BDA INTRODUCES PRAYER STATIONS
This week the chapel was transformed into
an interactive space and pupils had the
opportunity to engage with various ‘prayer
stations’.
It was excellent to see pupils writing prayers
for family and friends and thinking carefully
about which areas in the world they
wanted to pray for before sticking a dot on
a map.
There were opportunities to say ‘sorry’ and
to forgive others symbolically and many
students said they particularly enjoyed the
‘Big Questions’ wall where they were
encouraged to write down what they
wanted to ask God.
The prayer space will remain open at times
throughout the week until half term and
any students who have not managed to
visit are invited at lunchtimes.
Sixth form students receive Duke of Edinburgh awards
Over the past few months, we have closely
followed our students’ progress through the
various levels of the Duke of Edinburgh
scheme.
As such, it was with great pride we
witnessed them receive their certificates at
the Town Hall to mark the completion of this
rigorous and rewarding scheme!

OXBRIDGE PROJECT UPDATE:
THE REFORMATION
Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Carr-Jones came
into the Oxbridge Project to deliver a talk
about music at the time of the Reformation.
For the people that do not know about it,
the Reformation, also referred to as “The
Break with Rome”, was when Martin Luther -
a German monk- wanted to change 95
things about the Catholic Church. As a
result of the 95 fleeces, the “West” (from
Croatia) was battling the “East” and many
Catholic Christians killed Protestants and
vice versa.
At the end of this first conversation we all
reflected on a Catholic saying: “As soon as
the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from
purgatory will spring”. What do you think
about it?
On a second argument about this, we
discussed how the music changed during
this period of time. For example we heard
“O, Wilhelme, pastor bone” and “Salve
Regina”, Catholic songs that monks would
sing before the Reformation. We also
learned how Protestants translated all the
songs from Latin to the language spoken in
that specific country.
In order to understand the differences
between the two, we all sang a hymn. It
was a really fun thing to do!
So thank you Mr. Carr-Jones for coming
and teaching Oxbridge and teaching us all
of these wonderful things.

Year 8 impress at borough Indoor Athletics
Last Thursday BDA boys and girls Indoor
Athletics team represented us in the inter -
borough competition at Hammersmith
Academy. Both teams performed well and
were a credit to the school.
The girls’ team worked so hard and came
third overall from 6 schools, with only 30
points separated them from the winners.
The boys were excellent and had to work
extra hard due to a reduced team. They
were rewarded with a victory and were
crowned borough champions.
The boys’ team will now go on to represent
Hammersmith in the West London Finals.
Congratulations for all the hard work and
dedication displayed by every team
member!

LIBRARY NEWS
It’s week three and many classes have
made terrific progress in the library. A
number of students have already reached
their targets for this term and are continuing
to read novels that they both enjoy and will
improve their reading. Well done to 7D, in
particular, for working hard after school this
week to get lots of quizzes done. If you
have not quizzed since Christmas, you have
two weeks in order to reach your target.
Good luck!
In order to get those all-important hundred
per cents you need to be borrowing books
and reading at home as well as in school.
Many students are excellent at borrowing,
renewing and returning books. However, if
you are one of the exceptions that have a
book sitting under the bed or at the bottom
of your bag, we need it back so someone
else can read it! We will be speaking to
students with overdue books in lessons and
it is really important that they come back. If
you have any concerns or you have lost a
book please speak to a librarian.
There is a lot going on in the library beyond
lessons this term. For one, students have
begun to get involved in this year’s Stan
Lee Excelsior Book Award, the nation’s
search for the best graphic novel of the
year. We have had lots of votes in already
and both ‘Bunny versus Monkey’ and
‘Alone’ look like early favourites! We have
copies of all shortlisted books in the library
so if you want to get involved just ask a
librarian. There will be a great prize for our
best graphic novel reader; the student who
has read and voted on the most titles.
Finally, World Book Day is just over a month
away! There will be lots going on in the
library, which we will announce soon…
Book Review
Zom-B by Darren Shan
Darren Shan is the master of horror, and is
widely known for his gruesome stories in
both the ‘Cirque Du Freak’ and
‘Demonata’ Series’. Now he’s back with a
new horror series, Zom-B.
Zom-B follows the story of ‘B’, a rough kid
with a habit of bullying, as a zombie
invasion starts to spread throughout the UK.
B’s Dad is a vile character: racist, abusive
and violent, and I love the way Darren
Shan doesn’t hold back in describing him.
Though B is later shown to be something of
a bully too, we completely understand as
we have already seen the interactions with
B’s father. B’s father is dismissive of the news
reports on a zombie attack in Ireland,
calling it a hoax, and saying it is all a
publicity stunt. B is not so sure, and when a
creepy ‘family friend’ comes to call, it
seems to tie in with the coming zombie
apocalypse.
Though this book has all the requisite terror,
with zombie’s digging fingers into people’s
skulls, and arms being ripped off, it is also a
really interesting read dealing with racism,
and B’s struggle to deal with a dad who he
knows is horrible, but loves anyway. I highly
recommend this book!
