Unit 4 : The Great Train Journey

Theme: Adventure and imagination

Answer Key:

k. When Sajid thinks about his parents’ reaction to his disappearance, he feels a few different emotions. At first, he images that he will become famous for being the boy who disappeared; this shows that he finds

the idea exciting. Later on, he feels sorry for them because he realizes that they will miss him.

l. Pupils will give their own reasons why they think the man was on the train. Perhaps he had been

sleeping in the carriage because it was comfortable, safe, or cosy, or perhaps he was trying to get a free

ride somewhere.

m. Sajid does not react immediately to the conversation about going to China. Perhaps he is thinking

about the skills he does not have. After a while, he thinks that he is not really sure if he really wants to go

to strange, new, faraway places.

n. why the man doesn’t tell Sajid that the train takes a circular route. Perhaps he can see how excited Sajid is about going on a journey and, because he knows Sajid will be safe, he allows him to enjoy his adventure.

. 2. Look at these words.

starve consume devour snack nibble gobble feast munch chew a. Which is the odd one out? Why?

Starve is the odd word out. The other words are ways of eating, whereas starve means to suffer or die

Present Indefinite Tense:

Present Indefinite Tense is used to describe action that is either happening right now or that happens regularly or

routinely.

Present Tense is one of the forms of verb tenses. It simply describes the actions, truths(facts), future and situations.

It is very easy to form and uses base form of the verb.

:Formula of the simple present tense affirmative is,

Subject + Base Form(V1)+’s’ or ‘es’ + object

If the subject is he, she or it, there is addition of ‘s’ or ‘es’ with base form. For example, He eats apples

daily.

If the subject is you, we, they or any plural form, only base form is used. For example, They eat apples daily.

Examples

Affirmative Sentences

My friend helps me.

Teacher talks to his students regularly.

I walk daily early in the morning.

They discuss literature with each other.

She takes exercise regularly.

Simple Present Tense Negative

Subject + do not / does not + base form + object.

Examples

Negative Sentences

I do not like mathematics.

He does not fall in the category of eligible candidates for a job.

The garden does not look attractive.

He does not attend his class regularly.

They do not talk to each other.

With the singular subject we use ‘does not’ while with the plural, we use ‘do not’. For example,

He does not eat apples daily.

They do not eat apples daily.

Simple Present Tense Interrogative

Do / Does + subject + base form + rest of the sentence +?

Interrogative sentences start with ‘do’ or ‘does’. For example,

Does he eat apples daily?

Do they eat apples daily?

Interrogative Sentences

Do you like Mathematics?

Does he belong to Rome?

Do they perform their duties honestly?

Does he attend his class regularly?

Does she take exercise daily?
