caesar," the Interlochen Arts Academy

50th Anniversary National Tour, "West Side Story," "Collage 2013" and "[title of show]".

Outside of Interlochen she has been featured on Ben E. King's new single album "Dear Japan:

Uewomuite Arukou"; sung at the Pendleton Round-Up in Oregon as a musical ambassador from

Japan; performed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Concert in front of the Genbaku Dome in

Japan; participated in a Music Marathon for Charity in Birmingham, Michigan; taken part in

the Eastern Seals Celebrating Kids Gala Concert; sung at the Kochi Summer Jazz Festival in Kochi,

Japan; performed at the International Kokeshi Matsuri (Japanese Doll Festival); and was featured in

a Japanese national TV program "Zenryoku Tunes" on JAPAN TV.

While she was familiar with “Miss Saigon” before being cast, from “listening to the soundtrack

hundreds of times” as she put it, Kondo still found this role to be a huge learning experience.

“I was shocked when I actually received my libretto and read though the songs, because it turns out

that there was so much that I was misinterpreting or just didn't know. It was so satisfying, though, to

have those 'aha' moments when I was able to understand the characters really well and figured out

the reasons why they made their particular choices.”

Kondo credits many of those ‘aha’ moments to an extremely talented cast and crew.

“What makes this performance so special are the people who are involved with making this show

happen - cast, crew, teachers – but most of all, I think it is the youth of the cast that makes

Interlochen's production so neat,” she explains. “Miss Saigon's story was taken directly from history

about the end of the Vietnam War so we, as actors, have to take responsibility in making sure that our

performance truthfully portrays that sense of fear, panic and chaos that lived in the people during that

time. Because we are high school students and our generation has never experienced these kinds of

events, it requires a certain maturity, and we must rely on what we are going through today.”

She points out that that’s why the Interlochen Arts Academy students are the right ones to stage this

show.

“Interlochen students are fully capable of taking on this incredible show because we come from all

parts of the world, bringing our own experiences and knowledge of history into one, giving Miss

Saigon a very worldly feel.”

The Interlochen Arts Academy Musical Theatre Company will present the musical “Miss Saigon” on

May 10 and 11 in Corson Auditorium. Shows will be held Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday,

May 11 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $22 for adults, $18 for seniors and $9

Alumnus Earns New Role with Canadian BrassMay 1, 2013

Just seven years after walking across the Kresge stage during the Academy’s 2006 commencement

ceremony, Caleb Hudson is walking into one of the most coveted positions in the world for a trumpet



player - a permanent position with the Canadian Brass.

“I am overwhelmed with excitement and also humbled by the invitation to be a part of this legendary

ensemble,” said Hudson (IAC 03-04, IAA 04-06). “Every young brass musician grows up listening to

the Canadian Brass and fantasizing about playing in a group like this. To see this happening in my

own life is surreal.”

This career opportunity materialized for Caleb unexpectedly after a call from an old college friend

and current member of the Canadian Brass, Chris Coletti. What appeared to be a simple invitation to

catch up and play some duets together turned out to be an audition. Soon after, he met with the rest

of the quintet, joined them in a rehearsal and then a performance. After his first show with the group,

Caleb was asked to become a permanent part of the ensemble.

Founded in 1970 by Chuck Daellenbach and Gene Watts, the Canadian Brass has thrived for four

decades, selling more than 2 million albums worldwide and regularly climbing their way to the top of

the Billboard Classical Charts. The group has performed around the world and has been seen on

television shows from "Sesame Street" to the "Tonight Show." Educating a new generation of

musicians has always been an essential element of the Canadian Brass. They regularly lead master

classes with students of all ages and are currently artists in residence at the University of Toronto.

For Caleb, the opportunity is more than just a chance to perform; it is an opportunity to inspire. “I hope

that I can inspire young musicians in the same way that I was inspired as a young kid. I have to say

that I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and sacrifice of so many people in my life.”

Originally from Lexington, Kentucky, Caleb began playing trumpet in his school band program at age

10. “From the first moment I heard his audition, I knew he would succeed,” said Ken Larson,

instructor of trumpet at Interlochen. “Vince Dimartino, another member of the summer faculty, went on

and on about a student who had applied. Even though Vince never mentioned a name, I knew

immediately he was talking about Caleb. After attending Camp in 2003 and 2004, Caleb went on to

attend the Academy for two years before studying at The Juillard School, earning his bachelor’s

degree in 2008 and his master’s in 2010.

In recent years, other trumpet players from the Interlochen trumpet studio have earned numerous

successes. In 2010, four Interlochen alumni took home honors at the National Trumpet Competition

including first place in the undergraduate and graduate divisions. Trumpet graduates from the

Academy regularly earn admission into top music programs including The Juilliard School, Eastman,

and the Oberlin Conservatory, among others.

Camp Spotlight: David Marek Joins MPA Summer FacultyMay 1, 2013

In the summer of 2013, filmmaker David Marek will join the Motion Picture Arts faculty to lead the

digital filmmaking program. The Traverse City native served as filmmaker in residence for the



Academy in the fall of 2012 and will lead the department while Michael Mittelstaedt, the director of

the motion picture arts program, is away on sabbatical to produce his own film.

"I am going to miss being at Camp this summer," said Mittelsteadt, "but I am very excited for the

sabbatical and the opportunity to create a new film. I'm looking forward to many new experiences that

that I will be able to bring back to the classroom at Camp and Academy."

Marek, who has served as filmmaker in residence at the Academy, will bring both expertise and

continuity to the summer program. "David brings a brilliant blend of professional directing, hands-on

location production and cinematic philosophy," said Mittelstaedt. "Motion Picture Arts campers will

have a phenomenal summer under his instruction. And for me, it's essential that we have a filmmaker

and educator of David's calibre in this role. With the program in such good hands, I will be able to

immerse myself in the preparation for my film and next steps for the camp and academy."

Marek earned undergraduate and gradate degrees in creative writing and film production from the

University of Colorado, where he won four production awards. His short films “Snow Petals” and

“Sleeping River” combined for 11 Official Selections and one win at film festivals. He went on to

teach at Colorado for four years and has produced or worked on 38 short films, five feature films, and

19 commercial shorts across genres and forms including narrative, documentary and animation. His

2011 feature film, "Somewhere West" has received eight Best Feature Film Awards, two Best

Cinematography Awards, and four additional awards from 18 festivals in three countries. He is the

co-founder of the Treefort Collective, where he works as a writer, producer, director and editor.

After working with the Academy students for a year, Marek is excited to continue his work at

Interlochen. "It's been really inspiring to see young artists start to bring their passion, talents and

education into focus on some very impressive projects," said Marek. "I'm really excited to be a part of

the Summer Camp and looking forward to introducing a new generation of young filmmakers and

writers to the art that I love. I mean, what could be better then spending six weeks on this beautiful

campus watching, talking, making and living film every day? And being surrounded by other

passionate artists ... I'm excited and honored."

Intelrochen's motion picture arts summer programs provide high school students with a progressive

and interdisciplinary experience in filmmaking. Students in the program develop their skills in visual

storytelling, screenwriting and production. In addition to the six-week digital filmmaking program, the

motion picture arts program offers three-week programs in animation, screenwriting and documentary

filmmaking. All fully-completed works are featured in an end-of-camp showcase in the DeRoy Center

for Film Studies.

Academy Students Earn High Honors in 2013 ScholasticAwardsMay 1, 2013



Ten Academy students earned national recognition through the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing

Awards. Students' works were blindly adjudicated, first locally through the 116 affiliates of the

Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the presenting nonprofit of the Awards, and then nationally by

panels of judges comprised of renowned artists, authors, educators and arts professionals. This

year’s list of jurors included Edwidge Danticat, Myla Goldberg, Kurt Andersen, Althea Harper, Red

Grooms and Andres Serrano. Works were judged on originality, technical skill and the emergence of

personal vision or voice. Teachers of national winners were also recognized with awards.

2013 marks the 90th anniversary of the Awards, and this year’s program attracted more than 230,000

submissions in 28 categories, including dramatic script, journalism, humor, novel-writing and

science-fiction as well as painting, sculpture, photography, fashion design, film and animation, and

video game design, among others.

In the summer of 2013, Interlochen Arts Camp will welcome a group of young actors, dancers and

singers for the inaugural summer of the junior musical theatre production program. For six weeks, the



students will work with faculty and staff on a production of “Dear Edwina,” which they will perform at

the end of the summer.

While musical theatre has been part of Interlochen Arts Camp, in some form, since the earliest years

of the summer program, there has not been a dedicated six-week musical theatre program for juniors

until now.

Bill Church, director of the theatre program at Interlochen, noted that there has always been

considerable interest in expanding the program to include younger performers. “Our high school and

intermediate musical theatre programs give young actors an incredible opportunity: to take students

from nothing to a full production in six short weeks. It is an amazing learning experience, and we are

thrilled to extend this opportunity to our junior campers.”

Students in the program will develop their performance skills further, learn the value of working as an

ensemble and, most importantly, they will have fun! Daily class and rehearsals will be filled with

movement, dancing, singing, acting and exploration through the imagination.

“My teaching approach will focus on helping students work in an ensemble,” said Johamy Morales,

the director of the program. “As with any Interlochen program, we will maintain high expectations. But

the emphasis will be on creating a strong individual and artistic foundation for them to succeed as

young artist as they go forward in the future. We want all these students to reach their potential.”

The production was selected with the needs of junior campers in mind. "Dear Edwina" is an

educational, inspiring and fun musical that tells the story of Edwina Spoonapple, a young girl who is

in search of recognition and notoriety. Edwina runs a show called The Dear Edwina Show, where

people from around town send her letters in hopes of receiving her invaluable advice. Through the

help of her family, friends and aspirations, she discovers the true meaning of giving back.

“Dear Edwina" shares many universal children's struggles and questions: identity, sense of

belonging and the results of giving back,” explained Morales. “This musical also gives these young

actors the opportunity to learn about the craft of acting and how to tell a story through song and

dance.”

Academy Prepares Finale for the 2012-13 YearMay 1, 2013

As the 2012-13 Academy year draws to a conclusion, students, faculty and staff are gearing up for

the year's finale: Festival Week. The annual celebration of arts and creativity will take place on May



23 and 24, with dozens of performances and presentations of student work scheduled to take place

over two short days.

From the jazz ensemble to Shakespeare and film showings, the two-day festival gives parents,

friends, family and other arts supporters an opportunity to see the results of one year of hard work

and artistic dedication. While admittance to the performances is free, some events are ticketed with

priority being given to family members of students who are performing.

The week will conclude with the Commencement Ceremony for the 51st graduating class of

Interlochen Arts Academy, which will take place on Saturday, May 25 at 9:30 a.m.

Life-Long Love of Music Inspires Support of IPRMay 1, 2013

Marlis Mann begins her day with coffee and Interlochen Public Radio, and throughout the day the

sounds of Classical IPR’s music programming fill the Leland, Michigan home she shares with her



husband, television program executive Tom Skinner. As one of IPR’s biggest fans and supporters,

Marlis recently increased her financial commitment to IPR. Explaining her decision, she says, “There

are very few organizations in our region that have made significant contributions to the quality of my

life and the life of my friends and family. IPR is among the organizations at the top of that list.”

Marlis’s love affair with music began during her pre-World War II childhood in Braunschweig,

Germany, where she was surrounded by classical music. Her father managed a restaurant that often

featured live music, perhaps even a full chorus or orchestra. With the arrival of American troops at the

end of the war, she was introduced to American music, like Glen Miller, and added jazz to the list of

music that she loved. Even her time as a Lufthansa flight attendant was shaped by music, Marlis

recalls, describing the wonderful classical music tapes they gave to first class passengers aboard the

Super Constellation aircraft during the 22-hour flights between Hamburg and Chicago.

She married an American soldier, the late David B. Mann, and they settled in Chicago where they

raised their two children, Tom and Kit. Marlis discovered Interlochen Public Radio during summer

visits to Leland, and she made her first gift in 1990 during an on-air campaign. “Everyone sounded

like they were having so much fun,” she says, noting that the camaraderie among the staff and

volunteers that she heard on the radio motivated her to pick up the phone and make that first pledge.

She went on to experience some of that camaraderie herself, joining the staff and other IPR

supporters on a trip to Austria, Germany and Slovakia in 2006.

One reason Marlis continues to support IPR is that she loves the programming that fills her home

every day. She appreciates the local programming that IPR produces: Saturday morning’s “Music By

Request,” a call-in request show hosted by IPR general manager Thom Paulson; “Island Cabin

Discs,” which features Interlochen Center for the Arts president Jeff Kimpton interviewing guests

about their must-have musical selections; the “New Jazz Archive” with Michigan jazz composer and

musician Jeff Haas; and especially “The Story Next Door” with Scott Craig.

But Marlis stresses that classical music and Interlochen Public Radio are important for reasons

beyond her own enjoyment. “Music is the language of the world,” she says. “These programs are so

important.” Her hope is that many others, especially young people, will discover the joy of classical

music through IPR.

As IPR celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, supporters like Marlis ensure that IPR continues to

enhance the lives of listeners in northern Michigan and beyond. “Think about how IPR has

contributed to the quality of your life,” challenges Marlis. “Multiply that by thousands of listeners times

50 years. This is a very appropriate time to say thank you with a commitment to IPR.”

Writers Retreat Welcomes New Faculty for Summer of2013May 1, 2013



In recent years, the Writers Retreat [1] at Interlochen College of Creative Arts has attracted writers

from around the country to study memoir, poetry and fiction, but this summer the curriculum has

expanded to include another genre: children’s fiction. To teach the new program, Interlochen will

welcome Louise Hawes, a noted author of fifteen books for children, teenagers and adults. Poet

James Arthur will also join the faculty for the summer of 2013.

Hawes’ books have earned numerous honors including nominations for the Young Adult Book of the

Year and recognition from the Children’s Book Council and the International Reading Association.

She has lectured at several schools, colleges and universities, served as John Grisham Visiting

Author at the University of Mississippi, writer in residence at the University of New Mexico, and is

currently on the faculty at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

"I love generative workshops, where you produce writing you can take home and run with,” said

Hawes. “Of course, at Interlochen, we may have to fight the impulse to take ‘lake breaks’ every few

pages--what a splendid setting!"

In addition to the new children’s literature track, the writer's retreat will welcome several returning

favorites including memoir writing with Anne Marie Oomen, poetry with James Arthur, and fiction with

Patricia Ann McNair. Participating writers will focus on one genre but they will have many

opportunities to meet with all retreat participants in large group sessions.

“I'm thrilled to have been invited to teach at the writer's retreat this year,” said James Arthur, who will

teach poetry at the retreat. “The Interlochen campus is one of the most beautiful places I've ever

been, and all year round, it's rich with artistic creation; I just can't imagine a more inspiring or more

welcoming environment in which to write.” Arthur, a Hodder Fellow at Princeton University, is also a

recipient of the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Poetry, a

residency at the Amy Clampitt House, and a Discovery/The Nation Prize. His poems have appeared

in "The New Yorker," "The New Republic," "Poetry," "Ploughshares," and "The American Poetry

Review," and his debut poetry collection is available from Copper Canyon Press as a Lannan

Literary Selection.

Writers will spend four days writing new material in the genre of their choice and attending craft talks

and evening readings by award-winning faculty. Through the retreat, writers will learn to sharpen

images, improve dialogue, deepen metaphors and grow in styles and voices of their own.

Remembering Jim Bob StephensonMay 1, 2013

Jim Bob Stephenson, Ph.D. (IAC Fac 55-66, IAC St 87-05) was deeply involved in theatre throughout

his life and a fixture at Interlochen Arts Camp for decades. Stephenson joined the Camp theatre



faculty in the 50s and later returned to assist his brother Clarence (Dude) Stephenson, producing the

high school operettas and intermediate musicals and revue.

Cast in his first play, an Ann Arbor Children’s Theater production, when he was just 11 years old,

theatre was a lifelong passion for Stephenson. He went on to perform in productions including

professional radio and television acting on WWJ Detroit. He was an instructor of theatre at the

University of Michigan for ten years, associate professor of theatre at Kansas State University for

three years, visiting professor at Southern Illinois University for two years, and professor of theatre at

Kent State University for 23 years. At 90 years old, he taught a seminar on Shakespeare for the

Commission on Aging. Over the course of his career, Jim Bob directed over 200 stage productions

and performed in over 150.

"Jim Bob Stephenson was the kind of man and educator that I would hope all of us aspire to be

whether we teach at Camp or Academy," said David Montee, who worked in the theatre program

alongside Stephenson for many years. "Besides being knowledgeable and talented in his art, he

was gentle, funny, generous, enthusiastic, and completely devoted to the principles that he believed

that Joe Maddy embraced … Jim Bob's integrity and his unselfish and often unsung commitment to

his work helped build Interlochen's summer theatre program steadily through the decades."



From the Archives with Byron Hanson: May 2013May 1, 2013

April 21-22, 1970 Janos Starker, Bernhard and Cola Heiden visit the Arts Academy.

The passing of the eminent cellist this weekend awakened the memory of his first visit to our campus.

For two very intense days, we were all fascinated by Starker’s masterful performance and

authoritative teaching. Indeed, his manner in a masterclass was like that of a biblical prophet, leaving

no room for dissent, and no doubt that his prescription and no other was exactly what the students

must follow to solve their deficiencies and make their music speak. In Professor Heiden’s

lecture/recital the first night, the Heidens played his "Sonata for Piano, Four Hands," students played

his "Wind Quintet," and Janos and Bernhard performed the "Sonata for Cello and Piano." The next

evening’s orchestra concert opened with Mr. Starker the soloist in the first American performance of



Heiden’s 1967 "Concerto for Violoncello" and Orchestra, which was dedicated to Starker. The

orchestra played Kodaly’s "Hary Janos Suite," and the program closed with Mr. Starker the soloist

once again in Tchaikowsky’s "Rococo Variations."

Interlochen has been fortunate to hear performances by a number of other European musicians

trained between the two World Wars - Alexander Schneider, Josef Gingold, and Lady Evelyn

Barbirolli come to mind - but we had to wait nearly 40 years to hear Janos Starker again, this time in

a performance of the Dvořák "Concerto" with the Academy Orchestra. A new generation of students,

community and musicians from far and wide was thus privileged to hear this master artist-teacher in

his 74th year -- and perhaps the last of that great dynasty to grace our stage.

Hildegarde Lewis (c.1899-1951) Last month we tried to relay our excitement in discovering that a

sculpture, long-resident in our concourse, turned out to have been the work of the prominent Irish -

American artist, Dennis B. Sheahan. This prompted an alert alumnus to ask if we knew whatever

became of the bas-relief sculpture of Hildegarde Lewis, the woman who initiated dance instruction at

Camp in 1940. There are still lots of mysteries in our archival treasure chest, but I immediately

remembered a bronze piece with no markings that I’d puzzled over a few years back. I brought it to

Kathy Perez and within minutes she found a good photo of Ms. Lewis that settled the matter.

So, as many of you decide the time has come to sort out long-neglected photos, programs and other

items you once treasured but perhaps don’t even remember why, please think of us, ask questions,

and perhaps we can piece together some history for our mutual benefit. We are particularly interested

in the early 1940s when wartime rationing may have been one reason we have very little program

material and many gaps to fill.

is now pursuing educational projects in American, World and Christian History; Classical,

Enlightenment, and Integral Philosophy; Advanced Spirituality; Cosmology, Theoretical Physics, and

fundamental math concepts; writing poetry; serving as officer in the Urantia Society of North Texas

and as Board Member of The Gathering Place Church of Dallas, Texas; Urantia Book enthusiast.

Kevin Cole (IAC 72, IAA 76-77) will perform with Sylvia Mcnair at Interlochen on July 12, 2013 at

Corson Auditorium as part of the Interlochen Presents summer lineup.

Dr. Stella Sung's (IAC 72-73, UW 78, 80, IAC Fac 93) composition, "Loco-Motion" will be performed

by the World Youth Symphony Orchestra this summer in the Kresge Auditorium on July 7, 2013.

Lynn Ellen Queen (IAC 73-74, IAA 75-76) serves as a corporate department executive for

LeClaireRyan.



Kathleen Kaska Perez (IAC 75-76, IAC St 84-89, 97-02, ICA Staff 02-13) has accepted a position

with the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center development office in Fort

Lauderdale, Florida.

James Adelman (IAC 76, IAA 76-77, IAC St 80) is the founder of the Sugar House Art Walk in Salt

Lake City, Utah. "Art Thrives in Sugar House" thanks to my his son and Camp alumnus Nicholas

Adelman (IAC 09-10).

Diane (Holcomb) Wilshere (IAA 77-79) delivered a paper titled "I am a Plain Dealing Villain:

Portraying Thomas Cromwell at the Maryland Renaissance Festival" at the 2013 Popular Cultural

Association/American Cultural Association National Conference held in Washington DC on March

27.

Laura Caballero IAA 79-81) married Rob Bach (IAA 76-80) after getting engaged at the Academy's

50th anniversary celebration. This marriage of music and art will thrive in Wisconsin where all things

grow like crazy. The wedding was officiated by John Hegner (IAC 76-77, IAA 78-81, IAA Fac 03) at

the local Starbucks, though a repeat performance in San Diego is planned for June 8.

Charles “Chuck” Johnson (IAA St 80-84, IAC St 81-84) was featured in the April 2013 issue of "Shine

On Hollywood" magazine.

Brenda Kosky Deskin's (IAC 81-83) article "Autism, Music and a Mother's Dream" was published by

Parents Magazine. Brenda is the founder and editor of autismbeacon.com

Anthony Rapp (IAC 85-86) will perform in a one night only performance of "The Night Larry Kramer

Kissed Me" on May 20, 2013. The performance benefits Broadway Care/Equity Fights AIDS and the

SERO Project.

Kirsten Bedway (IAA 86-88) recently completed the writing program at Second City in Chicago,

Illinois, culminating in a five-week performance of the sketch comedy show Aim Low Sweet Patriot,

which she both wrote for and assistant directed.

Aaron Dworkin (IAA 86-88) was elected to the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) as an honorary

member.

Joseph Portolese (IAA 88-90) works for Federated Media Publishing, Inc. as a senior manager of ad

trafficking.

Derek Frank (IAC 89-90, IAA 90-91) will be playing bass on tour with singer Victoria Justice this

summer. This will be Derek's second tour with the young singer, and the concert schedule can be

Gary L. Gatzke Jr. (AS 92, 94, HSB 95, IAA 96-98, ICA 06-Present) was presented with an Applause

Award by the Interlochen Alumni Organization Council during their spring meeting. The Applause

Award is presented to an outstanding faculty or staff member in recognition of exceptional service

and concern for Interlochen during their employment.

Cynthia (Rice) Ellingsen's (IAA 94-95, IAC St 95) contemporary fiction novel, "Marriage Matters" was

released by Penguin-Berkley. A story about a mother, daughter and granddaughter who all get

engaged at the same time and decide to share a wedding, "Marriage Matters" is Cynthia's second

novel. Her first, "The Whole Package", was released in 2011.

Matthew Lurie (IAC 94-95) self-produced, wrote and performed on his debut album, "Girl Next To The

Girl Next Door" with his Los Angeles-based band, Matthew and the Mainstream. The album is

available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers.

Laura Kaufmann (IAC 95-97, IAC St 99, IAOC 12-Present) announces her engagement to Gregg

Arst.

Jonathan Lombardo (IAC 95, IAA 96-00) along with Timothy Smith and Jeff Dee will be the featured

trombonist soloists with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra on June 30, 2013 at Kresge

Auditorium.

Dorothea Mead (IAC 95-96) will hold a CelloChanWoods retreat camp in Chelsea, Michigan this

summer for ages 13-adult. The workshop will provide a deepening of the cellistic artist's awareness

through a focus on well-being and the arts.

Alexandra "Al" Silber (IAC 95-99, IAA 99-01, IAC St 01-02) and Santino Fontana (IAC 99), along

with The Collegiate Chorale and an array of Broadway stars, presented in concert "Song of Norway"

on April 30, 2013 at Carnegie Hall.

Ian Whitney (IAA 96-98) is now Sales Associate at Doug Mayberry Real Estate in Key West, Florida.

Josh Groban (IAC 97-98) will return to Interlochen on August 12, 2013 to perform as part of the 2013

Summer Arts Festival series. Josh will perform with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra comprised of

local musicians.

Joseph "Joe" Kwon (IAC 97) is the cellist with The Avett Brothers Band and will perform at

Interlochen on July 1, 2013 as part of the 2013 Summer Arts Festival.

Sara Fay (IAC 99-03, IAC St 07) was named the editor of Time Out Los Angeles. She has worked as

a journalist in Los Angeles and Chicago for several years after graduating from the Medill School of

Journalism at Northwestern University.

Jeng-Tyng Hong (IAC 99-00) is attending Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Margaret Rood (AS 99-00, IAA 01-03) will perform the lead in Ned Rorem's operatic rendering of

Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" to be performed at Peterborough Town Hall as part of Monadnock

Music in New Hampshire. She will play Emily Webb in a production conducted and directed by

festival artistic director Gil Rose. In addition to her solo work, Margot has an active performance

career as a professional ensemble singer, performing with groups such as the Santa Fe Desert

Chorale, Tucson Chamber Artists, Handel and Haydn Society, Lorelei Ensemble, la Chapelle de

Quebec, and the Grammy Nominated vocal ensemble Seraphic Fire.

Phoebe Rusch (IAC 00-01, IAA 05-07) was accepted to the M.F.A. program at the University of

Michigan in Creative Writing.

Caroline Goulding (IAC 02-03) will perform Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major with the Traverse

Symphony Orchestra on May 11 and 12 at the First Congregational Church on the Old Mission

(Robert) Kit Williamson's (IAA 02-04) plays Cal in the show "EastSiders," which has announced a

Zach Villa (IAA 03-05) appeared on NCSI Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 23. Zach joins an

Interlochen rich cast including Linda Hunt (IAA 62-64) and Barrett Foa (IAC 92-95).

Adison Evans (IAC 06, IAA 06-08) is performing "The Mrs. Carter Show" world tour with Beyonce.

She joined Beyonce's band eight months ago and is playing alto sax in her band the "Suga Mamas."

performance at Northwestern University beginning in the fall of 2013.
