Academic Contract

James Irwin Charter Middle School is an academically focused school, based on the belief that all students will

benefit from an academically rigorous program. James Irwin students must fulfill important academic requirements

and take responsibility for their own learning.

1. James Irwin students are required to be full-time students enrolled in six courses each semester.

Students are expected to complete all homework assignments and turn them in on time. They must set

aside and expect to spend at least one to two hours every night doing homework and studying their

course work. Academics come before all jobs, socializing, sports, and other extra-curricular activities.

2. Students are expected to:

a. Arrive at class with all necessary materials: textbooks, notebooks, paper, pens/pencils, and

completed homework.

b. Be seated and ready to work when the bell rings.

c. Be active participants in the learning process by listening carefully, taking thorough notes,

contributing positively to class discussions, and being respectful of the ideas of others.

d. Be responsible for their own school work (plagiarism or copying another’s work is unacceptable).

e. Make productive use of any Study Hall time.

3. James Irwin Charter Middle School’s curriculum is designed to prepare students for a college preparatory

high school and related course work. Students understand that they will be expected to take the

necessary tests including, but not limited to, subject-specific exams, finals, and MAPs.

4. When absent, students are expected to find out what was covered in class during their absence and

complete missing assignments for each day of an absence. Work assigned before the absence must be

turned in the first day back to school.

5. Expected student performance and the nature and number of assignments are demanding at James Irwin.

Students must complete academic requirements and take responsibility for their own learning. A student

who has earned below 70% in any subject or below a 2.0 GPA at the end of a quarter will be placed on

Academic Probation. Teachers will inform parents and administration if a D or an F is earned. The

student is ultimately responsible for knowing the middle school academic requirements and for

fulfilling those requirements. At a minimum, the student will be expected to make serious effort to

improve his/her grade by seeking help from the appropriate teacher until the grade improves. Students

must have earned an average GPA of 70% in all core content subjects by the end of the year in order to

meet the prerequisite for the next level.

6. Extra credit assignments are not given. Teachers provide additional support as needed; students are

taught to begin with the end in mind as a practical, leadership habit; teachers communicate and update

grades at least weekly in Infinite Campus for both students and parents; and finally, grade slips are

provided to students weekly during active, quarterly periods (normally Weeks 3-8 of a quarter).

Signing this contract indicates that each parent and student understands and will comply with JICMS

requirements.

JICMS Behavioral Contract

Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and help them to become what they are capable of being. - Goethe

James Irwin Charter Middle School’s standards for behavior are designed to influence students for high school,

college, and for life, not simply to manage behavior while attending school. The standards in this contract will apply

to the entire community at the school. Staff members, parents, and students are to be positive examples while on

campus or at any school sponsored events.

Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Excellence, and Responsibility are the character pillars that are valued and expected.

These character pillars demonstrate respect for self, others, others’ ideas, and authority. This includes respectfully

confronting someone with whom we have a problem--with the goal of finding a solution. Maintaining these pillars

creates the atmosphere necessary to support academic excellence.

Student infractions will be dealt with as quickly as possible in order to minimize disruptions and uphold student

expectations. Teachers are responsible for keeping classroom order. The Administration will deal with instances of

serious, unacceptable behavior in accordance with the student handbook, district policy, and applicable school laws.

The following list is an example of unacceptable behaviors. The list is illustrative and not to be considered complete.

Disruptive conduct or failure to comply with a reasonable request

Causing classroom or school activity disruption

Leaving campus during the school day without permission

Possession of illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, or sexually explicit materials on campus or at school-related events

Inappropriate or immodest dress (strict compliance with dress uniform required)

Physical or verbal abuse

Cheating/Plagiarism

Weapons/Dangerous instruments

Truancy/Tardiness

Bullying of staff or students

Behavior Benchmarks and Consequences

1-5 write-ups - If a student receives an Infinite Campus write-up, a personal phone call will be made by the student, or the student’s teacher to the parents. (4 or more Level I offenses in a quarter will result in a Level II consequence, see page 17 for more details)

10 write-ups – If a student receives 10 Infinite Campus write-ups, a meeting will take place with the student, parent, faculty, and administration to discuss the behavioral issues.

15 write-ups – When a student receives 15 Infinite Campus write-ups, a second parent meeting will be conducted and the student will be placed on an Administrative Behavioral Contract.

20 write-ups – A student who receives 20 Infinite Campus write-ups will receive a mandatory 3-day out-of-school suspension (OSS).

25 write-ups – At the point a student receives 25 Infinite Campus write-ups, he or she will be declared a habitually disruptive student in accordance with Colorado School Law 22-33-106(II). A recommendation will be made by the JICMS administration that the student withdraw from James Irwin Charter Middle school or face expulsion.

Acknowledgement of Understanding of the Computer Acceptable Use Policy (located in the “to keep” MSD packet) I have read and agree to comply with the terms of this policy governing the use of JICS’s computer, network and internet. JICMS LOCKER CONTRACT Grades 7 & 8

You will be responsible for emptying and cleaning your locker at the end of the year. You will also have to pay for any damage to your assigned locker. There may be random locker checks throughout the year. Consequences will be given if any of the following are found in or on your locker:

Stickers or tape (magnets and magnetic stickers are allowed)

Inappropriate or offensive posters, pictures, or magnets

Marker or ink of any kind (dry erase marker does not wipe off lockers)

Any disgusting odor

Spilled food or drink

A lock that has been disabled by a pen cap, eraser, etc.

In addition:

You may not exchange or share lockers with another student.

If you choose to use a lock, it must be issued by the front office for a rental fee of $15.00.

Your lock may not be replaced by any other lock.

You are responsible to ensure the assigned lock is on your locker at the end of the school year. You will be charged an additional $15.00 for a missing lock.

Be aware that your combination is provided to you only and cannot be given out to another student by the front office or YOU!

With permission from the office, you may decorate lockers for special occasions (birthdays, holidays, sports events, etc.).

All items in your locker are considered YOUR responsibility. At JICMS, we strive for excellence combined with strong positive reinforcement. One of the ways we do

this is by displaying exemplary student work on bulletin boards and in the hallways. Students enjoy seeing

their work on display in this way.

JICMS also uses videos to help teachers observe themselves or other teachers for professional development

and for presentation at conferences to demonstrate our methods. In the past, interested news reporters have

taken pictures and video footage for newspapers or television. Using pictures and videos is very helpful for

our training of teachers and showing the community what we do at JICMS. All such images of depictions

of persons will be used for education, training, research and public information purposes only, and will be

used in a professional manner that protects the dignity of individuals and their families.

VOLUNTEER HELP

James Irwin Charter Middle School considers it a unique opportunity to be able to provide a rigorous academic program with character integration for each student. Often this is possible because of your willingness and availability to serve. We appreciate a faithful volunteer more than we could ever express. Your services are a tremendous asset to JICMS. May we encourage you as a parent/guardian or maybe even as a grandparent to commit a few hours a month/week? Without exception, there are many needs. Areas of volunteer help needed:

ATHLETIC EVENTS – Taking admission fees, concessions, stats, or keeping score at games.

LANDSCAPING/GROUNDS CLEAN UP – Weeding, edging, beautifying the grounds, etc.

LUNCHROOM MONITOR - Helping our assigned staff in supervising our lunch times. For the 6th

grade classes, this would be from 11:27-11:57 M-TH., and Fridays 10:32-11:02. For the 7th and 8th grades, this would be 1st lunch 12:07-12:32 M-TH., and 2nd lunch 12:55-1:20 M-TH. On Fridays, 1st lunch 11:07-11:30, and 2nd lunch 12:47-12:10. If you can only volunteer during one lunch time, this would also help.

CARLINE DUTY – Assisting either for morning or afternoon car line directing traffic or helping as a crossing guard. Times are 7:15-7:45 M-FRI., and/or 3:20–3:50 M-TH., Fridays from 1:30-1:50.

SPECIAL EVENTS – Spirit week events, concerts, promotion ceremony, carnival, etc.

OFFICE ASSISTANCE – Making copies, filing, stuffing envelopes, delivering items, etc.

UNIFORM CLOSET ORGANIZER – Entails keeping the closet neat and in order.

TUTORING – If you have an area in which you excel, would you be willing to tutor after school or during study hall time?

SAC – School Accountability Committee. Each year, we need 3-5 parents to partner with Teachers and Administrators in assessing school practices. (Quarterly Meeting)
