THE INTERCULTURAL EXPERIENCE 23

Welcome from the Rector

My name is Francisco Toledo and I am the Rector of Universitat Jaume I in Castelló. I would like you to know who I am and where to find me as we are going to be together for a while and I am sure we are also going to need each other at some time or another.

Our job here at Universitat Jaume I is to further your education, both intellectually and professionally, as well as we can, and the main commitment of both our teaching and administrative staff is to achieve that objective. But we would also like your stay at UJI to be a fundamental experience in your education as a person.

Whether this is your first time at university or whether you have decided to take your higher education a step further, you are about to begin a new stage in your life that will be quite different from what you have experienced up till now. It will not only be new from the point of view of your education but also as regards the new framework of personal relations that anyone faces at a modern-day university. As you begin this new stage in your education, I want to assure you that here at UJI there are many people who are going to do everything they can to help make your stay here as fruitful and rewarding as possible.

During the time you spend with us you are going to acquire a huge amount of knowledge and information that will prepare you for your future career. I like to think that, on leaving our University, you will also be taking with you a series of values that will complement those you have undoubtedly received from your family and local community, as well as from your own experience of life.

One of the aims of this Guide, apart from welcoming you to our University, is to tell you what the values of our corporate culture are. By this I am referring to the basic principles we share, those we believe in and which go to make up the fundamental guidelines behind our individual and collective behaviour within Universitat Jaume I.

Our University, like other public universities in Spain, enjoys a large degree of autonomy. This means that UJI is, and will be, what those of us who work and study here want it to be. From this very instant, I invite you to become a fully integrated member of our University by taking part in any of the different ways on offer. I also encourage you to freely express your opinions and to put forward any proposals that might improve the way the University is run and, consequently, your education.

Let’s all join together to make UJI a place where tolerance and understanding are vital features, a place that fosters the acquisition of knowledge and the free exchange of ideas, and where our best wishes – both yours and those of this young institution – can come true. Welcome, again, to our University.

The Rector

What does UJI offer?

SMALL GROUPS AND A PRACTICAL METHODOLOGY

At present, 28 continuously assessed degree and diploma courses are available to about 13 500 students. These figures allow the University to offer its students personalised attention and to remain free of the problems of overcrowding so often suffered by other universities. Moreover, the syllabi of the different subjects are designed to allow students to see how the material being taught can be applied in practice while it is still scientifically thorough and accurate. The existence of small groups in the practical classes and in the laboratory fosters this teaching approach.

Time is very different here and people spend more time outside in plazas with friends. The food is different as well, but very good!

WELCOME TO UNIVERSITAT JAUME I IN CASTELLÓ

What is Universitat Jaume I?

Universitat Jaume I (UJI) came into being as a higher education and research centre on 27 February 1991 to meet the unanimous social demand in the Castelló area. It was also the fruit of a tradition in education inherited from the Teacher Training studies at the old University College of Castelló (Col·legi Universitari de Castelló, CUC), which dated from 1969. From the moment it was set up, UJI has strived to become a modern, high quality university with a clearly European orientation as well as to attain a level of excellence in the teaching, research and services it offers society.

Universitat Jaume I is currently the leading higher education and research centre in the north of the Valencian Community and it is continually seeking to enhance the social, economic and cultural development of the society in which it is immersed through the creation and transmission of knowledge. In this sense UJI has always tried to play an active role, as shown by initiatives such as the opening of new off-campus offices in the different areas throughout the province of Castelló, its extra-mural activities, or its collaboration with different institutions in the local community.

Today, Universitat Jaume I has consolidated itself as a dynamic and enterprising university. It teaches new, flexible and competitive curricula and programmes of study that enable students to cope with every challenge set by modern society in a satisfactory manner. The interdisciplinary nature of Universitat Jaume I guarantees students’ autonomy and increases their chances of getting a job in the future thanks to work placements and exchange programmes, such as the Socrates-Erasmus Programme, the UJI USA Study Scholarship Programme and other international programmes that enable students to follow their studies abroad.

This effort to keep ourselves in the vanguard of science and technology is complemented with a humanist education that helps students to complete their training as professionals and as citizens.

USE OF THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Being fully aware that communication and creativity are the most important instruments for the future, Universitat Jaume I is a pioneer in the use of the new information technologies to disseminate knowledge. Universitat Jaume I was the first academic institution in Spain to become part of the World Wide Web (WWW) and to develop a browser (Dónde?) that could be used to search for information on the Internet. It has also become the first Spanish university to have a Centre for Education and New Technologies (CENT) with a direct link to primary and secondary schools. All the university courses include subjects offering basic instruction in IT and many of the subjects are taught using computers in the practical sessions.Furthermore, in order to improve the teaching quality, UJI is the first university in Spain to install in each one of its lecture rooms, audiovisuals equipment and computers provided with Internet connection incorporated into the lectures’ tables.

LANGUAGES

Since it was set up, Universitat Jaume I has always seen knowledge of languages to be an essential part of its students’ learning process. It is for this reason that the syllabi in each degree or diploma course include subjects in which students learn languages adapted to the needs and particularities of each area of knowledge.

In addition, students can acquire and consolidate suitable levels of proficiency in different languages by making use of the self-learning activities organised by the Self-Access Language Centre (CAL).

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Universitat Jaume I has a wide network of international contacts made up of about 145 university-partners in Europe, the United States and Latin America, and this system has given rise to exchange programmes involving students and members of the academic staff, as well as educational and research projects.

Universitat Jaume I participates in all the main international programmes implemented throughout the European Union (e.g. Socrates-Erasmus, Tempus and Alfa) and also those organised by the Spanish government (such as the Interuniversity Cooperation Programme). The University also carries out a number of other international programmes and schemes, some of the more noteworthy of which include the UNESCO Chair on the Philosophy of Peace, the Jean Monnet Chair of Law and European Economics Module, the EURINSA and EURUJI programmes for the training of engineers in Europe and, finally, the programme of Master’s Degrees in Latin American universities.

This large number of contacts can be accounted for by the University’s commitment to international relations and collaboration, as set out in its Statutes. Furthermore, the province of Castelló has a strong tradition in exportation and tourism which drives it to cooperate with the foreign countries.

5

EMPLOYABILITY

The interdisciplinary character of Universitat Jaume I guarantees the autonomy of students and opens up more chances for them to get a job. In fact, all our curricula contain periods of practical training for all students, and these must be carried out in enterprises and institutions. The nature of these work placements is not occupational but academic. Their purpose is to provide students with experience of the real institutional, business and occupational situation of their respective professions in a local context by giving them the chance to acquire basic professional competencies and put them into practice.

Since the year 2000, UJI also offers its students the chance to take part in the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, which was created by the EU to promote education and professional training on a European level, thus facilitating the acquisition of the skills and competencies students need to cope with their future career.

Castelló

Castelló is the northernmost province in the Valencian Community. The town of Castelló de la Plana is 65 km to the north of València and 285 km to the south of Barcelona. More precisely, it is situated at the point where the 40º parallel and the Greenwich meridian cross, between the mountains and the sea, and is surrounded by orange groves.

It has 112 km of Mediterranean coastline and, therefore, a large number of very clean and beautiful beaches. The port handles a large percentage of the province’s exports, which are one of the foundations on which the local economy rests. The main industries in the area are agriculture, tourism and, above all, the ceramic tile industry, as Castelló is the second most important tile manufacturer in the world.

The climate depends essentially on two factors: the sea and the protection against cold winds from the northeast afforded by the mountainous barrier of the Desert de les Palmes. The factors have a decisive influence on the average annual temperature (17º C), which makes it possible to practise outdoor activities nearly all year round.

Castelló is a small town – you can walk across it from north to south in under an hour. It now has a population of over 166.000, split between the town of Castelló itself and the maritime district of the Grau, which is just a five-minute drive away from the town centre. The inhabitants of the Grau (Port) are descendents of a traditionally sea-going population, as this is the area where the town’s recently refurbished port is situated. Its new layout has allowed a wide boulevard to be built following the sea, along with a large number of leisure facilities where many of the locals meet, especially at the weekend.

How to get to Castelló

It is not possible to fly directly to Castelló as the town itself does not have an airport. It is, however, well connected to some of the country’s leading airports. The nearest is in València (65 km away; 1 hr), but the town is also very well connected to the airports in Barcelona (285 km; 2 hrs), Alacant/Alicante (231 km; 2.5 hrs) or Madrid (415 km; 5 hrs). From these points the best ways to get to Castelló are by bus or train. The railway and bus station is very close to the University and the town centre.

Road access is also very good because both the N-340 main trunk road and the A7 motorway (the so-called Autopista del Mediterráneo) run through Castelló, the latter providing a direct route to the town from both Barcelona and Alicante. This motorway also links up to the main dual carriageway to Madrid.

The “Campus” University Residence

The “Campus” Residence University was officially opened in September 2002. This option is more suitable for students who are going to stay for the whole academic year, although rooms can also be booked for a semester. The residence is on the University campus, behind the Library and the Sports Pavilion. The Campus is a 10-minute bus ride away from the town centre.

The price of accommodation is about 283 ¤ per month (academic year 2005/2006). For longer stays, you have several different types of accommodation available to you.

Further information can be obtained at the following address:http://www.residenciascampus.com

Other residences

Residencia Domus María

This two residence is located very near the town centre and is well linked to the University campus by the municipal bus service. Information about how you can get in touch with this residence is available on the following web page:http://www.uji.es/infoest/monuji/residen.html

Student flats and apartments

In Spain, students very often share a flat. INFOCAMPUS at the University offers information about flats or rooms to let, flat-sharing and residences through the Accommodation Directory (Borsa d’Allotjament). This service gathers all the addresses of flats for students. Such information is freely available to any student who may require accommodation while studying at UJI.

Under no circumstances, however, do INFOCAMPUS act as accommodation or estate agency. You can contact the Accommodation Directory run by INFOCAMPUS at the following address:http://www.uji.es/CA/canals/infocampus

We recommend you look for a flat once you are in Castelló. While you are flat-hunting you can find temporary accommodation in a residence, boarding house or hostel, for example. http://www.uji.es/serveis/otci/prog/hotel.thtml

WHERE TO STAY

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS OFFERED

Universitat Jaume I prepares students for official State qualifications, as well as others issued by the University itself.

The official qualifications are structured in cycles (first, second and third), whereas those issued by the University itself are mostly postgraduate studies.

First cycle studies (3 years). These are known as Diplomas (Diplomatura) or Technical Engineering (Enginyeria Tècnica) degrees. They last three years and include, apart from the core and general training subjects, contents geared towards preparing students to exercise a professional career. On successfully completing these studies you are given a Diploma or you are a Quantity Surveyor (arquitecte tècnic) or Technical Engineer (enginyer tècnic). These studies grant access to postgraduate courses but not Doctoral studies.

Second cycle studies (2/3+2/3 years). These courses are either Bachelors’ degrees (Llicenciatura) or Higher Engineering (Enginyeria superior) degrees. They consist in a first cycle that lasts a minimum of two years, in which students are taught the basic general knowledge needed in their speciality. This is then followed by a second cycle, which also lasts at least two years and is designed to lead students to a deeper understanding and specialisation in their field. It also prepares them to exercise their career. On successfully completing these studies you have a Bachelor’s Degree, or you become an architect or engineer. From there it is possible to go on to third cycle studies.

CREDITS IN SPAIN

The programmes of study in the university system are structured by credits. One credit at UJI generally corresponds to 10 hours of theoretical or practical classes, or their equivalent. Each subject is allocated a number of credits which are successfully completed through the relevant assessment methods. Diplomas or technical engineering degrees usually have 250 credits, Bachelor’s degrees have 300 and higher engineering degrees, 350. Generally speaking, students enrol in a total number of between 60 and 75 credits per academic year.

It must be remembered that these credits do not coincide with ECTS (European Credit System) credits. In a reform of the higher education system due to take place in the near future, the annual number of credits is expected to match ECTS credits, i.e. 60, in order to make it easier to transfer credits from one centre to another. Universitat Jaume I is already carrying out the first trials geared towards adopting this system.

Third cycle studies. In order to follow Doctoral studies you must have a Bachelor’s or Higher Engineering degree. The third cycle consists of a 32-credit programme of Doctoral studies that lasts at least two years and the completion of an original piece of research work or doctoral thesis. Passing a minimum of 20 credits, of which at least 15 must be subjects from the programme itself, gives you the right to the third cycle Teaching Certificate (certificat de docència). After successfully completing a research project and once the knowledge acquired by the person has been evaluated, she or he will obtain the Certificate of Advanced Studies. Finally, students will obtain the title of Doctor after successfully defending their doctoral thesis.

Postgraduate studies. These consist of Master’s degrees and postgraduate diplomas that are considered to be qualifications from the University itself. The purpose of these courses is generally to help students specialise in their career.

SUBJECTS

In each programme of studies there are three types of subjects:

Core subjects (troncals): these are subjects that must be studied and are part of all officially recognised programmes of study.

Compulsory subjects (obligatòries): these are freely established by each university, but are also compulsory for students enrolled in the corresponding courses at that university.

Optional subjects (optatives): these are subjects that students can choose from among those offered by the University and are aimed at furthering specialisation in the course.

GRADES

The Spanish grade system is numerical, 0 being the lowest and 10 the highest grade. Grades are distributed as follows:

9 - 10 Excellent (Excel·lent) 7 - 8.99 Good (Notable) 5 - 6.99 Pass (Aprovat)0 - 4.99 Fail (Suspès)

OFFICIAL LANGUAGES

Universitat Jaume I is located in Castelló, one of the provinces that go to make up the Valencian Community, a region with two official languages – Valencian (also known as Catalan) and Castilian (also called Spanish).

Universitat Jaume I uses Catalan as its ‘mother tongue’, and this is the language used on an institutional and administrative level. Both Catalan and Castilian are used in teaching and teaching staff and students are free to choose which language they want to express themselves in. The extent to which each language is used varies from course to course, but overall around 18% of classes are in Catalan. UJI offers Spanish and Catalan language classes for foreign students through the Self-Access Language Centre (CAL).

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

At Universitat Jaume I, the academic year begins towards the end of September and classes end in June of the following year. The year is divided into two semesters, the first of which begins at the end of September and finishes in January, while the second lasts from February to June. At the end of each semester there is a three or four week exam period. During the first three weeks of September there is resit period for those who must retake examinations. The diagram below shows the different parts of the academic year.

Office for International and Educational Cooperation (OCIE)

The OCIE is an internal and external cooperation service at the University whose purpose is to help improve the programmes of studies by incorporating qualifications that provide them with an added value. By so doing students will be better prepared to adapt themselves to the changing circumstances of today’s world.

The OCIE manages two clearly differentiated areas of work:

The International Cooperation area

The Career Development area

The International Cooperation area is responsible for running and disseminating both national and international educational programmes (Erasmus, Sicue, etc.), shared qualifications and internal mobility. It has an academic management office and an Interuniversity Academic Cooperation Advisory Council.

The aims of this Interuniversity Cooperation area are to consolidate and promote the University’s own curricular projects with foreign universities, to increase the number of exchanges between UJI students, members of the teaching staff and administration and services staff and other national or foreign universities. It also seeks to improve the quality of the exchange programmes as regards the management and control of results.

The OCIE runs a reception and orientation scheme for students who come to Universitat Jaume I through an exchange programme, and puts them in contact with their academic tutors. During their stay here, it holds also meetings with UJI students and informative sessions, as well as organising visits and outings to Castelló and other parts of the province.

E-mail:[email protected]://www.uji.es/serveis/otci/

The Career Development area is responsible for organising the work placements in firms, for promoting employment, for the career development schemes and for monitoring University Jaume I graduates through the Employment Observatory. It has a Career Development Advisory Council.http://www.uji.es/serveis/ocie/acil/

The Educational Support Unit is where all students enrolled at Universitat Jaume I who suffer some kind of disability can seek any information and advice they might need. This service offers a complete programme of support for these students that ranges from aid on the social level (help in moving around the University) to the academic level (aiding teaching staff with regard to work methodology, help with exams, etc.).

All the facilities at the University are adapted to meet the needs of disabled people and the local public transport company offers a special minibus service to and from the University.

Spanish courses for foreign students

Every semester the Language and Terminology Service organises specific courses for overseas students. These are run at three levels – beginners, intermediate and advanced.

The courses in Spanish for foreign students combine classes which you need to attend with exercises and activities to be done in the Self-access Language Centre (CAL), such as Spanish conversation groups.

The beginners’ level course is run before the start of each semester. It is an intensive Spanish language course that lasts three weeks and is meant to prepare students for the longer, regular courses run throughout the semester at intermediate and advanced level and which include the possibility of classes about the Valencian language and culture.

Doing sportThe excellent sports facilities at Universitat Jaume I, including the recently built sports pavilion, mean that about 50 different activities are now on offer. These include athletics, basketball, aerobics, rugby, tennis, sailing, scuba-diving, karate, swimming, skiing, training courses, etc. A small annual fee is charged for each of the different activities.

The Sports Service is responsible for running the sports activities at the University. The purpose of the Sports Service is to contribute to a complete education of students and staff, and offer them the chance to take part in sports activities as a complement to their purely academic work. The basic structure of the activities offered by the Sports Service is built around four main axes: competition, training, keeping fit and improving health, and promotion and dissemination of physical activity and sports.

The Service also regularly offers runs specialised courses to enable you to become an indoor football referee, swimming instructor, etc.

Health CentreUniversitat Jaume I has a health centre available to the University community on the Riu Sec campus. The purpose of this centre is to provide an answer to the basic health care needs that may come about at our University.

This centre, which has a doctor and a registered nurse on standby, can be used by both UJI students and staff.

Nevertheless, in order to receive full health care in Spain, before leaving your country you will have to ask for Form E-128 if you are a European Union citizen. If you are from outside the EU you will have to take out your own private medical insurance.

As soon as I arrived in Castellon, I went straight to PIAC and AEGEE, who were both very helpful and friendly. Between them I was given a list of addresses for available flats, as well as families who were looking for lodgers.

University Tunas (student minstrel group): the Faculty of Law, the Teacher Training College and the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences each have their own Tuna.

The courses that are offered in Spanish are really good. The teachers speak slowly. You only need a short time to get used to their speed. The teachers are always available to talk if you have a problem. The students are also very open and willing to help you, when they realize that you are Erasmus.Anja (Germany)

THE INTERCULTURAL

EXPERIENCE

This section aims to help students communicate across cultures. Finding yourself in a foreign country is the best way to learn about its culture. You will become acquainted with new foods, different timetables, specific customs, odd habits, surprising greetings, all of which are a big part of your stay abroad. Your attitude towards learning all about our culture will decidedly affect the success of your stay. The most successful intercultural visitors will be aware of the following attitudes:

Willingness to communicate: use your verbal and nonverbal skills of listening, observing and responding. Be receptive to as much around you as possible.

Non-judgmental attitude: try not to make quick, prejudicial evaluations of people and situations. In other words, do not jump to conclusions; ask why when you do not understand somebody's behaviour.

Flexibility, adaptability: this is the ability to make basic changes to your own self, experience new ways of doing things, and adapt to new circumstances. We hope you will return home a changed person.

Warmth in human relationships: be friendly towards people you meet. Try to encourage situations in which they feel comfortable and easy.

Motivation: The more reasons you have coming here, and the better prepared, enthusiastic and positive you are about your stay, the more you will get out of it.

Self-reliance: if you have a positive idea of yourself and are self-confident, you will adapt more easily.

Ability to make mistakes: if you are tolerant of your own mistakes and try to learn from them, rather than bemoan your imperfections, you will have a better chance of adapting more rapidly and effectively to new situations. Do not get stressed over little things.

Tolerance for ambiguity: expect to come across unforeseen unpredictable, imprecise, surprising or frustrating situations. You’ve left the security of your home behind you. Over here there is a foreign land for you to discover.

Low goal/task orientation: look at this experience as part of a learning process. Do not despair if you do not achieve all your goals. Enjoy the experience, meet people, grasp every opportunity for social encounters.

Results will come along eventually.

It does not matter if you do not possess all these attitudes now. They can be trained, and you will have plenty of opportunities for that over here. Being aware of them and willing to practice them will help you enjoy your experience to the full.
